First carved in tortoiseshell, ox and deer bone, and bronzeware, Chinese characters were said to each contain their own world. Projected on the facade of the ArtScience Museum, viewers can participate by ‘swiping’ the Chinese characters onto the facade of the building using a web application. The result is a colourful, multi-sensory experience that continuously evolves as images are released from these Chinese characters, while influencing and changing each other within its own immersive, computer-generated world.

The 802 metre long structure spans the New Meuse with a 410 metre long, asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge, which has a 278 metre wide main opening and a 139 metre high, white, angled pylon. The bridge was designed in 1989 by the architects Van Berkel & Bos (UNStudio) and quickly became a symbol of the city.

As part of extensive renovation measures, SILL has given the bridge a new look. As before, the pylon and the supporting cables are illuminated so that the Erasmus Bridge is visible even from a great distance. The previous luminaires with conventional lighting technology were replaced with energy-efficient LED luminaires from the 14L series. The lane lights and the decorative lighting on the underside of the bridge structure were also replaced.

The city of Rotterdam officially put the new lighting system into operation. The infinite colour possibilities were demonstrated with an impressive light show. A total of 86 14L luminaires in 4500 K and RGBW were installed at the previously used light points for the illumination - all equipped with DALI control. With IP65 and active temperature management (operationally safe up to ta55°), the 14L brings the interplay of light and bridge architecture to life in the outdoor area.

The street lighting on the bridge was equipped with Series 155 luminaires and an additional "CityTouch" radio control system. CityTouch is a software platform for outdoor lighting. It includes web applications for managing the street lights and analysing the lighting data. This new technology turns ordinary city lighting into a real smart city.

With this new lighting, the city saves a whole 70% in energy costs for bridge lighting.

The winter is getting closer and I cannot believe it was a week since I uploaded anything here. It is probably because I have schoolwork to do... Working on the final exam of the course "Interactive web applications" - ASP.NET, C#, JavaScript, jQuery, SQL and CSS - it really is soo much fun! Miss you guys though.

This is an example of industrial practice contradicting the standard. HTTP/1.0 specification (RFC 1945) required the client to perform a temporary redirect (the original describing phrase was "Moved Temporarily"), but popular browsers implemented 302 with the functionality of a 303 See Other. Therefore, HTTP/1.1 added status codes 303 and 307 to distinguish between the two behaviours. However, some Web applications and frameworks use the 302 status code as if it were the 303

AI-Generation web application created this video clip based on a text description or still image that I had entered.

This isn't quite what I had tried to render. Also some of the hippo dancing outfits were shockingly similar to what I have seen on youtube whereby the police arrest someone at WalMart for shoplifting, wearing bad clothes, or something. That's not what I had in mind.

I debated whether I should post this once, since I prefer only posting images that have a meaning of some sort or other, not just images that are images for the sake of being images.

This shot grew on me, too. I made it as a new desktop background, because I was working with browser resolutions at the time and the last shot with the spaceships was all black, giving me little separation with the dark outer edges of the web application I was working on. But I think it says something about work, too, and has geometry interesting enough to post. So I'll post it as yesterday's image anyway.

Yesterday I received the prototype of my book for the Stuck In Plastic best of 2015 photo challenge. I have a mixed feeling about the result.

I used smartphoto.com as printing service and overall it's pretty good. I chose this service because the price are rather low but mostly shipping is free for orders of at least 20€. I don't have a lot of experience with printing photography but the quality of the photos seems good for the price. The only negative point from the printing quality is the cover: it is underexposed compared to the same photo printed inside the book. Another good point is that shipping was fast. It was supposed to arrive Monday but arrived yesterday instead.

However the big negative point is that their web application for designing books is very limited. First when you put a photo on a page there is no possibility to adjust the picture inside the frame when it a different ratio than the one used by the photo. So I had to experiment to recrop manually the picture on my computer before uploading them to avoid some photos to be cropped incorrectly in the book. Then the other problem with the application is adding text in the book. You can only add small captions below a picture. I wanted to be able to write more than one line of text, would only be for the introduction and the conclusion, but there is no option to do that. So I had to create jpeg files with the text inside.

The other thing that disappointed me with the book is that it looks smaller than what I expected. Next time I print a book I will definitely go for a bigger format, even if it means spending more money. Overall I am very glad that I have printed a prototype to be sure of the result. There are some problems with the text being to close to the book binding for some pages and it would have been disappointed if I had ordered 20 books instead of one...

Updated my work office setup. It was my two year anniversary so my boss got me a new computer . I used to have a 24" iMac with an external monitor and Dell Vostro 420 that I had connected to the iMac with Synergy. Now I run everything in virtual machines on the Mac Pro, it is much faster and more efficient than using separate machines.

What do I do? I develop web applications for use internally, manage my company's (not my, just work for them) ERP, and manage every piece of tech and software involved in all of our operations.

Dual 2.26 Quad Core Zeon Nehalem Mac Pro w/ 12GB RAM & 2.78TB Hard Drive Space

3 24" Dell G2410 Monitors (1920x1080 times 3)

Bose Companion 2 Speakers

Logitech Quickcam Pro

Not pictured: 15" Unibody Macbook Pro and Bose Quiet Comfort 3 headphones.

The monitors work very well for me, however I can tell the color is off and can't quite get it right so it wouldn't work for someone in print design or photography. For me though, they work great!!

Picknik, this is the "edit photo" button at the top of the photo bar. nice little web application.

BTW adobe photoshop is working on a very similar app.

The original image wasn't taken from within the realm of underwater twilight — as it may seem — but was shot the other way round ('paradoxically') from the perspective of a dragonfly zero altitude buzzing across over an out-of-the-way bayou of the small river Wuhle. This camera-angle-illusion is probably co-effected and increased by the enigmatic shades of deep and light blues.

descriptive words: v1.0: shallow water mirrors clear and blurry mesh of branches and twigs by the skylight above.

v2.0: mesh of branches — the mash up is produced by interfering sunlight reflected by two planes (ground of the sandbank & surface of the water) — from a dragonfly-perspective above the bayou.

▓▒░~ illusory ripples and lenses: The apparent ripples and magnifying lense-effects of the image are optical illusions caused by the sunbeams coming from the uneven grounds of the white sandbank interfering with those that were reflected and refracted at the not-rippling, smooth surface of the shallow water. ~░▒▓

music I hear favourably seeing this my image:

underwater twilight [_05:52_] which is track #06 of the studio album Underwater Sunlight recorded in April 1986 at Dream Studios (Berlin) by Tangerine Dream and released in August 1986; remastered 2003.

RESPONSES: Peter Tillers Says: April 25th, 2011 at 6:43 pm. By the way: that’s a great image. It’s meant to blur the difference between hard-wired electrical circuits and squishier neural circuits? In truth, however, the image looks like the wires coming out of my two desktop computers and various peripheral gadgets.

Laura Bergus Says: April 25th, 2011 at 7:22 pm....Glad you like the image. I also thought it looked like something partially organic and part machine, though the picture’s descriptive title is pretty good, too: “branches’ mesh mashed up by interfering sunlight.”

This mustard field was across the street from the barn shot I posted a few days ago. I think I might be getting close to running out of photos to post from that outing ;)

Sorry, I haven't been able to visit everyone's photos much lately. In addition to work and family, I've been busy re-writing the code for scoopd.com (a friends site) and developing a new Twitter based web application called TweetUI.

HGGT & HBWH!

Large on black or at 1600 x 600 pixel (fake pano) if you wish.

Brought my D700 to the cleaners, plus quite busy and a bit tired of Flickr - happens sometimes - but I'll be back and catching up! In the meantime...

About this shot

The shot above is almost two years old and actually only a 'vehicle' for some hints and tips I want to share with you for when you're preparing a (city) trip.

I took this shot with my (old and now sold) D90 + Nikon 18-200mm VRII travel lens, shooting from the back of the deck of a speedy moving river bus. It's fantastic travelling by boat in and around London! Glad I wasn't in the rowing boat though. :)

Preparing your city trip

In the 20th century (remember?) when you were sort of planning your trip, you went to a library or bookstore and got yourself a couple of books and/or travelguides from the place you we're going to visit. That's kinda old skool now.

Here's three simple tips to help you out planning your trip, picking spots with dusk/dawn in mind, and how to get inspired - all in 21st century stylee!

Tip number one: Let Flickr be your inspiration

Unless you're preparing a city trip to Atlantis (*blub, blub*), you'll find out that plenty of other excellent photographers have been visiting and shooting your destination. Take advantage of their efforts by browsing through their images, and learn from their spots and angles. You'll see the stuff that's been shot to death, so maybe you want to avoid these. Most likely though the work of others will inspire you to go out there shooting and give it your own 'personal touch/twist'.

I use Flickr search to get an idea about the possibilities of a certain location. It's a good idea to use more than one search keyword. So instead of using 'London' (for example), use 'London Thames barrier' or even better 'London Thames barrier night' to narrow down more specific results.

My personal tip is to use the filter 'Recent' on your search results. This way you'll find out the famous object you were planning to shoot is being renovated, surrounded by scaffolding - saving you the time and effort of going there all excited and end up sobbing.

An example: London Thames Barrier - Recent.

It's also a good idea to check out websites of a special spot you prepare to visit. For example: This way I found out the St. Paul (London) was being renovated and the excellent view over London you can get there is closed in March/April. I'd rather be dissapointed in advance than finding out about this after standing in a cue for 10 minutes or something.

Sometimes you're curious from what spot a photograph is taken, because you like that angle very much. Unfortunately not a lot of Flickr folks add maps to their images. Maybe to avoid that other people will 'copy' their angles? Tsk, tsk. We will find out anyhow! This brings us to my second tip...

Tip number two: Google Earth / Streetview

You'd like to explore the locations you're planning to visit beforehand? That's possible with (for example) the help of a couple of Google web applications.

Google Earth A useful download, especially with 3D elements.

Google Streetview Limited, but nonetheless useful.

While Google Streetview is very useful - it gives an excellent idea of 'being there' while you're still in front of your computer - it's rather limited because in the end it's only what it is: 'street view'. What does your photographic object look like from a boat in the middle of a river? What's a nice angle from that pedestrian bridge? How's the view from that hill? You can only find out with Google Earth. Pinpoint your location and you can check it out from any given angle. Together with the first tip (using Flickr search results) you'll get a pretty good idea if a location is promising and worthwhile enough for you. Plus you most likely will find out if there are any obstacles or unpleasant surprises making it difficult or impossible to take the shot you had in mind. No surprises for you if you prepared yourself using the tips above!

Tip number three: The Photographer's Ephemeris

Every photographer knows this, or should know it. Scott Kelby told me. ;-) There's only two periods in a day you can take shots that make a difference: at dusk and at dawn. No really!

Well, at home you can probably 'dream' where exactly the sun is coming up (east, right? hehe) and where it goes down (west - just a wild guess), which buildings it hits from that specific angle, where it sinks in the sea or where to find that nice view/spot at dusk/dawn. Now you're going to visit a different city you don't know *that* well. You know about the east and west thing and all that, but it won't be enough to be at the right spot at the right time at dusk or dawn! *Panic!*

Where's the sun going down while facing your object of photographic desire? Where's the moon? Do you want to plan a city trip with full moon? You want to prepare an evening or night session but want to know if it's in your view from *that* specific spot? Now what!?

Here comes the rather excellent Photographer's Ephemeris in handy! This little program is free for PC and Mac, and you will find it here. You pay for the iPhone/iPad/Android versions, but they're well worth it, especially the iPad edition.

You simply pick your spot (wherever!) and the date (of your future visit for example) and you'll get all the info on the whereabouts of the sun (dusk, dawn and everything in between) percentage and position of the moon, everything you'd like to know beforehand about the perfect light conditions.

Excellent stuff! That's the third and final tip, an awesome tool to plan your perfect city trip.

I also recommend Star Walk for iPhone by the way, an excellent app! Tells you everything about sunrise/sunset, the moon and all that. It's not free, but worth the money!

Summing it up and some extra tips

Free inspiration through Flickr, no more time wasting on location finding your way towards your favourite spots, and no surprises finding out the sun is out of range when you thought of catching a brilliant sunset over that stunning city view.

That being said, it's also a pretty smart idea to keep an eye on the weather conditions at all times - huge chance the unpredictable weather's going to be the biggest spoiler of your perfectly planned trip - especially going to the UK - but hey, that's life!

Even when the weather is not really cooperative you should always try to get the most out of your visit, so go out and try some rain shots or even better - when there's plenty of dark clouds floating by - bring your tripod and ND filters to create stunning Long Exposures!

Inspiration with the ND110!

I wish all of you out there a lot of fun with these hints and tips - if you already didn't use them - and happy shooting! Keep looking for that perfect angle, treat it with your personal touch!

My English is not perfect but I hope you can 'catch my drift'! :-)

Photo showing the Project "The Transparency Of Randomness by Vera Tolazzi (AT) and Mathias Gartner (AT) at the CyberArts Exhibition.

In this interactive installation, visitors can directly experience the significance of the complex interplay of randomness and stochastics in current mathematical and physical research. 27 transparent boxes, floating in space, continuously generate random numbers by using the wellknown medium of dice. The process of random number generation is influenced by the complexity of nature and its structures, using a variety of natural materials such as cinnamon, moss, cotton, and cork that have special haptic properties like being soft, rough, hard-edged, or fluffy. Each roll of the dice thus takes on completely different characteristics. Visitors have the opportunity to control one of the boxes by accessing a web application and therefore become an active part of the installation with their self-generated random number. The ensemble of all generated random numbers forms the basis for a real-time calculation and generative graphics. With this project the artists want to demonstrate the importance of random numbers in various fields of research, such as artificial intelligence, physics, computer simulations, and machine learning.

"The Transparency Of Randomness" received a Honorary Mention at the Prix Ars Electronica 2021.

iPhone 5

In some ways, I'm trying to prove a point with this image. I used my iPhone 5 to capture this old Plymouth rusting away in a wreckers. For web applications such as Flickr or Facebook, the megapixels issue can be a moot point. I certainly wouldn't use the iPhone to capture images for high resolution print applications. However, understanding and appreciating the iPhone's imitations and working within it, it's more than capable for displaying decent quality images for web purposes.

This is an update to this image www.flickr.com/photos/penningtonj/3891419513/ (a few small changes, but more importantly taken with a good camera vs my 3GS).

Updated my office setup at work. My boss got me all of this for my two year anniversary at the company.

Bose Companion 2 Speakers

Logitech Quickcam Pro

Logitech diNovo Keyboard for Mac

Logitech MX1100 Mouse

Not pictured: 15" Unibody Macbook Pro and Bose Quiet Comfort 3 headphones.

The monitors work very well for me, however I can tell the color is off and can't quite get it right so they wouldn't work for someone in print design or photography. For me though, they work great!! Picture of the monitor mounts located at www.flickr.com/photos/penningtonj/4002346812/ .

My team is about to release a new web application to our users and a lot of teams have come together and worked hard to make this happen. This poster was created earlier during the project to motivate the team members, not all signatures were captured but this represents a good portion of the team. Very busy weekend with the release activities and not much time for photo of the day, so figured I'd make this my photo of the day!

Hull Paragon SB controls a compact, but busy, geographical area covering the Hull Paragon station area by means of an NX Panel with indications being shown on a conventional box diagram.

Of the three junctions forming the triangular layout on the left of the box diagram, Hull Paragon SB controls only the Up & Down Main Lines and Up & Down Scarborough Branch convergence outside the box at the station throat.

The other 2 junctions - Anlaby Road Junction from the Selby direction, and West Parade North Junction from the Scarborough direction - are controlled by Hessle Road SB, to which Hull Paragon SB has 2 fringes worked under TCB Regulations.

Since I took this photo in January 2024 (in connection with a secondment I was on at the time), Platform 1 has been brought back into use at Hull Paragon station. This means Hull Paragon SB is responsible for the 7 platforms in the station, numerous stabling sidings, and rail access to and from Northern's Hull Botanic Gardens Depot.

Train Operators using all of these facilities are Northern, TransPennine Express and Hull Trains. LNER also run a couple of services to and from Hull each day, but the stock does not stable here.

It will be noted that for a signalling location responsible for an important regional terminus, Hull Paragon SB is lacking in some of the equipment you might expect to see, such as Train Describer (TD) equipment. Indeed, trains are passed on between Hull Paragon and Hessle Road SBs by bell.

The lack of TD equipment causes workload issues for signalling staff as it means information on approaching trains can be hard to come by, hence the signalman's use of a public web application to gain an idea of what is approaching from the Brough direction. Having no TD equipment also means signalmen are reliant on diligent use and annotation of the printed station workings (next to the PC keyboard) for keeping track of which trains are in which platforms, especially during times of service disruption or when set swaps are needed. This is especially important as regards the routing of departing trains, both at Hull itself, but also further on at locations such as Ferriby, Gilberdyke, Selby and Bridlington etc.

My colleagues and I signalling trains at Leeds also rely heavily on annotation of the station workings when various service alterations are required, but have TD equipment to assist.

I got an email Wednesday morning, as I sat down at my desk in my home office with a bowl of yogurt and granola, that I needed to be in San Jose, CA on Thursday for the Google Developer Day 2007. Google was to make an announcement about Gears, we were participating in the keynote about this new offering, and I needed to be present for technical assistance. I booked the flight, and about twelve hours later was on the ground.

The conference is a free event, that outgrew the project 100 attendees and turned into 1,500 onsite and a total of 5,000 around the globe (many of the sessions were simultaneously web cast). My first impression resulted in the question: what did Google do to get such a religious following in such a short amount of time. The answer to that was evident, when the only non-solicited applause from an otherwise anticlimactic keynote came from Jeff Huber saying that Google makes free services for developers.

I attended a few sessions, mostly related to Gears which provides an offline component for web applications. The browser plug-in is built around SQLite, which is the same relational database Adobe is including in Apollo. The overwhelming number of follow-up questions almost always stemmed around how to deal with synchronization. I think this is interesting seeing as data synchronization is part of the Live Cycle Data Services.

I spent most of the time hanging out with Ryan Stewart who recently joined the team, and we'll be making the return trip to the airport in a few hours.

SAN JOSE, Calif., — April 30, 2010 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced the availability of the Adobe® Creative Suite® 5 product family, the highly-anticipated release of the industry-leading design and development software for virtually every creative workflow. With more than 250 new product features, the Creative Suite 5 product line brings exciting full-version upgrades of flagship creative tools and workflow enhancements to designers and developers — enabling the creation, delivery and optimization of content across media for greater impact and results.

The Adobe CS5 product family is powering the creation of content and applications for the upcoming releases of Flash® Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR® 2, which are optimized for high performance on mobile screens and designed to take advantage of native device capabilities for a richer, more immersive user experience. Featuring integration with online content and digital marketing measurement and optimization capabilities for the first time, Creative Suite 5 products include access to signature Omniture® technologies, to capture, store and analyze information generated by websites and other sources. Adobe Creative Suite 5 products also integrate with Adobe CS Live*, a set of five innovative online services that accelerate key aspects of the creative workflow and enable designers to focus on creating their best work (CS Live services are complimentary for a limited time).

The Creative Suite 5 line-up includes five new versions: Creative Suite 5 Master Collection, Creative Suite 5 Design Premium, Creative Suite 5 Web Premium, Creative Suite 5 Production Premium, Creative Suite 5 Design Standard, as well as 15 point products and associated technologies. Creative Suite now includes a brand-new component, Adobe Flash® Catalyst™, a professional interaction design tool that allows designers to rapidly create expressive Web application interfaces and design interaction without writing code.

“We’ve seen from early customer reaction that Creative Suite 5 continues to inspire the design and developer world by combining time-saving workflow and productivity features with astonishing new capabilities, such as Content-Aware Fill in Photoshop CS5, that really push the creative envelope,” said John Loiacono, senior vice president of Creative Solutions at Adobe. “Whatever the media, CS5 is ensuring that publishers and creatives can deliver stand-out work and build great businesses around their unique digital assets and content.”

Also available as part of the Creative Suite 5 product family, sold separately or in one of the five Creative Suite editions, are new versions of the Adobe Creative Suite tools, including Photoshop® CS5, Illustrator® CS5, InDesign® CS5, Flash Catalyst CS5, Flash CS5 Professional, Dreamweaver® CS5, Adobe® Premiere® Pro CS5, After Effects® CS5 and more.

The Creative Suite 5 products offer more than 250 new features that embrace interactivity, enhance performance and maximize the impact of creative content and digital marketing campaigns. InDesign CS5 powers the transition to digital publishing with new interactive documents and enhanced electronic reader device support. Image creation and editing get a boost with Truer Edge technology in Photoshop CS5, which offers better edge detecting technology and masking results in less time. Photoshop CS5 also includes the ability to remove an image element and immediately replace the missing pixels with Content-Aware Fill. New stroke options allow Adobe Illustrator CS5 users to create strokes of variable widths and precisely adjust the width at any point along the stroke. New Text Layout Framework in Flash Professional CS5 provides professional-level typography capabilities with functions like kerning, ligatures, tracking, leading, threaded text block and multiple columns. In addition, Dreamweaver CS5 now supports popular content management systems Drupal, Joomla! and WordPress, allowing designers to get accurate views of dynamic Web content from within the product.

Performance improvements abound in the Creative Suite 5 product line with engineering breakthroughs, including native 64-bit support on both Mac and Windows® in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, that allows users to work more fluidly on high-resolution projects. The much anticipated NVIDIA® GPU-accelerated Adobe Mercury Playback Engine allows Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 users to open projects faster, refine effects-rich HD sequences in real time and play back complex projects without rendering. The revolutionary timesaving Roto Brush tool in After Effects helps users isolate moving foreground elements in a fraction of the normal time.

Accelerate Creative Workflows with Adobe CS Live

Adobe Creative Suite 5 products integrate with Adobe CS Live*, a set of five online services that accelerate key aspects of the creative workflow and enable designers to focus on creating their best work. CS Live online services are complimentary for a limited time and currently include: Adobe BrowserLab, Adobe CS Review, Acrobat.com, Adobe Story and SiteCatalyst® NetAverages™ from Omniture. Adobe CS Review enables online design reviews from directly in Creative Suite 5 applications, while Adobe BrowserLab is an indispensable tool for testing website content across different browsers and operating systems. NetAverages provides Web usage data that helps reduce the guesswork early in the creative process when designing for Web and mobile. Adobe Story is a collaborative scriptwriting tool that improves production and post-production workflows in CS5 Production Premium. Access to Acrobat.com services, such as Adobe ConnectNow Web conferencing, is also included to enhance discussion and information exchange with colleagues and clients around the globe.

Although you can't see it, I have an ergonomic keyboard tray mounted on the other side. I also use an ergonomic keyboard and a trackball. The black computer on the table is my workstation. The three linux boxes, under the table, is my development platform. I do web application development (ColdFusion), database architecture & administration (Oracle9i & MySQL), and server administration (Linux). They mimic a setup of some production servers I maintain, on which the application I build runs on. I have 4 spare Intel boxes (older hardware, no faster than PIII 450) and an old Ultra60 with one SPARC 450 MHz processor. The spare boxes are for research, educational, and medicinal purposes.

I was reading this article "Why Wordle" By Steven W. Anderson this morning and decided to try one out. I thought the "Think Different" monologue from the classic Apple commercial might be a nice choice. View large.

You can see my photo of the wall mural of the monologue at the Apple Campus here.

Apple's "Think Different" monologue.

"Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They invent. They imagine. They heal. They explore. They create. They inspire. They push the human race forward. Maybe they have to be crazy. How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art? Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written? Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels? We make tools for these kinds of people. While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who actually do."
