As this is somewhat of a unique occasion a couple of more shots of the Coals 60, 60095 on the Up Slow one line awaiting its as yet to be time-tabled path, out of the station and off top take the wagons back to the company who operates them. It wasn't actually too long before a timing appeared in the time-table but by this time I had left the station, my parking having expired after the last of the shots at the station, to follow next. Having run up from Toton on the 0Z60 yesterday, Colas 60095 sat in the station until early then morning when it took the cripple wagon over to Tinsley on the restricted speed move, 8Z60, returning without the wagon on the 6Z60 to arrive back at the station at 05:25. In the afternoon, a while after having left, a new move went into the time-table and this was the 14:30, 6Z61, Sheffield Midland US1 to Barrow Hill(Colas) wagon move. It ran about 30 minutes early, the Colas running round to the other end of the two wagons once more after which it set off towards Woodburn Junction, onto the Lincoln line eastwards as far as Woodhouse junction where it took the line south through Beighton Junction and so onto the 'Old Road', to Barrow Hill, arriving around 14:45...
The main reason for coming here at all was to grab some of shots of this set parked on the Midland's US1, Up Slow number 1, line, the wagons having been left there a few weeks ago due to a problem with a significant wheel flat on a wagon which was subsequently slowly transported, at 5m.p.h., to Tinsley Yard, very early this morning by the Colas 60. As I recall one of the south-bound cement empties was having trouble a few weeks ago with one of its wagons and it ended up being hauled, along with two of its neighbours, back to the station where they were parked up on US1 awaiting a solution to the problem; this sort of made the station look like it used to I expect, with freight wagons parked between the main running lines. Colas class 60, 60095 came up from the Toton T.M.D., yesterday, Thursday lunchtime on the 0Z60 move and hitched up to the north-end facing rake of 3 wagons, the 'cripple unit' with one of the rake of originals at either side and the driver got out and left the set on US1. Nothing happened until the early hours of today, Friday the 6th, when at 03:41, 11 minutes late, 8xxx, i.e. 8Z60, set off from US1 with the Colas 60 in charge and the lot headed off for Nunnery and Woodburn Junction, destination the last remaining sidings at Tinsley Yard. It appears that for safety, the move progressed at 5m.p.h.. the 8 in the headcode indicating a move restricted to a maximum of 35m.p.h., which is why it didn't go during the day at a time more convenient for the photographers! It took 65 minutes to travel the 7.5km from the station to the north-eastern side of the yard where the last remaining sidings are to be found in the area now chiefly occupied by the Amey Stone processing facility and the two huge aircraft-hangar like Marks & Spencer Distribution buildings. Having arrived at 04:35 and manoeuvred to drop off the central, 'cripple' wagon, the two remaining wagons were taken back to Sheffield, an hour later at 05:25 and arrived back on the US1 line in Sheffield at 05:43, 18 minutes later, a much shorter time now being taken to cover the 7.5km, the headcode, 6Z60, indicating the set could travel up to 60m.p.h. And so, after the early morning run up to Tinsley and back, this is how the scene looked when I arrived at lunchtime Friday with Colas 60095 and the two 'Ermewa Rental', JGA cement wagons sat on US1, with not much indication that anything was to happen; which was unfortunate, because a little later in the afternoon, it did! On the right, pulling away from platform 2, after its brief station stop is East Midlands Trains class 222, 222018, on the 1C42, Sheffield to St. Pancras High Level, express passenger service. In the background a Northern Rail class 158 DMU, 158850, with 'We are Fearless' on the side panels is awaiting its next service out of the station. Beyond that, as it is now 10 minutes to midday, the class 66 Freightliner, 66619, 'Derek W. Johnson MBE, has now been given the right-away, on the continuing 6E08, Hope(Earles Sidings) to West Burton Power Station, working.

* Views around the Station
Another one of those 'magic moments' and another wistful looking passenger glances along the platform, possibly looking to see if there is a driver approaching for the now late 12:14 Leeds service to be hauled by Northern Rail class 144, 144012, 'Evolution'; the doors are open but there's no sign of anybody. What's more, lurking in the background is another of Northern's old traction units and it looks as if it may be approaching on one of the corresponding through lines on this side of the station, between platforms 1 and 2, the Down Slow 1 line; the Up Slow Lines are between platforms 5 & 6, on the other side of the station, where the Colas 60 is sat with its two cement tanks, The guy in the distance is still staring hopefully in the direction of the P.S.. but he's out of luck as the approaching DMU looks to be going to take over. The passengers disgorged from the late arriving EMT 222, 222022, in the earlier picture, can be seen at the end of platform two on the left.
* Views around the Station
In the first of the 'Views around the Station', at top left, this one includes a close up if the two wagons which accompanied the 'cripple' now deposited, maybe forever, at Tinsley Yard on one of the sidings next to the M&S buildings. The grey, 'Ermewa' JGA cement wagons look almost new so maybe the one with the bad wheel flat, left at Tinsley Yard, will be fixed and transported back via road haulier or, like today a single light engine move from Toton. A telling picture at top right as a distinct split is seen between far left/right and centre; the two women at the extremities are doing what I often do, just staring into the distance hoping for imaginative insight, whilst the slightly younger set in the centre are all paying attention to their gizmos, phones and music. 'We are Fearless' proclaims the Northern Rail DMU behind them and this is another shot of the unit seen earlier on platform 5A, behind the Colas working, class 158, 158850. Just before this photograph was taken, another class 158 unit, 158784, was parked up in platform 3B in front of these passengers, 158784 is a named unit, 'Barbara Castle' and also has the 'We are Fearless' logo on the side, which in her case is quite correct; I suspect maybe only one of them, if that, would have known who Barbara Castle once was though. At lower right another 'celebrity' (Yuk) appears in the station and subsequently causes a bit of 'mayhem'. Having passed along platform 1 to the far south end, it stood with doors open and waited for what should have been a 12:14 departure, this was to be the 2N24, Sheffield to Leeds service with Northern Rail's 'white heat of technology' class 144, 144012, 'Evolution' in charge, but this didn't happen. Someone at the far end of the unit is looking wistfully in the direction of the old Sheffield P.S.B. building, from where the drivers usually emanate from, but nothing is happening. At lower right, another East Midlands Trains class 222, 222022, pulled into the south end of platform 2, 2B, a few minutes ago and disgorged its passengers, on the 1F17, St. Pancras High Level to Sheffield Midland service and was 13 minutes late arriving. A few minutes later, the EMT set went off along the platform, seen in this picture, heading for Woodburn Junction as an Empty Coaching Stock set, 5C47, running from Platform 2B and coming back in around 25 minutes, to Platform 6A, 4 minutes late. Here, at 13:10 it departed on the now 21 minute late, 1C47, Sheffield Midland to St. Pancras High Level service. I am not sure why the platform change is necessary, time-tabling I guess; the driver of course only having to walk from one end of the train to the other for the reversal process at Woodburn.
Excitement at the station and for a brief time as activity which started before Xmas when a wagon en-route to the Hope Valley was discovered to have a bad flat on one of its wheels so it, and 2 of its compatriots were hauled onto the Up Slow line 1 at the station. The remedial antics started around 24 hours earlier when a Colas 60 arrived at the station from Toton, making it feel a bit like the old days when freight services were about, wagons were parked or passing on the slow lines and there might have been a failed loco in the station being attended to and that's how it sort of was, last Friday lunchtime. On arriving a little too late for the Tinsley stone empties return to the Bardon Hill quarries, another freight working was sat at the end of platform 2, waiting its path north past Sheffield PSB's S0127 signal and east out of the station, onto the Lincoln line. This working, 6E08, should have passed straight through at 11:29 just as I arrived, but fortune favours the late... and it sat waiting its path for 20 minutes.. allowing these captures. This is 66619, 'Derek W. Johnson MBE', working the Hope(Earles Sidings) to West Burton Power Station empties, presumably to pick up fly-ash from the power station and transport it over to the cement works at Castleton. The 66 sat thrumming in the station as other traffic came and went and it didn't depart for another twenty minutes as later pictures will show. Exiting the station from platform one and heading to the north is a Northern Rail class 142 DMU, 144020 on the local stopper, 2B44, from here to Huddersfield. Not all that many folk about on this day of indifferent weather and that pretty much remained the case for the next hour or so...
* Views around the Station
And finally, the last of the 'Views around the Station', this time another mosaic of 4 pictures showing the events occuring whilst the Northern Rail DMU class 144, 144012, 'Evolution' continued its wait on platform 1, the time now almost 12:24 as shown by the station digital display to the right of the front of the unit also showing 'Delayed' and its destination. It was still there at 12:35 when I left, but passenger rescue was on its way! At top left, the Transpennine class 185, 185114 in the new 'Arriva' livery has now snaked its way around the stuck DMU, the TPE using the crossovers to and from the Down Slow Line 1, to access the northern end of platform 1 and so allow the passengers to board; good job these connections weren't removed in any of the 'rationalisation' programs! The TPE departs around 11 minutes late and I assume the passengers on the platform in the top right-hand picture have just got off the service, not looking into the distance and wondering why the train left without them, though they look to have just arrived back from an airport! In the lower left picture, passengers are still milling about and there appears to be no direct news about the delay of the DMU 'Evolution'; it still being parked up with the doors open and one or two Northern personell looking around .. all very odd. In the lower right-hand picture it looks as if rescue is finally at hand, though probably not the best in contemporary traction types as a Northern class 153 DMU, 153 328, having had the all clear after the passage of the Transpennine unit off the platform 1 line then onto and off the Down Slow, is now proceeding to undertake the same manoeuvre. Its destination display reads 'Leeds' and so I guess this is the rescue vehicle sent in to replace the still 'Delayed' DMU, 144012, it is passing on the right. All this was a bit interesting; cement wagons and a class 60 Colas parked up on the Up Fast line at the other side of the station, a stuck DMU of the 'Evolution' variety, ECS stock moves from the London services coming and going and two passenger services, one of which was the new Arriva liveried TPE, having to 'snake around' the stuck DMU to access passengers at the northern end of platform 1; as I said, must have been a bit like the old railway days... Finally, at 12:37, 23 minutes late, 153328 got underway on the 2N24 Sheffield to Leeds service, no idea what happened to 144012, it wasn't there when I checked later in the afternoon on Railcam; sort of suspect it may have been a driver problem... on platform one, a passenger still appears to be looking at 144012, ignoring the single car rescue unit, overtaking it on the Down Slow line 1, 'Evolution' must be making its presence felt with passengers.. though not today!
