Southern Elephant Seal Weaner (Mirounga leonina) Not too long after they're weaned, their black fur changes into a shiny silver-grey coat. This beautiful grey is the distinctive colour for weaners, and one they will keep until it turns to a honey-brown colour over the course of a few months. Taken on South Georgia, Sub-Antarctic.

Weaning is the greatest stress for calves.
One of research finding how to reduce stress - it is using simple nose flaps placed in calves. It is allows contact between the mother cow and calf but does not allow the calf to get to the mother’s milk.
In the 8 images below the weaning process appears to last 3 days before the juvenile gull finally gives up and flies off to fend for itself.
Juvenile Glaucous-winged gulls are brown or gray with black beaks, and take four years to reach adult plumage. They peck the adult's red subterminal spot at the end of its bill in order to stimulate regurgitative feeding. Juveniles fledge at six weeks.
Gulls feed along the coast, scavenging for dead or weak animals, fish, mussels and scraps. In urban areas they accept food from people and peck open unprotected garbage bags in search of edibles. PS This probably explains how this juvenile survived 19 days away from the roof top nest and its parents. (Summarized from Wikipedia)
Antarctic Fur Seal Pup (Arctocephalus gazella) Antarctic Fur Seals are weaned at about 4 months old.
I found this little black bear enjoying some berries early morning in Banff National Park. The bear was quite small and I found myself looking for mama, but the youngster was all alone. I'm guessing in his second year and recently weaned.

Lemurs belong to a group called prosimian primates, defined as all primates that are neither monkeys nor apes. Lemurs are considered the most endangered group of animals on the planet. These primates are only found in one small area of the Earth. Many species have small and decreasing numbers. There are a whopping 105 species of lemur, and they naturally come in a wide range of sizes.
Lemurs only live in one place in the world, Madagascar and the nearby Comoro Islands, which are off the coast of Mozambique in Africa. They occupy many different habitats: dry deciduous forests, spiny forests, rain forests, wetlands and mountains.
Lemurs are very social creatures and live in groups called troops. When lemurs are awake and active depends on their size. Most lemurs spend their awake time in trees. If they aren’t eating, lemurs like to groom each other or sunbathe.
Some lemurs are herbivores, which means they do not eat meat. They love fruit, but will also eat flowers, leaves, tree bark and sap. Other lemurs are omnivores and eat a variety of foods that include fruits, nectar, flowers and leaves with a side of insects, spiders and small vertebrates.
Baby lemurs are called pups. Many lemur species will cling to the mother’s belly for the first three to four weeks of life and then the pup will ride on her back until it is three or four months old. At three to six months the babies are weaned. Growing up can take one to three and a half years, depending on the species. This can be a short time when compared to how long lemurs live. Some lemurs can live up to 30 years. – Wikipedia
The calves have been weaned and shipped, and now the cows are going back to the mountains. There's still a lot of grass in the pasture and they will stay there until it's time to start feeding them hay.
...We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free...

Shortly after weaning, young elephant seals progressively go into shallow inshore waters where they discover a new environment and learn how to use it. With no urgent need to find food, they quickly become curious about everything around them, including a diver.. Possession Island (cold) waters, Crozet Archipelago.
This young bear was weaned this spring when Mama had new cubs and he has not left the area. I was sitting on the patio photographing hummingbirds when he popped his head up behind my garden. I took a quick shot and expected him to run off like before but even though he saw me, he stuck around and eventually came closer. There are two houses under construction down the street and the workmen at both have commented excitedly about the bear when I have walked by with Wylie. I'm afraid they may be feeding him and he is getting accustomed to it and to people. Not good. Two years ago three bears in our old neighborhood had to be captured and relocated to the backcountry because they were deemed nuisance bears, getting into garbage cans, unlocked cars and even houses. If a relocated bear makes its way back to its old haunts, it is recaptured and euthanized. This is why I have to put my bird feeders away during the summer (which I hate to do!) and only put them back out when the bears go into hibernation.
It is so lovely to see and feel the affection a cow has for it's calf .
Most of the calves bar maybe 3 are big enough to be weaned and most of them have weaned themselves but still sneak to the milk bar to get a slurp of mum's milk.
Some of the calves are so big that they are actually bringing the cows down and they are losing condition, simply because they are putting their all into feeding their calf.
We have separated a few of the calves from mum to try and build her up again and in the process it will wean the calves.
The first few days the calves bellowed for mum and one of the cows became quite depressed, while the other one was happy to be free lol. It's been 2 weeks now and we have had all the herd together again and even though the calves wanted mum, she was no longer interested in her calf.
The cows have picked up condition and looking healthy and stronger. The calves are also doing well.
Thoroughbred foals, once weaned, are separated from their mothers and placed in large enclosures, different pens for males and females.
There they begin their relationship life with the other foals, forming a real herd.
In this way they live their youth in a playful and "wild" way, before being tamed and launched into their sporting profession.
Now is the best time to observe and photograph them and there is one thing I immediately noticed, their desire for contact with other foals.
They painfully lost contact with their mothers and now they look for the attention and affection received from the mothers in the other elements of the herd. All this I learned in a few minutes by observing them, and in particular these two foals, absolutely spectacular in terms of expressiveness in their relationship.
Here and in the previous photo, the foal on the right fills his friend with attention, trying to arouse a similar attitude in him. The answer of the other is peremptory and already explains the hierarchy within this friendship.
Fantastic animals the horses !
Puledri giocosi

Squirrels mate once or twice a year and have their young between three to six weeks later, the young are born naked toothless and blind, normally it is the female who looks after the young and they are weaned between six to ten weeks. Unfortunately many squirrels die in the first year of their life, but they can have a lifespan of 5 to 10 years in the wild and in captivity they can have a lifespan of 10 to 20 years. The front teeth of the squirrel grow throughout its life and the cheeck teeth are set back behind a wide gap for chewing their food. Squirrels cannot digest cellulose therefore they must rely on foods rich in protein, during the colder months of the year this can be very difficult because some of the food they have buried have started to grow making the food not edible and they now have to rely on new tree buds etc.
Southern Elephant Seal (Mirounga leonina). After suckling her pup for about twenty-eight days, the mother elephant seal shuts off the supply of rich milk. The mother weans her pup abruptly so that she can return to the sea and replenish her depleted nutritional supplies after having fasted since coming ashore to give birth.
In so doing, she will leave her pup, now re-named 'weaner', to fend for itself on the beach. By mid-March, all of the females have left their weaned pups to return to the sea in search of much-needed food. The beach is then composed almost solely of weaners with a few large males left to protect them from amorous younger males until they are mature enough to take care of themselves. Their natal beach will, in most instances, remain their home for the following month or so, as they largely live off the fat reserves built up from suckling.
Left to their own devices, they sleep quite a bit in groups known as weaner pods, lying next to and on top of each other. During the time they are awake, they move around the beach communicating with one another by making shrill calls.
Not too long after they're weaned, their black fur changes into a shiny silver-grey coat. This beautiful grey is the distinctive colour for weaners, and one they will keep until it turns to a honey-brown colour over the course of a few months.
I waited and talked to this little baby elephant seal trying to coax him to turn around and look me straight in the eye, but no luck. St. Andrews Bay, South Georgia
Well, here is my gorgeous 7 month old baby boy. I don't post many shots [face] of my children now but they are an important part of my life so every so often I will. Anyway, 4 weeks into weaning and he seriously eats more than Violet. I can't believe how much this boy can put away. It's made the whole process very enjoyable but blimey do I have to be organised with menus.
CZ post a lunch of sweetcorn and carrot followed by banana and nectarine. On a positive note though, he's sleeping through and cruising for the 91st centile...not bad for someone born at the 7th with suspected intrauterine growth restrictions.
He/she was literally blocking the trail! And dead to the world, dozing in the sun. I was regretting not wearing different shoes, as my ancient trainers were promptly soaked thru, from last night's rain.
I had seen this his little guy ('little' by E-seal standards -- he already outweighs me!) on this beach a few days ago, with a HUGE scab of tar stuck to his head. I reported him, and I guess Friends of the E-Seals responded -- they had moved the CAUTION signs, and he had a fresh tag on his rear flipper. He's lying on the side that had the tar -- but he did wake up as I was trying to squeeze past him on the way out, and I think the tar was gone.
Sorry have been weaning myself a bit from flickr..(plans for returning to a job before too long)....and will work a routine which will give my friends a bit more attention..but still in the working process. So please forgive me if I do not or have not gotten to you.
Still loving you guys....very much!!!...& always shall....xoxoxo
The two Black Clydesdale foals.
Filly on the left and colt on the right.
The colt has now been weaned for about ten days. He is coping perfectly well without his dam’s milk or attention. He is very curious and boisterous, but very gentle and loves the ministrations of humans. His human parents are currently building a new stable for him...He will become a full stallion and won’t be able to play with this wee filly, or her dam, for very long...
The wee girl refused to be weaned - She just burst through the makeshift fence to get back to her dam. She is about five/six weeks younger than the colt, so maybe in about another month’s time. She is very cuddly and loves to interact with humans, too. She knows her own mind, though, and is very focused. She takes no nonsense from her older cousin!
At the moment, these two share a huge field with the filly’s dam, while the other two, the colt’s dam and her long-time friend, the big male, are free to roam around in another huge field.
Here, their humans were continuing training the filly’s dam - she was part of a semi-wild herd in Saskatchewan, Canada, before being brought to Scotland, so she has never been ridden. The two wee ones are very interested and, I think, quite envious...Horse whispering is the term for this and no harsh treatment (!) is EVER employed. These beautiful horses are pets! But they do need to be kept interested/engaged/challenged as they are so smart, and love to be entertained in the school...a great big outdoor, sand-floored paddock for training/playing.
The foals are still very young. He is about eight months old and she is about six and half months. They are just amazing to watch, and to play with them is wonderful.

His favorite color was pink. Despite having been born on Halloween, swaddled in orange and weaned on pumpkin, he had a thing for pink. All shades of it-- baby pink, bubble gum pink, cherry blossom, cosmos, quince, cone flower, magenta, mauve, watermelon, sunset skies in winter-- he loved them all. These shades showed up everywhere, in his school notebooks, in patches on his jean jacket, in his polo shirts, in bandanas on his wrist, in his Converse tennis shoes, and even in his hair. ¶ On the day that he crossed over, the velvet curtains parted and fluttered in the breeze. Salty tears spilled on the hardwood floor. I planted rose geraniums and Sarah Berhnardt peonies. After the memorial service, I watered his grave with hibiscus tea and rose water. I wrapped my grief in a pink silk scarf and buried it along with his boyhood treasures, nestled in the roots of the Yoshino cherry tree. ¶. A couple of months later, in the sweetness of an early summer evening, I was sitting on the porch as night fell. Lightening bugs were abundant that year, the gardn aglow with hundreds of them. Out of nowhere, a pink flash caught my eye. It came closer and closer. A pink-bottomed lightening bug landed on my hand, wrapping me in fluorescent light. She then disappeared into the night. ¶. Stargazer lilies sang me a lullaby, and I drifted off on a pillow of rose petals, sinking into a deep, dreamless sleep. The sky was on fire when I awoke, cotton candy clouds hovering above the trees. ¶. Pink is the color of innocence. Pink is the color of rebirth. Pink is the color of hope. ¶.
Vienna (Listeni/viˈɛnə/;[8][9] German: Wien, pronounced [viːn] ( listen)) is the capital and largest city of Austria and one of the nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primary city, with a population of about 1.8 million[1] (2.6 million within the metropolitan area,[4] nearly one third of Austria's population), and its cultural, economic, and political centre. It is the 7th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it was the largest German-speaking city in the world, and before the splitting of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I, the city had 2 million inhabitants.[10] Today, it has the second largest number of German speakers after Berlin.[11][12] Vienna is host to many major international organizations, including the United Nations and OPEC. The city is located in the eastern part of Austria and is close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. These regions work together in a European Centrope border region. Along with nearby Bratislava, Vienna forms a metropolitan region with 3 million inhabitants. In 2001, the city centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
