With Danilo Perez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade. From Koerner Hall April 2017; six years ago, and it was, now with heavy certainty, the last time.
Almost 90 year old Wayne Shorter left a legacy; a large 'Footprint'. He was an iconic jazz saxophonist with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, the Miles Davis Quintet, and Weather Report. Wayne Shorter died on March 2, 2023.

Wayne Shorter, one of the coolest jazz-fusion sax players you will ever hear just died at age 89.
An innovator, composer and bandleader, Shorter played with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in the late 1950s and by the mid-60s had joined Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet. Perhaps Shorter's greatest achievement was co-founding the fabulous jazz-fusion band, Weather Report in 1971.
Shorter was a much sought after soprano saxophonist playing on 10 albums by fellow jazz enthusiast, Joni Mitchell. Shorter also appeared on the Steely Dan LP Aja.
The album pictured, Heavy Weather, released in 1977, contained their best known hit Birdland. It was the first Weather Report album I bought and I played it endlessly. I recommend it as a great introduction to the band. Thanks Wayne for the endless hours of great musical enjoyment from your exquisite playing.

Every few weeks or so I like to nip into my favorite record shop and buy myself a "Pocket money treat"....This week I have chosen Steely Dans 1977 album Aja [pronounced like asia] It was the bands 6th album and it see's them lean towards a more jazzier sound. It became the bands first platinum album peaking at No 5 in the UK album charts, it also won a grammy award for the best engineered album in 1978 and on top of that it was ranked at no 145 in Rolling stones"500 greatest albums of all time"...Highlights for me are the magnificent Deacon blues and the "funky" classic Peg which many will remember for being heavily sampled on De la souls Eye know...

The name 'New Directions' is taken from Miles Davis' album of the similar title - it contained number of his never published pieces of music. 'Big Fun' is a great, great piece of a continuous flow of sound. It starts 'in the middle' and seem to have no finish... The original art cover by Corky McCoy... I attach a sampler of Miles' '70s psychedelia - couldn't find anything from Big Fun album: the flow The musicians playing with Davis were the cream of Fusion Jazz. John McLaughlin was the guitarist and a had musical piece by Davis on the album dedicated to him 'Go Ahead John'.
In a silent way / Joseph Zawinul & Wayne Shorter

I knew right away that this was going to be a motherfucker of a group.

One of my last LPs I bought in 1986, and this one in Stockholm, Sweden. Haven't found it in Finland.
Weather Report live performances from all around the world. Most of the songs are were from their previous LPs. The band was the best they ever had. Pastorius is still in the bass. He's got a wonderful solo: Slang! - A bit nostalgic to listen all these wonderful performances.

So many classics on this album: Punk Jazz, Mr. Gone, River People, Young and fine...
... but this is the famous "one-star" rated record by Down Beat at the time!
The album opens with Zawinul's composition: The Pursuit which has cool synth. sounds, medium tempo groove, African style singing - great mood! Shorter's Elders - the mood is a bit sad and dreamy...
Shorter's Pinocchio is already in Miles Davis record Nefertiti in 1967 - this is interesting to hear a new version of the old song.

Their 3rd album, more funk/groove oriented.
Couple of beautiful soundscapes: Adios with Zawinul's roller-toy...
- Sounds still fresh after 34 years..
The Will by Vitous is also interesting.
Genre: Jazz Fusion

C-cassette MC 1974 40-69063, (LP: Columbia PC 32900)
Illuminations a collaboration with Alice Coltrane. The album delved into avant-garde esoteric free jazz, Eastern Indian and classical influences with other ex-Miles Davis sidemen Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland.
Strongly indian influenced music. Sri Cinmoy chants OM in the beginning.
Mystical eastern sounds with Santana's guitar solos.
Alice Coltrane plays harp & a fantastic organ solo in Angel of Sunlight.. Nearly synth -like effect before synths. Great unknown soprano sax, (Shorter?) - Unknown flute
It must have been sometimes in late 70's when I found this C-cassette In a sale-basket of some record store. The quality of the cassette is quite bad, but the music much better. This is illumination - anyhow.
Deep meditative moods and furious breaks of the mystical band,
the guitar the most prominent, but the unknown soprano sax (probably Wayne Shorter?) plays very well. I saw Shorter & Santana together in Pori Jazz Festival a decade ago...
