My parents dressed up for a night out with some friends. I remember dad recalled that my mom looked wonderful that evening... and that he hated this photo of himself.

I think that he cleaned up just fine... even if the camera did catch him with his eyes closed.

Way Back Machine

My dad sits with his dog in the late autumn sunshine on the front porch in the mountains of rural Tennessee. He was sixteen years old in this photograph, and his older brother was fighting in the Pacific. The Blue Star flag in the window speaks volumes about America in 1944.... a time of hardship and concern.

Today's #WayBackWednesday goes out to all those employees missing their usual office setups. Here Julie Tilson, Associate Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy, rocks a treadmill desk.

According to what was written next to this photo in the album, this is my great-great-grandfather.

Another photo of some dude and a car.. taken by one of my mom's friends. She doesn't remember too much about it.

But really, when the photo is as classic and cool as this one, "some dude" is all that I need to know to post it here.

A various assortment of uncles, great-uncles, and a dad (hidden on the far left)... chatting it up outside of my grandma's house while leaning against her Ford Galaxie 500.

Mom took this one... but I feel certain that most of the women were inside having iced tea.

Way Back Machine

Two of my dad's friends having a conversation, and an important one from the looks of things, at a party at my parent's house. Skinny ties, cocktails, and social gatherings..

gotta love the 1960's.

Well there are still a couple of hours left of Wayback Wednesday, so here I am way back when ...

Dad adding a basement onto the house where he and my mom lived. It was basically a tiny shack when they bought it. He rebuilt it and added onto it a little at a time as he could.. also while working full time.

I look at this photo, and can not believe how he transformed the place into the wonderful home that I grew up in.

My mother recently discovered some paperwork and photos that belonged to my great uncle Melvin Lance from his days in the Pacific during World War II.

I can not begin to explain how proud I am to have them.

Found this scanned photo of some of my mother, four of my aunts, one uncle, and one cousin (I am guessing circa 1960).

Frank "Wilburn" Waters, a very dear friend of my parents, died last Sunday. It got me thinking about the enduring nature of friendships.

He went to high school with my mom, and became one of the closest friends my dad ever had. He and his wife traveled a lot with my folks over the years. Their son and I shared playpens together as infants.. and it was really nice to see him again this evening, despite the sad circumstances.

One of the things that moved me the most last year when my father died, was seeing Mr. Waters... very ill, and almost unable to walk himself... come through the door to say his goodbye to a lifelong friend. They had not seen each other much in the last years.. and the many adventures together had become memories rather than future plans.

But friendship endures. True friendship always does. And good and decent people are never forgotten.

John Mellencamp - Longest Days

It seems like once upon a time ago

I was where I was supposed to be

My vision was true and my heart was too

There was no end to what I could dream

I walked like a hero into the setting sun

And everyone called out my name

Death to me was just a mystery

Cause I was too busy raisin up Abel and Cain

But nothing lasts forever

Your best efforts don’t always pay

Sometimes you get sick

And you won’t get better

That’s when life is short

Even in its longest days"
