I was reading my eBook version of Horace Kephart's classic, "Camping and Woodcraft", on my iPod Touch when I came across a beautiful little nugget of camping wisdom explaining how to water-proof matches using shellac and thought I would give it a try myself. Photo created for use on Brian's Backpacking & Hiking Blog.

Note: Made this ATC back in December, so it does not qualify for the current Hero Arts challenge.
ATC base is 140# cold-pressed watercolor paper. Stamped Hero Arts K5059 Big Owl and sentiment from CL371 Essential Messages ("friends are special") onto the watercolor paper using black Ranger Archival Ink (waterproof). Colored using Prismacolor colored pencils.
Added Ranger Inkssentials Enamel Accents in black to make the owl's eyes shiny and to add dimension. Added puffy heart sticker. Tied linen thread around the card and adhered it to a dark brown cardstock base.
Thanks for looking! :-)

We left the refugio early, wrapped up tightly against the promise of cold weather. We'd rented waterproof trousers and crampons for our boots - which were still soaking and cold from the day before. Within half an hour, we'd taken everything off apart from our base layers - the sun was powerful, blasting down from above and reflecting off the snow below.
It was a steep climb, but it didn't look far. It wasn't until we'd got to the top of the valley that we realised what we'd thought was the summit wasn't. The actual summit loomed ahead, higher again that what we'd just climbed. It was still in shadow, promising to be cold and we could see great clouds of snow and ice being whipped around the summit by powerful winds. On the slope ahead, we could see the tiny shapes of climbers up ahead - impossibly far away - barely seeming to move. It was only after watching them for some time that we realised they weren't moving.
At the base of the final big climb, we met some climbers coming down. It was barely midday; we couldn't believe they'd summited and come back already. It turned out that they hadn't - they got halfway up, decided they wouldn't make it in time and turned around. We couldn't believe it. Maybe we didn't want to, but we ignored their advice of heading back down and pressed on, overtaking other climbers who had decided to give up that day.
Halfway up the slope, we ran out of path. There's no official route, but we were following the tracks of all the climbers who'd got a head start on us. The track in the snow got lost amongst a maze of rocks and hard ice jutting out of the ground - it was too windy for snow to settle, just large sheets of ice. We separated. I was struggling, Jevo was struggling - Patryk was up ahead, doggedly pushing himself over the rocks. Jevo and I agreed that if we weren't standing on the summit by 14:00, we were turning around and heading back. We had to get all the way back to the car and then drive 300 kilometres back to Còrdoba the same evening.
After struggling over the rocks for what felt like hours, slipping and tripping every few steps, I heard Patryk shouting from ahead. The summit was within sight - it was around a hundred metres further. From the top of the rock and ice, there was a path in the snow leading to a small shrine to Virgin Mary and the supposed burial place of Abu l-Hasan Ali, penultimate Sultan of Granada, after whom the mountain is named. The summit. We'd climbed to the highest point on the Iberian Peninsula. It was 13:58.
On the summit the winds were strong enough to knock us over, if we weren't careful. The sheer north face of the mountain was channeling all the wind up directly onto the summit, blowing snow and ice crystals with it. We walked slowly around the shrine; first looking south over the valleys we'd climbed, then north to the plains of Granada and the rest of Spain. East, over the dramatic Sierra Nevada and finally west, towards Còrdoba. We sat together for a photo, took a celebratory swig of brandy from the hip flash Jevo brought, looked around one last time, then headed back the way we came.
The rocks were easier on the way down, we half fell, half scrambled through them quickly. On the snow, we sat down, lifted our heels and slid most of the way down, leaving us only a short hike along the valley back to the refugio. What had taken us two and a half hours to climb up we descended in one.
Back at the refugio, we returned the crampons and put our still-wet jeans back on. Cold immediately set in. We decided to wait and warm up over tea, before heading back down the mountain to the car. The snow, even just outside the refugio, was as deep as our legs at points. Straying from the path even by a footstep and we'd sink up to our waist, sometimes needing pulling out back to the path. My knee was weak and sometimes buckled as I stepped on it. Jevo's tendons were swollen and every footstep caused him pain. Patryk said nothing.
We paused at a ridge, right on the border of the sunlight. When we left, we'd be in the cold shadows of the mountain. We had some food, drank water and a little tea to warm up and slipped into the dark trees below. As we walked through quickly darkening trees, I turned around to see the very last of the day's sunlight shining like a beacon off the summit of the mountain. It was like a spotlight, highlighting the peak hundreds of metres above us and reminding us of what we'd just done.
The final stretch was done in complete darkness. We had torches, but they made it worse; destroying our night vision. We arrived back at the car at around 21:30. We'd been hiking since 8:00 that morning; almost 13 hours on the mountain. We collapsed, cold, wet and totally exhausted, into the car in Capileira, saying nothing and just letting our bodies recover some warmth before we spoke.
We found a bar, drank some coffee and started the long drive back to Còrdoba.
I'm likely going to use this as a little box for a diy synth at some point in the future. I want to chop it so that it's shallower, but then I'd also have to weld the two halves back together.
