One can't easily describe a Dream Farm when asked to describe one. When I first saw this homestead it was early morning and the light was playing it's magic upon the golden green earth. Breathing deeply one could smell the fresh cut field and the green grass. It was one of those moments that transported you and your imagination to another time and place. I didn't want to leave or close my eyes for fear that it might disappear. I had the feeling this was my Shangri-La moment.

May you find your Shangri-La.

A re-make of an old photo I took many years ago. Taken outside of Davenport, Washington on highway 2 heading East.

Taken a few years back during a workshop I was leading in the Palouse with Kevin McNeal. I completely forgot about this image until processing it recently. At the time this image was captured the light is normally pretty bright at this location of Steptoe Butte.

On this morning we had very heavy fog to the point that the only real view was down near the bottom of the butte. This helped provide some spectacular light as it found it's way burning through the fog. As usual with this area it took a telephoto (280mm) to isolate this scene from the other elements that did not balance well. This helped keep it clean and simple.

I named this Ground Rainbow for the array of colors each layer offers from top to bottom.

This image shows the entry to Steptoe Butte State Park in southeastern Washington state. The sun had just come up above the horizon, and was making an orange glow on the tops of the Palouse Hills. This was the only sunrise I was able to shoot without rain in this location, but it was completely worth the trip.

The previous morning, after waking up early and driving up to the top of Steptoe Butte in the rain/fog/clouds only to be skunked by the weather, I was driving down and spotted a MOOSE! I didn't even know moose came down that far, but I was able to get some HD video of it. Considering that I didn't get any landscapes from that morning, I was utterly pleased to have the encouter with the moose. Some of the best things about photography have nothing to do with the end goal. It was just a cool experience.

This area in Washington has been farmed since the 1880's, but long before that, it was home to an Indian tribe called the "Palus". While I was up on Steptoe Butte, I could only wonder what it looked like before the patchwork of crops. Along with its rich soils, this area has a rich history. Below is an excerpt worth reading from the National Geographic website:

"The Palouse, culturally related to the Nez Perce, were renowned horse breeders and horse traders; the Appaloosa horse, with its distinctive spotted coat, its speed, and stamina, takes its name from the Palouse Indians. When Lewis and Clark encountered them in October 1805, they estimated the Palouse population at around 1,600. Like many of the regional bands, the Palouse helped Lewis and Clark along the Snake River."

While I was up there, I saw a moose, turkeys, deer, hawks, pheasants, and many other birds... plus some small furry things I'm not sure the name of. One animal I didn't spot up here was the Giant Palouse Earthworm, an elusive 3-foot long earthworm that smells like a flower (I'm not making this up, seriously).

The pumpkin patch, which is located near Athens, offers two targets for the corn shooter: a yellow jacket and a gator. Mandi choose the gator b/c she will be going to the Georgia/Florida game in a couple weeks. Hopefully Georgia is a bit more successful.

This is one of those places that really sets your heart on fire. It was stunningly beautiful to behold! It was early morning and the sun bought out all the glory of this farm when we happen to drive by. It was love at first sight. Photo taken Sept. 30, 2012.
