I was peacefully strolling around Pookoote lake near Vythiri in Wayanad when I was confronted with the stuff of an arachnophobe's worst nightmare. It was a colossal spider, some 8 inches in diameter -- that's not an exaggeration. And, it had a 'face' that made it look as though it just wanted to jump out at you from the huge web and scare the living daylights out of you. (Now that's an exaggeration.)
The Golden Silk Orb-Weavers (genus Nephila) are a genus of araneomorph spiders, and are also called Golden Orb-Weavers, Giant Wood Spiders, or Banana Spiders. This specimen is a Nephila pilipes jalorensis. Females are large and grow to 20 cm. It is one of the largest spiders in the world and it makes the largest and strongest web. The golden colour of its web is what gives the spider its name -- the yellow comes from xanthurenic acid and quinones present in the silk.
The Golden Orb-Web Spider feeds on any insect that gets caught in its web, including butterflies, grasshoppers and mantises. The web's silk is so strong that it can trap small birds, which the spider doesn’t eat. Since these birds can destroy the web by thrashing around, the spider leaves insect wings on its web to warn birds and avoid such damage.
Its venom is a neurotoxin similar to that of the Black Widow Spider; however, its venom is not as powerful. As long as you are not allergic, its bite causes local pain, redness, and blisters, and these symptoms usually disappear within a day or two.

“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”

This is my favorite shot from Vythiri Village Resort in Wayanad, Kerala where I had gone for office outing. It's a wonderful resort with the main attraction being this waterfall which is artificial. It is 'switched ON' in the evening. Behind me is a small suspension bridge over a stream and then the restaurant and the hotels along with some wonderful landscaping.

Fantastic place to relax and enjoy in the middle of nature.
Nothing much you can do other than just strolling in and around the estate property, sit back and read a book or listen to songs. Excellent food and service. I will visit again for sure.

Chembra peak is the highest peak in Wayanad at 2100m above MSL. When I trekked the region, it was early winter - which is why I saw it in beautiful weather. The view of the peak from the tea gardens below is breathtaking. My guide recommended that the peak should be scaled during the monsoons, when the slopes become treacherous and "leechy". Someday .....
