Santiago Island has the biggest and longest lava flow, which is located in Sullivan Bay. Geologically speaking, this island is one of the most beautiful and unbelievable formations. The vast basaltic landscape performs smooth and unbroken surfaces with undulations and nods formed by the fluid lava that created the sculpture. It is located on the central west of the archipelago and is formed by two overlapping volcanoes. It is the 4th biggest of the Galapagos archipelago.

A moment during our last day of round trip around Iceland, when we left Snaefellsnes National Park with its outlandish volcanic landscapes and endless hrauns (lava fields) to see a real village again.

Genovesa Island, its sandy coral beach with a great viewpoint of the bay, is one of the Galapagos’ jewels. It is also known as the “Bird Island“ offering the opportunity to enjoy the most representative birds of Galapagos as: Puffball–chicks, white both yellow–crowned and lava herons, Red footed boobies contrasting with the Nazca booby and also the Swallow–tailed gulls, the only nocturnal gulls in the world that will be nesting at the cliff’s edge.

Driving into the highly active volcanic area of Myvatn during a relapse into winter made our arrival all the more dramatic. I had to think of a Song of Ice and Fire immediately :)

Snaefellsjokul vocano at the tip of Snaefellsnes peninsula in West Iceland during a winter day of gorgeous lighting. that fluffy white mountain top hides a volcano underneath which has shaped the landscape around it. You may still appreciate the lava rocks dispersed in that plain.

Impressions of the alienesque volcanic landscape dominating vast parts of Sneafellsnes peninsula which had seen a number of volcanic eruptions several thousand years ago and still looks like it had happened last year. In the foreground to left and right of the road you can appreciate the volcanic lava that was expulsed and sent all over the peninsula, only now starting to be overgrown by what I suppose are lichens as pioneers of this landscape awaiting to be reclaimed.

incredible scenario we encountered on our way along Snaefellsnes peninsula in West Iceland. The sheep add some sense of scale as always :)

River Skjálfandafljót in Central-North Iceland on its amazing course towards Aldeyjarfoss after having passed Godafoss miles and miles before. The terrain becomes rougher and rougher and access to Aldeyjarfoss is pretty tricky as we had to learn. This river forms five amazing waterfalls: Godafoss, Hrafnabjargafoss, Aldeyjarfoss, Barnafoss and Ullarfoss.

Typical volcanic landscape in Iceland, where ashes mingle with snow, brown grass contrasts with black rock and white sugar-coated mountain peaks. The whole thing reminded me of the colours of a Tiramisu :)

Snow still around in March and highlighted by the moonlight. Thanks to all who have fav & commented on my image.

Serious fumaroles and mud geysers at Hverir near Namafjall and Myvatn. The whole place is a living and breathing Earth lab showcasing a volcanic, ever changing landscape. The whole place exhudes sulphuric gasses and smells lovely like 10.000 foul eggs being hidden away there ;) :p. No wonder Icelanders were mining sulphur here in past times.

Skaftafell with snow and ashes still from Eyjafjallajokull's eruption two years ago. To see them mixing was a strange sight.

Bartolomé Island is named after Sir Bartholomew James Sulivan, an English naval lieutenant who participated in Darwin's voyage on the Beagle. The island is located to the east of Santiago Island. The eastern part of the island consists of volcanic cones, while the western part is a peninsula with several rock formations, including Pinnacle Rock, a steep volcanic rock.

Another rare image of the one day I did not enjoy in Iceland when we got lost in bad weather and volcanic "wilderness".

Laufskálavarða is a lava ridge, surrounded by stone cairns, between the Hólmsá and Skálmá rivers, close to the road north of Álftaver. All travellers crossing the desert of Mýrdalssandur for the first time were supposed to pile stones up to make a cairn, which would bring them good fortune on the journey.

Black scars of devastating forest fires in 2007 can be seen everywhere along the S50/S51 hike with dark bark of the Canary Island pine IPinus canariensis) that still stains when touched. However, fire triggers growth of bluish-green glaucous epicormic shoots in the lower trunk, a characteristic feature of this pine as seen in this image. The islet of Eden located just off the northwestern coast of Santa Cruz is the remains of a volcanic "tuff cone" - a type of volcanic feature formed when molten lava comes into contact with cold sea water with explosive results. There is an abundance of wildlife here as you will see.

From my archives: I took this photo of our alpine guide who did a great job helping us avoid the deep crevasses as we hiked on the Vatnajokull Glacier in Iceland. What a great experience it was hiking the glacier at sunset! Can't wait to be able to go back.

Three famous, easily recognisable rocks of Gran Canaria, Roque Nublo (Clouded Rock), Roque la Rana (the Frog) and Roque del Fraile (the Friar), can be seen from various points separately, most commonly views of the Rock Nublo together with the Frog as the two monoliths are next to each other on the plateau. The image is taken from circular S50/S51 hike when I was able to see all three rocks clearly together. You do need a telephoto lens to frame it. This is one of many spectacular views along the hike S50/S51 from Llanos De La Pez to Pico de las Nieves, the second highest point on the island (1949 m). Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain

the incredible canyon and river bed of the Jokulsa a Fjollum with its canyon made entirely from columnar basalt as result of volcanic actions. This shot was taken right after Dettifoss waterfall, where the river resumes its rather calm flow.

Monochrome Interlude: some photos get a second life when processed in black and white!

Black and white photo of the sun setting behind the Shiprock volcanic rock formation near Shiprock, New Mexico. Shiprock is a monadnock (an isolated hill or erosion-resistant rock rising above a peneplain) rising nearly 1,583 feet above the desert plain of the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mexico. Its peak elevation is 7,177 feet above sea level.

This is an image from the only day during our two-weeks-roundtrip around Iceland which I did not enjoy. We wanted to visit Aldeyjarfoss, a waterfall which is very tough to access in winter and early Spring but offers the most astounding setting within columnar basalt rock. The only day we had for doing so promptly brought weather misery. We got there only half way with our campervan, had to park kilometres away from the place, rescued four very silly young girls who I guess had recently made their driving license and had tried to access the waterfall with their 4x4 ending in terrible failure and them being stuck in an ice hole. After all that excertion we went on our hike to get to the waterfall, got lost in bad weather, poor visibility and snow that reached up to our waste soimetimes. In the end we only got short glimpses of the river and its strange volcanic rocklands but never reached the waterfall and were rather happy just to having made it back to our van :) And so it goes ... :p

Gran Canaria endemic species of Wallflower (Erysimum albescens) makes adds a splash of bright colours against a spectacular rocky landscape covered with misty clouds. They are grown higher up in the mountains and distinct from more widely spread the Teide wallflower (Erysimum scoparium). Layers of volcanic gravel compressed by time. Caldera de Bandama is a volcanic crater of about 1 km with a path going all around the crater rim with spectacular views around. The highest point is the Pico de Bandama (569 m – 1867ft), a popular tourist viewpoint as you can drive up there in a car. The Pico and Caldera forms the Bandama Natural Monument that is the part of the Tafira Protected Landscape of Gran Canaria. In addition to its geological values, the caldera is a home of few plants and insects that can be only find in this place. Gran Canaria, Spain.
