Asia is a young vocalist with a bright future ahead of her.

Rachel is a regular on weekends at 'Home of the Blues' Grossman's Tavern. She would sing a song or two, as a guest to New Orleans style band. Usually a bluesy tune, not particularly happy, but heartfelt. Her favourite is "Judge Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair." When not singing, she would be socializing, laugh and dance like there is no care in the world. Rabi Rachel is also in charge to light the Chanukah candles when Christmas spirit becomes too sugary to deal with.

Mike Evin is frequent piano player and vocalist with the weekend bands.

I caught him with a trifling Jane,

I warned him 'bout before.

I had my knife and went insane.

The rest you ought to know....." ♫

My favorite female vocalist, Janis Joplin, used to sing, "Honey, get it while you can," so I thought about that when I noticed that the Milky Way would be above the horizon line for about an hour before moonrise would wash it out. I set my alarm for midnight and drove over to lovely Lake Tahoe, and thankfully nobody else was down at Bonsai Rock, and everything worked out.

Last night I had the pleasure of working with the soulful vocalist, Melanie Moore.

A few quick pics I took of Sandra during our sound check before our concert at The Mesa Jazz and Blues Theater in Mesa, Arizona.

"Cadillac" John Nolden was born April 12, 1927, in Renova, Mississippi. He is a blues harmonica player, songwriter and vocalist. Shown at the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

A Yellow-throated Vireo singing his little heart out. My first time to photograph one of these Llittle beauties. It has been a season of firsts!

Yellow-throated Vireos are early spring migrants that travel from their wintering grounds in Central and South America.

I think this Grey Wagtail was trying to tell me something.

Andrew Scott is a professor at Humber College and York University. At both institutions, he was also a student at one time. This was the first time, I had seen him play. Having a teaching job, he can choose when he plays. Andrew Scott trio included Jon Meyer -bass and Amanda Tosoff-piano. Taylor Maslin (a recent graduate from Humber College) joined them on the second set on sax. 'La Rev', a Mexican Restaurant, is popular with jazz lovers and the food is excellent there. Later in the set, an excellent vocalist, who was in the audience, also joined the band. Dionne Taylor was sitting next to me, but I almost did not recognize her, as she drastically changed her hairstyle.

Shawn is better known as leader of 'Sean Stanley Band', which can be solo piano/vocalist to a sextet. I know Shawn for few years, but only now is he getting some attention. He is one of the hardest working musicians in Toronto and from playing on the street corners, he plays at all the Toronto best jazz joints and hotel bars. That can only be attributed to his talent and hustle.

La linda Belinda is an excellent flautist and vocalist. I was lucky to seen Belinda twice at the Havana Jazz Festival, She performed at "Música es Mujer" in Teatro América, and few days later, she was featured performer in Bobby Carcasses (her musical padre) showcase of his best fifty, or there about, musical friends. Flute is not a common jazz instrument in my part of the world. I can count flautists (or flutist) with fingers on one hand. In Cuba, there is definitely more of them. Not sure who the singer with her is.

Aretha Franklin, 18 times GRAMMY winner, leaves no doubt with her performances why she was at the top of her profession. A legendary vocalist with career is spanning almost 60 years, died at 76 in 2018. She started her secular career at 18 and was touring until 2017. She did not look healthy at this concert from 2011. Overweight; just coming back from one of her frequent breaks, because of health issues, but her voice was still top notch. It did not matter what she was singing: Souls, R&B, Blues, rock, pop and of course gospel, she earned 'Respect'. This photo was taken during her 50 minutes encore after her regular concert. Opening night of Toronto Jazz Festival; Free tickets for first 15000 people; Of course; mayhem.

She was my favourite, fave of the black couple in the 'White House' and many citizens of the world regardless race or colour.

Genevieve (Gigi) Marentette is a singer with wide repertoire, but sticking mostly closer to jazz. She had a long career in Asia and Europe, but came back to Toronto to establish herself at home. She has a killer voice, looks and fashion is her domain. Gigi is one of the founders of Kensington Jazz Festival (Since 2016) and can be found doing million things preparing the festival and even more, when the festival is happening. I saw her this month at great event at Old Mill Inn, where she prepared a special program of song of one of her mentors Don Francks. On the photo she is the one with black & red dress, Dione Taylor (with the hat) joined her from the audience on improptu duet.

Surprisingly, I seen her at Jazz Festival in Cuba in January, where she was featured performer (and only Canadian) in Bobby Carcasses showcase of his best fifty, or there about, musical friends. She is a true performer, not famous yet, but well known in Toronto musical community.

Ranee Lee was opening the TU Jazz Festival. The T is for Toronto, the U is this case stands for Undergraduate. The festival focuses on fresh new faces in Toronto Jazz scene. Ranee Lee is way past the Undergraduate. Now over 80 years old, she was and STILL IS for decades an educator, as are/were most of her band mates. She is not slowing down, as she played 2 sets, sitting down only on the ballads. With fellow Montrealer Taurey Butler - piano, Mark Kelso - drums, Neil Swainson - bass, Ted Quinlan- guitar. Ranee Lee born in NYC, came to Montreal in 1970 and played saxophone and drums at one point of her career, but now is, for many years, known only as a jazz vocalist, professor and an actor (Billie Holiday in Lady Day).
