I find it necessary to take time to appreciate the ordinary once in awhile. Do not discount the beauty of the common Blue Jay or its type A personality. These birds set off an alarm when a snake would come too close to our koi pond. They are accomplished vocalists. Yesterday I watched one splash unabashedly in the bird bath, then sit on the edge and mimic the screech of a Red-Tailed Hawk. So much more than ordinary.
Rebecca is vocalist and trumpeter and performed in a back patio of 'Pamenar' which seats about 30 people (uncomfortably 😄) Michael is Rebecca's long time partner, so I purposely included him in the photo. Kensington Jazz Festival was back after forced hiatus, the attendance was about 60% of previous years, but the concerts were 100% wonderful.

Alex is an actor, singer, composer and photographer, who brings you new tunes wrapped in old time feeling. He sounds like Sinatra; his mannerism is also from the 1950s-60s. I have seen him treating his numerous fans, who range from twentysomething to seventysomething, with kindness and respect. The vocalist was nominated for 2022 Juno Award. (Canadian Grammy). His band the 'Jazz Mavericks' include Jacob Gorzhaltsan-sax, Ewen Farncombe-piano, Daniel Botos-drums and Ben Dwyer on bass. At 'Tapestry' on the day it opened under new ownership.

Sammy Jackson was new discovery for me, but probably for nobody else in the audience. The diminutive vocalist won 2021 Juno Award. (Canadian Grammy). She was singing (Mark Godfrey- bass, Ian Wright- drums, Tom Fleming- guitar) in a small club 'Tapestry', which just opened under new owners on Oct 1.

Searching for the source of loud melodies from treetops in Melbourne, I found this bird.
From far north Thunder Bay, but part of Toronto blues since forever. He is a multiple Maple Blues Award winner and JUNO, longstanding association with the Downchild Blues Band 1979-2025! Gary Kendall is a Canadian bassist, vocalist and band leader, best known for being big part of Hogtown All Stars, The Mighty Duck Blues Band, and The Swingin’ Blackjackand. Gary Kendall Trio. I have seen Kendall not only with local bands, but also with many musicians visiting Toronto from abroad, they probably asked for him. On this photo he was part of trio with Tyler Burgess -drums and a guitar player at Union Summer music series.

A Yellow-throated Vireo singing his little heart out. My first time to photograph one of these Llittle beauties. It has been a season of firsts!
Yellow-throated Vireos are early spring migrants that travel from their wintering grounds in Central and South America.
Teke::Teke was a bit surprise for me. One of the few late night bands (11 pm start), and surprisingly Canadian group with mostly Japanese faces and a strong, definite Japanese music (Eleki) influences. Hard to define for outsider like me, but they have a strong following. Vocalist Maya Kuroki is central, with Japanese theatre movements, or is it amine? Definitely worth it to see them. Not jazz, not blues, but one of the pleasant surprises of the festival. On the photo is also Yuki Isami and Etienne Lebel

I remember Janice from about 20 years ago Friday's nights at Palais Royale. She was a diminutive girl in her early 20's with surprisingly strong, smoky, sultry voice. I did not see her since the 100 year old 'Palais Royale' relatively minor fire (early 2000), and the building was closed for 6 years. Janice Hagan sings now mostly in the Reservoir Lounge and at corporate events. Her vocals are heartfelt, and lively. The talented vocalist was part of Rex Sunday afternoon "JazzInToronto" Songbird Series. She was part of an excellent quintet and the appreciation of her mates was clearly visible on the stage. With Roberto Occhipinti – Bass, Al Cross - Drums, Eric Boucher- piano and William Sperandai - trumpet.

Karina, the singer on this photo, is a gift from Putin to Toronto.😎 She left Ukraine at the beginning of the war. Smart people leave first. When we were first introduced, I thought her name is Corrina. In noisy clubs, I got many names wrong in the past. ♫Corrina, Corrina, where you been so long......♫? It's an old song, but 'Corrina' didn't know it. After few more times seeing her, I found out her actual name. Karina Muhir is fairly new to Toronto and the swing community, so this talented vocalist performed first time at Saturday swing dance. I've compared her voice to strong, rich coffee with cream and just a hint of sugar. Bobby Hsu, on the other hand, is a Toronto jazz scene veteran and was the band driving force. The rest of the band, Rob Chapman, Norbert Botos and Ethan Tilberry. are young lions of the jazz scene, I would hear mostly at Drom Taberna.

Amazing how these birds are so brilliantly colored on their face, throat, and breast, yet be so well camouflaged on the rest of their body.
I followed this individual around for about half an hour. It sure was vocal!

Aretha Franklin, 18 times GRAMMY winner, leaves no doubt with her performances why she was at the top of her profession. A legendary vocalist with career is spanning almost 60 years, died at 76 in 2018. She started her secular career at 18 and was touring until 2017. She did not look healthy at this concert from 2011. Overweight; just coming back from one of her frequent breaks, because of health issues, but her voice was still top notch. It did not matter what she was singing: Souls, R&B, Blues, rock, pop and of course gospel, she earned 'Respect'. This photo was taken during her 50 minutes encore after her regular concert. Opening night of Toronto Jazz Festival; Free tickets for first 15000 people; Of course; mayhem.
She was my favourite, fave of the black couple in the 'White House' and many citizens of the world regardless race or colour.

Genevieve (Gigi) Marentette is a singer with wide repertoire, but sticking mostly closer to jazz. She had a long career in Asia and Europe, but came back to Toronto to establish herself at home. She has a killer voice, looks and fashion is her domain. Gigi is one of the founders of Kensington Jazz Festival (Since 2016) and can be found doing million things preparing the festival and even more, when the festival is happening. I saw her this month at great event at Old Mill Inn, where she prepared a special program of song of one of her mentors Don Francks. On the photo she is the one with black & red dress, Dione Taylor (with the hat) joined her from the audience on improptu duet.
Surprisingly, I seen her at Jazz Festival in Cuba in January, where she was featured performer (and only Canadian) in Bobby Carcasses showcase of his best fifty, or there about, musical friends. She is a true performer, not famous yet, but well known in Toronto musical community.

Went out Saturday afternoon to listen to the Legendary Las Vegas alto saxophonist, Tom Hall and his quartet feat. Toscha Comeaux, at The Bootlegger Italian Bistro this. They sounded wonderful!
Canada sometimes benefit from unrest and dictatorships in the rest of the world. I see Ahmed occasionally and his presence guarantees high quality of performance plus a message of peace, friendship, camaraderie and inclusion. 'Moneka Arabic Jazz' is all about that. Vocalist Ahmed Moneka, actor and musician from Iraq has influenced Toronto music scene in a big way. His band included typical Torontonians -Iraqi, -Brazilian, Syrian, Lebanese, Greek, Sudanese, Algerian and even a Canadian born (jewish). His talented sister Tara sings with the band ocasionally.

Macy Gray was a no-show to close Montreal's jazz festival, so local artists The Brooks stepped in with several local vocalists.
Macy who?! What a show!! Jazz, soul, funk,...they even played some go-go!!! =D What a surprise to here go-go so far north of Adams Morgan and Shaw....!
