I caught this beauty preening late one evening. He held this pose for a while before flying off deeper into the woods in response to the call of his mate.

The vestiges of the massive complex of Bethlehem Steel where the steel the forms the so much of the steel that was used for ambitious projects such as the Goldengate Bridge was forged in Bethlehem Pennsylvania frames the massive steel stacks of the enormous furnaces rusted and frozen in time. Much of the steel of the famous New York City Landmarks, the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, bridges like the George Washington and of course the Goldengate were forged in the massive furnaces of Bethlehem Steel. The campus was enormous, these are vestiges of what remains and the enormous stacks and furnaces have been landmarked, preserved and the area turned into a multipurpose venue. Many things have been torn down at the rebuild continues, the corporate office building which was standing when I took this image was imploded, but there are these wonderful structures that remain that make an interesting photographic subject of what was. The open-hearth furnaces of Bethlehem Steel in Bethlehem Pennsylvania dormant since they last were fired up in 1995 were once producing an average of 23 million tons of steel per year during the 1950’s as Europe and much of the world rebuilt after the ravages of World War II. However during the economic downturns of the late 1970’s, newer more effective technologies became available as Germany and Japan rebuilt their steel industries and the top brass of Bethlehem Steel was hesitant to change to a newer technology because the hit the company’s bottom line would take a gamble that signaled the end of one of America largest manufacturers and employers. The furnaces with much rust have been preserved, the Steel Stacks as a testament to the industry that shaped the region. About a year ago, I was exploring out around Linfield when I found a view of the Limerick Generating Station cooling towers that I really liked. I've posted these before but since then, I always thought it would be nice to get the moon in between these towers.
Now, I'm not very good at planning anything and any decent moonshots you see of mine are often the result of being invited out to shoot something that has already been planned by someone else. However, last night, I did plan out this shot using the @photopills app (because it's what I have) and the alignment was essentially spot on. Since I've never really used this app extensively and still don't even fully understand it though, while the moon rose and ascended exactly where I wanted it, I basically blew it one way or the other in terms of poorly pre-planning my shot.
That said, I took plenty of long exposures of this scene including this one with the moon directly behind the right tower vapor plume which I feel is still a fine substitute for not getting the moon shot I was shooting for.

In Erie Pennsylvania exploring Lake Erie shore to partially snow covered Presque Isle and found this lovely lighthouse the Presque Isle Lighthouse. Construction on the square lighthouse began in 1872 and was complete in 1873. The original design called for cut stone blocks but that wasn’t fiscally possible, so the design was changed to building the lighthouse from the ground up with walls five bricks thick. So the original 6,000 bricks for the lighthouse were anchored off the shore right by where the lighthouse sits today, but then a Lake Erie storm hit, the scow with the bricks broke free dumping the bricks into Lake Erie which are still being found on the lake’s shores even today. Another Lake Erie storm struck a boat full of workers crossing Misery Bay to get to Presque Isle resulting to the loss of life of one of the workers attributed to the construction of the lighthouse. When built it was only 40 feet high but in 1896 and additional 17 feet and 4 inches were added to direct the light of the Fresnel lens further over Lake Erie and the white paint job on the bricks were to make it a day mark for lake travelers. The last Lighthouse Service keeper left in 1944 but the now automated light still serves as an aid to navigation on Lake Erie today and is on the grounds of the Presque Isle State Park. The Erie County Courthouse in the county seat of Erie Pennsylvania to the eye of the average beholder has twin wings with each with 6 Corinthian Columns supporting the pediments but there’s a story to the twin wings. The west wing was built between 1853-1855, the design of Thomas U. Walter. The second wing designed by Walter T. Monahan to copy the 1853 design, but was built 1929-1930, 70 years after the first wing. Captured this image of the east wing of the Erie County Courthouse at night. The 200 foot very oxidized Bethlehem Steel retired blast furnaces to the right of this image are part of the Steel Stacks complex which preserves what was the lifeblood of the steel that was used to build much of New York City’s skyscraper. Bethlehem Pennsylvania was built around the steel industry at its peak, Pennsylvania’s Bethlehem Steel Mills employed thousands of residents, its output building much of the skyscrapers and US navy’s ships for two world wars during it almost 120 years of production by the Lehigh River. For those of us residing in the USA, today we celebrate our country's independence. Take some time to study the history, what our forefathers said, did, and wrote, on this day, one that is foundational to our country.
Independence Day (aka, the 4th of July) is often celebrated with friends, family, grilled food, and fireworks. The effect seen in this fireworks image is from manually adjusting focus during a long exposure. Check out the following tips articles and the gear list below them:

I recently had the chance to visit a new waterfall; Frankfort Mineral Springs Falls inside Raccoon Creek State Park. In the grotto to the right of this frame are the famed, still active, mineral springs (more on that tomorrow). The falls itself is not large, but still breathtaking thanks to the deep cavern it flows over. I visited just after a storm passed and the late day sun emerged, casting awesome light and an eerie mist through the crag. Back in the mid 1800s through the early 1900s, folks came from all around to visit the springs here and partake in their “healing powers” while visiting a resort built above. There’s evidence that Native Americans used these springs as well. So upon walking up to the walls, I got a really neat sensation of history all around me, which is amazing. More on that spring later!
