Let FREADOM Ring: Celebrate Banned Books Week on 10/1 at 4:30 PT at Banned Books Week Town Square on ALA Island (197, 53, 61)

Dr. Rebecca Knuth, Professor of Library and Information Science at University of Hawaii at Manoa, recipient of the Sarah Vann Intellectual Freedom Award, and author of Libricide: The Regime-Sponsored Destruction of Books and Libraries in the Twentieth Century and Burning Books and Leveling Libraries: Extremist Violence and Cultural Destruction speaks on "Silencing Books: The Suppression of Ideas and FREADOM."
In addition, there will be a hunt, music, dancing, a photo contest and other activities. Attend in costume representing a banned/challenged book or author if you like; but this is not required.
Free costumes available on site. Have your photo taken and win prizes for best costume 1000L for 1st, 500L for 2nd, and 250L for 3rd.
Produced by the AVL LIS Student Union in SL by MLIS students from the University of Hawaii and San Jose State University, hosted by the American Library Association.

The Luskin Virtual Presence Kiosk is a multimedia display area in the Greenway Visitor Center. The kiosk provides visitors with viewing facilities for live camera feeds from the Hale Telescope dome, as well as a rotating collection of topical short videos and slideshows. The kiosk design is focused on presenting these media to all observatory guests, but particularly aimed at serving mobility-impaired visitors.

The Name-the-Garden Contest that took place during Banned Books Week was won by Second Life avatar, Bookie Balogh, who contributed the name Story Hour Garden!
We thank Bookie for the name, all the more so appropriate as it is the place of our book and other literary audio features, including StoryLines America.
Bookie had the choice of an ALA READ poster, and chose our poster featuring actor Sendhil Ramamurthy, who currently portrays Dr. Mohinder Suresh on the NBC television program, "Heroes."
