Bannock Co., Idaho
A Southwestern speciality, these get as far north as SE Idaho with small populations found in Wyoming and South Dakota.
I've been going over to Commonwealth Lake for the last few weeks, in anticipation of the arrival of the Osprey. I keep hearing about the Virginia Rail, and where to look for it, but hadn't been fortunate enough to see it - until Friday. Came out into plain sight - briefly - before darting back into the brush.
A pretty view when looking up while hiking in the Apple Orchard Falls trail there in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Great to see everything greening up and fun to be out on a glorious day with Mrs. Krach ... trying to get lost as she put it ;)

Several people have noticed that I don’t take wildlife photos. I even got challenged to take one (you know who you are Keith). I did get a fairly good picture of a chicken. Recently, I took a picture of a Vulture.
I am now moving on to bigger wildlife. I questioned whether cows could be considered as wildlife, but Western Thunderer said since it had four legs he would give me a pass on that.
Then there is Knut who is interested in what our cows look like here in Virginia.
So, I went out on a limb and took a picture of cows. They are very curious and calm animals and stood still for quite awhile so I could take their picture. The cow on the right was getting decidedly bored with me when I didn’t proffer any food.
Happy Fence Friday, friends.
Norfolk Southern's Virginian heritage unit isn't wasting anytime through the small town of Catlin, a town residing in Illinois' Vermilion County. It is on the point of intermodal train 21T from Harrisburg, PA to Kansas City, MO. The 21T is one of the hottest trains on the line, making it have priority over anything else, except the CN at Tolono. As always, the CN nabbed the 21T at their diamond in Tolono and made it wait for a northbound freight train. Once it cleared, the train got the light and proceeded towards Decatur where the crew will swap out with another.

If my encounter with the Connecticut Warbler was an exemplar of the most cooperative warbler, the Virginia's is an exemplar of the least cooperative.
The VW can be found most pervasively in Utah but also scattered around Nevada and Arizona with populations also in New Mexico, Colorado, and to a smaller degree southwest Texas.
I first encountered this bird in the Chisos Mountains in TX. That bird had no concern about accommodating my attempts to photograph it. The bird simply flitted very actively from twig to twig and from tree to tree. So that shoot didn't work out. I would have to try again, so I put this bird on my Utah target list.
When I found this bird and several of its friends west of Salt Lake City, I was excited immediately because I found the bird minutes after starting my search. However, the pair I found were extremely active as they gleaned insects from tree leaves. This was the best of hundreds of shots, but as we know as bird photographers, a better shot is waiting for us.
But not always. A half mile down the trail, I found several more. None of them were hard to see. The only problem was that they flew straight into the Scrub Oak. I stood in nearly the same place for two hours and got nothing.
I encountered the VW in other Utah locations, and the results were the same: extremely active birds of which I only got a couple passable proof shots.
The fun of this hobby is to try, try again.

Virginia City developed as a boomtown with the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, the first major silver deposit discovery in the United States, with numerous mines opening. The population peaked in the mid-1870s, with an estimated 25,000 residents. The mines' output declined after 1878, and the population declined as a result. As of the 2010 Census, the population of Virginia City was about 855, and that of Storey County was 4,000.
