This place in Zion National Park is called The Narrows. Here, the Virgin River is cutting a narrow slot canyon through the Navajo Sandstone Formation. The Navajo Sandstone is formed of sand dunes that burried the Zion area during the Jurassic Period (190 million years ago).

Wonderfully refreshing and a great landscape experience is a hike through the watercourse in the gorge of the Virgin River, especially on hot summer days.

Back to last fall in Utah.

One of the icons of the landscape photograph of the Southwest is the reflection of the watchman, who was illuminated by the evening sun, in the water of the Virgin River. Due to unfavorable sunshine around this time of year, the reflection was rather unspectacular.

The glow of the cottonwoods in the side sunlight was, in my opinion, the more beautiful motif on this day.

This autumn image is in Zion National Park. Can you see the fisherman giving scale to this scene? He is very small and standing on the sandbar. This fisherman was enjoying peace and quiet all to himself here on the Virgin River. This photo is evidence that various portions of the USA experience different autumn time visuals. Some areas of Utah were heavily colored but this valley continued to be dressed in green. And, yes, I chose to work on this sky here in a later rendition of this photo and was pleased with the posted result.

The Sentinel, a 7157' peak on the West Rim of Zion Canyon, catches the first rays of the sun as it rises above the eastern Zion Plateau.

The resultant glow of the brilliant light on the sandstone reflects in the Virgin River near the Sand bench Trail, some 3,000' below. On this winter morning, the temperatures along the Floor of the Valley were hovering around 27°F, with icy roads and fresh snow along the river and surrounding area. Fresh animal tracks from deer, turkey, and bobcat indicated that there was quite a bit of activity earlier in the morning than our time here.

The temperatures kept most tourists at bay until later in the morning, though sunrise on January 2 occurred around 7:45 AM - convenient for this preferably late rising landscape photographer. As the day wore on, with no shuttle service in Zion National Park during this time of year, the roads became thick with cars parked alongside regardless of the multitude of signs telling people to park in designated spots only.

Scenes like this, though, tell me that spending much more time in this park is warranted - though come early and explore before the crowds arrive.

A walk through the Narrows of the Virgin River in Zion National Park is always a special experience. Once in the morning the sun is higher the sunlight reflected from the rocks indirectly to the bottom of the canyon , so that the water glows gold (September-11, 2008, 11:04 am)

The lower latitude of the setting sun in winter brilliantly isolates the Mountain of the Sun in this image from the bank of the Virgin River.

At it's peak, Mountain of the Sun reaches 6722', which is about 2500' above this view point. The cool waters of the Virgin River flow through Zion Canyon, continuing to carve this gorge deeper and bringing ever more rocks into the stream.

Although the Lower Emerald Pools Trail is currently closed, the bridge across the Virgin River from the National Park Lodge remains open and allows one to reach this spectacular vantage.

If you've ever watched the Netflix series, Virgin River, you've seen this cabin. It's the one that Mel lived in. And it's been in so many movies....it was McGyver's cabin back in the 1980's, Stargate, and the list goes on and on. It is in North Vancouver, so yesterday, we decided to walk to it.

It's really tucked away, in fact, I didn't know it was there till last week. It's in Murdo Frazer Park - a short walk through the woods, and you're there, 10 minutes from a residential area and the highway is very close, but you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere.

It was originally built around 1950 as a wilderness hunting lodge, and the owner added the handmade duck pond you see here. North Vancouver District acquired it in 1969. Nowadays it is used only for filming at $2,500 a day. This year the cabin is going to be updated and it has been declared a heritage designation.

With all the water around here - the pond and MacKay Creek running through the park, everything is still pretty green here.

On my 2nd hike to the Subway in Zion National Park I started very early in the dark with a headlamp and after about 2 1/2 hours at 8 am I reached Archangel Falls shortly before the actual destination.

When I arrived at the Observation Point that day (the first day of this USA tour) after a hike of several hours, there was a heavy shower that cleared the air. Then there was more than 3 weeks of pure sun.

One of the most beautiful adventures in the American Southwest is hiking through the Narrows of the Virgin River.

A view of the Virgin River from the Riverside Walk Trail in Zion National Park. A short flat well maintained trail that follows the river. This park is a day trip from Las Vegas. It's a hikers paradise with numerous trails. It also has bike trails, camping and lodging. I was only there for a day but could've spent a week there. A great park that is entered from the bottom of canyon instead of the top. #NPS #ZionNationalPark #VirginRiver #hiking #Utah #川 #キャニオン

The Patriarchs are three neighboring sandstone peaks on the west side of Zion Canyon. Each is named after biblical fathers. From left to right (south to north) they are Abraham Peak, Isaac Peak, and Jacob Peak. Abraham Peak is the tallest at 6,890 feet. The white top of Jacob Peak rises behind the orange rock of Mount Moroni. The Patriarchs were named by Frederick Vining Fisher, a Methodist minister who ventured into Zion in 1916, labeling numerous prominent points in Zion Canyon. He decided to name these three peaks after Old Testament daddies, and the titles stuck.
