Câmara de Lobos municipality It was this traditional fishing village, situated five kilometres from Funchal , which inspired Sir Winston Churchill to paint its lovely surroundings. The village was given its name by the explorers João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira because of the shape of its bay and the many Mediterranean monk seals (‘lobos’) living there at the time

The historical village of Piódão is reminiscent of a crib because of the harmonious way in which its houses are arranged in the form of an amphitheatre.

The entire village of Piodão is made of almost entirely of schist, including the roads and paths between houses.

This village is located in the protected area, Tyresta National Park near Stockholm. A great area to visit, with forest, lakes, houses, and traditional farmers.

There are old stables and barns, residential houses from 18800s, but the village was inhabited in early Iron Age.

In the forest are parts with pristine pines, several hundred years old.

And this is only 20 km from Stockholm. All is free to visit.

You can hike here , it takes a day to go through the area, camp for a night or sleep in some of the small wind shelters built at any of the lakes.

On this trip to Uganda we used Ngoni Safaris Uganda. They provided excellent service. I highly recommend them.

The background info for this photo could start with:

“…The year is 50 BC. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not entirely... One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out against the invaders. And life is not easy for the Roman legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Totorum, Aquarium, Laudanum and Compendium...”

Talasnal is an isolated, very small and beautiful schist village in the center of Portugal, near Lousã and within the wider Serra da Lousã (Lousã Mountain) area.

From Talasnal you have several trails that quickly take you through lush vegetation to explore the mountain, where deer, roe deer, wild boar and many other animal species still lurk.

This shot was taken at sunset, from a vantage point. Golden hour light was bathing the village, creating a wonderful effect.

There are 27 schist villages in the center of Portugal, spread across the Lousã and Açor mountains. They are called schist villages because this is the stone, abundant in the region, that is used in the construction of the houses. The various shades of this rock, also used for paving the narrow winding streets, mingle seamlessly with the colours of the natural landscape.

Schist villages are so beautiful that an effort has been underway to preserve and rehabilitate them. A network of the 27 villages (“Aldeias de Xisto”) has also been created to promote them as a tourist destination.

The Titicaca floating islands are not just agricultural land, but real villages inhabited by groups of 3 to 10 families depending on their area. They include huts also made of totora, rushes with which the islanders also make basic furniture and beautiful bow boats in the shape of a puma head.

Megalochori in Santorini: Megalochori is one of the most traditional villages of Santorini. It lies on a hill and is characterized as a labyrinth of steep alleys and streets. Still untouched by tourism, Megalochori keeps its beautiful architecture with the picturesque square, the narrow streets, Neoclassical mansions and the typical cave houses of Santorini. It also offers a nice mix of white Cycladic houses, several blue Domed churches, bell towers, narrow alleys and uncountable vineyards which produce some of the most famous wines of Santorini.

"You need a village, if only for the pleasure of leaving it. A village means that you are not alone, knowing that in the people, the trees, the earth, there is something that belongs to you, waiting for you when you are not there."

- Cesare Pavese

Taken @ Soul2Soul Bay

The villages have a well-defined structure: each village is surrounded by an enclosure made of thorny bush shrugs, that protects the villagers from the attacks of predators. When you enter the village, in the centre, there is a second smaller thorny enclosure surrounding the area where the cattle are led to stay for the night, there they are protected from the attacks of hyenas and lions, who could pass the external enclosure. The fact that only the cattle are protected by a double barrier is a tangible evidence of how important animals are to the Maasai; they are more important than their own lives and they are willing to protect them by all means.
