;-)

The ring ouzel is the rarest of Ireland’s breeding thrush family. The distinctive male resembles a blackbird with a broad white crescent on the breast. Whilst not particularly retiring, its breeding habitat is upland mountain scree and as such ring ouzel requires some effort to see. Its melodic singing on the breeding sites or their alarm ‘chac’ calls on migration are often the first indications of its presence.
Found at higher mountains such as the Mournes or at coastal sites during migration
Requires upland scree with associated bracken and/or heather with nearby grassland for feeding
Best time to see the species is on spring or autumn passage
The ring ouzel is Red listed on both the UK and Ireland BOCC lists, and is of European Conservation Concern
The reasons for decline/extinction are not well known but likely to be linked to loss of habitat, afforestation and perhaps competition with blackbird and mistle thrush.
The ring ouzel (Turdus torquatus) is a mainly European member of the thrush family Turdidae. It is a medium-sized thrush, 23–24 centimetres (9.1–9.4 in) in length and weighing 90–138 grams (3.2–4.9 oz). The male is predominantly black with a conspicuous white crescent across its breast. Females are browner and duller than males, and young birds may lack the pale chest markings altogether. In all but the northernmost part of its range, this is a high-altitude species, with three races breeding in mountains from Ireland east to Iran. It breeds in open mountain areas with some trees or shrubs, the latter often including heather, conifers, beech, hairy alpenrose or juniper. It is a migratory bird, leaving the breeding areas to winter in southern Europe, North Africa and Turkey, typically in mountains with juniper bushes. The typical clutch is 3–6 brown-flecked pale blue or greenish-blue eggs. They are incubated almost entirely by the female, with hatching normally occurring after 13 days. The altricial, downy chicks fledge in another 14 days and are dependent on their parents for about 12 days after fledging.
The ring ouzel is omnivorous, eating invertebrates, particularly insects and earthworms, some small vertebrates, and a wide range of fruit. Most animal prey is caught on the ground. During spring migration and the breeding season, invertebrates dominate the adult's diet and are also fed to the chicks. Later in the year, fruit becomes more important, particularly the common juniper.
With an extensive range and a large population, the ring ouzel is evaluated as least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). There are signs of decline in several countries; suspected causes including climate change, human disturbance, hunting and outdoor leisure activities. Loss of junipers may also be a factor in some areas. Natural hazards include predation by mammalian carnivores and birds of prey, and locally there may also be competition from other large thrushes such as the common blackbird, mistle thrush and fieldfare.

Status: Widespread resident throughout Ireland. The owl species most likely to be seen in Ireland.
Conservation Concern: Green-listed in Ireland. The European population is currently evaluated as Secure.
Identification: Infrequently seen during the day, only active late at night. Most frequently seen flying across road in car head-lights. Appears a largely white, with a dark comma marking on the underwing. If seen during the day, has intricate pattern of brown and black streaks all-over. Has two obvious tufts on the head (do not serve as ears!) and orange eyes. Juveniles are beige, with an obvious black face mask.
Similar Species: Short-eared Owl, Barn Owl.
Call: Rather silent outside of the breeding season. Gives a rather quiet hooting display. Juveniles beg with a high-pitched squeak reminiscent of a rusty gate.
Diet: Hunts small mammals, frogs and birds. Has been observed taking migrant birds disorientated at lighthouses and other bright lights.
Breeding: Breeds in lowlands throughout Ireland, usually in a stand of conifers.
Wintering: Largely resident, though young birds will wander in search of new territories. During winter, may occasionally gather in communal roosts of between 5 and 30 birds.
Where to See: Widespresad throughout Ireland, but difficult to observe due to nocturnal habits. Best found by listening for the distinctive calls of adults and young.

The Ringlet shares some habitats with the Meadow Brown, though with a shorter flying season.
It is very dark brown in colour with small eyespots on the forewing and hindwing, more pronounced on the paler underside.
This species is common throughout Ireland.
This is a relatively-common butterfly that is unmistakable when seen at rest - the rings on the hindwings giving this butterfly its common name. The uppersides are a uniform chocolate brown that distinguish this butterfly from the closely-related Meadow Brown. Despite this uniformity, a newly-emerged adult is a surprisingly beautiful insect, the velvety wings providing a striking contrast with the delicate white fringes found on the wing edges. The dark colouring also allows this butterfly to quickly warm up - this butterfly being one of the few that flies on overcast days.
Variation in this butterfly is primarily focused on the rings on the hindwings, the lanceolata aberration being particularly striking, where the rings are elongated to form teardrops. Other aberrations occur where the rings are greatly reduced or completely absent. Huggins (1959) also describes a form in Kerry, Ireland, that is of normal size until 600 feet, when it starts to be replaced by a dwarf form that, at 1,000 feet, takes over completely.

Physical characteristics
Medium-sized, quite heavy, rather pear-shaped warbler, with relatively long wings. Plumage varies with wear from bright olive-green to dull grey-brown, upperparts little marked except by fairly distinct pale fore-supercilium and eye-ring and bright fringes to tertials and primary-tips. Underparts yellowish or cream, with pale fore-face and wide bright pale throat often contrasting with olive suffusion on side of breast and flank. Legs pale and bright. Sexes similar, some seasonal variation.
Habitat
Breeds in west Palearctic mainly in cool temperate middle latitudes, continental except in Englandand northern France, and largely lowland, although breeding in Switzerland up to 1500 m. Prefers damper and ranker sites, tufty, and fairly tall herbage, especially nettles, meadowsweet, willowherb, loose strife, wild rose and other woody or even be overshadowed by taller trees or bushes.
Other details
Acrocephalus palustris is a widespread summer visitor to central and eastern Europe, which constitutes >75% of its global breeding range. Its European breeding population is very large (>3,200,000 pairs), and was stable between 1970-1990. Although there were declines in Germany during 1990-2000, other populations increased or remained stable—including the key populations in Poland, Romania and Russia—and the species probably remained stable overall.
Feeding
Chiefly insects and arachnids, with some snails and rarely berries in late summer and autumn. Feeds by gleaning from vegetation in grass and shrub layer, also sometimes from lower branches of trees. In herbaceous vegetation often perches on dead stems, rarely hovers to pick off items, and occasionally flies up vertically to take insect
Conservation
This species has a large range, with an estimated global extent of occurrence of 1,000,000-10,000,000 km2. It has a large global population, including an estimated 6,400,000-14,000,000 individuals in Europe (BirdLife International in prep.). Global population trends have not been quantified, but the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e., declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern. [conservation status from birdlife.org]
Breeding
Breeds May-July in West and Central Europe. Nest site is built in tall, often dense vegetation, aslo low to medium scrub. Nest, cylindrical, sometimes tapering, cup of leaves and stems of dry grass and other plants, with more compact lining of finer material, plus hair and some plant down. 3-5 eggs are laid, incubation 12-14 days, by both sexes.
Migration
Locally common summer migrant of western Eurasia, from southern England, southern Sweden and southern Finland east to central and southern Russia, and south to the Alps, Italy, Greece, Black Sea, eastern Turkey and Iran. Winters in subtropical to tropical eastern and Southeast Africa. (Baker K 1997) Summer visitor central, east and south-east Europe including isolated localities in south UK, south Scandinavia, European USSR, Transcaucasus, east Turkey; winters east and south tropical Africa. Migrant Cyprus, Near East, Egypt. Scarce migrant/vagrant UK (outside breeding areas), Eire, Iberia. Vagrant Iceland, Faroe Is., Balearic Is., Norway (outside breeding areas), Sardinia, Malta, Kuwait, north-west Africa, Madeira. (Parmenter T Byers C 1991)

Habitat: This species is distributed locally where larval food plant is found, mainly in limestone areas of the midlands and west of Ireland.
It has only one annual brood.
Flight Times: The adult may be found at almost any time except mid-summer.
Larval food plants:
Buckthorn Rhamnus catharticus
Alder Buckthorn Frangula alnus
Hibernation: Overwinters as an adult butterfly
The male Brimstone is often found quite a long distance from its food plant.
The Brimstone hibernates as an adult but often comes out of hibernation on mild, sunny winter days returning later to resume hibernation.
Life Cycle of the Brimstone
Ovum:
The bottle shaped eggs are laid singly on the underside of leaves or shoots. They can be laid up to a height of 4 metres or more, between mid-April and the beginning of July, but peaking in May and early June.
They are c.1.3mm in height and initially nearly white in colour but after a few days become a deep yellow turning grey before hatching. The egg stage lasts c.2 weeks.
Larva:
The mature larva is between 32-34 mm in length with a green body which changes to a blue-green on the lateral surfaces above the white supra-spiracular line. The body is finely speckled with black bristles as is the green head. Larvae can be found in June and July. The early instar rests on the upper side
of the leaf along the midrid with it claspers at the base and feeds by eating down through the
layers leaving the characteristic holes, the later instar rests on the leaf edge or along a petiole
and eats the entire leaf. The larval stage lasts for c. 30 days.
Pupa:
When fully fed the larva leaves the food plant to pupate at a suitable site - generally the underside of a leaf or stem in low vegetation. The pupa is attached to the plant by the cresmater and supported by a loose silken girdle.
Pupation takes place in July and lasts c. 2 weeks.
Adult:
After emerging in early July the Brimstone butterfly is active untill the end of September but does not mate and lay eggs until the following spring. Instead it feeds extensively in order to fortify itself for hibernation.
It has a preference for purple and mauve flowers such as thistle, purple loosestrife, buddleia and teasle.
Towards the end of September it goes in search of a suitable hibernation site.
The upperside of the male Brimstone wings are a clear lemon yellow but the hindwings have a slightly greener hue. There is an orange spot in the centre of each forewing near the upper margin and in the centre of both hindwings, and a series of small brown spots along the wing margins at the termination of each vein.
The female Brimstone has much paler upper wings with a green tint.
Both male and female have sharply angled wings and prominent veins and when at rest the colour and shape of their closed wings closely resemble pale yellow leaves. This gives perfect camouflage while overwintering among the holly, ivy or bramble leaves between September and May.

Songs and Calls
A variety of clucks, cackles, grunts, and other harsh notes.
Eggs
6-11, sometimes 2-12. Buff to grayish with brown spots. Nests with more than 12 eggs probably indicate laying by more than 1 female. Incubation by both sexes, 21-25 days. Young: can swim well soon after hatching; follow parents and are fed by them. At night, young are brooded on a nest-like platform built by male. Young probably able to fly at about 7-8 weeks after hatching. 1 or 2 broods per year.
The American Coot is a plump, chicken-like bird with a rounded head and a sloping bill. Their tiny tail, short wings, and large feet are visible on the rare occasions they take flight.
Coots are dark-grey to black birds with a bright-white bill and forehead. The legs are yellow-green. At close range you may see a small patch of red on the forehead.
You’ll find coots eating aquatic plants on almost any body of water. When swimming they look like small ducks (and often dive), but on land they look more chicken-like, walking rather than waddling. An awkward and often clumsy flier, the American Coot requires long running take-offs to get airborne.
Coots are tough, adaptable waterbirds. Although they are related to the secretive rails, they swim in the open like ducks and walk about on shore, making themselves at home on golf courses and city park ponds. Usually in flocks, they are aggressive and noisy, making a wide variety of calls by day or night. They have strong legs and big feet with lobed toes, and coots fighting over territorial boundaries will rear up and attack each other with their feet. Often seen walking on open ground near ponds. In taking flight they must patter across the water, flapping their wings furiously, before becoming airborne.

Binomial name
Alle alle
Dovekie, also called Little Auk (Alle alle), small, black and white seabird of the North Atlantic.
Alle alle is the Sami name of the long-tailed duck; it is onomatopoeic and imitates the call of the drake duck. Linnaeus was not particularly familiar with the winter plumages of either the auk or the duck, and appears to have confused the two species.
Other common names include rotch, rotche, and sea dove, although this last sometimes refers to a different auk, the Black Guillemot, instead, the dovekie belongs to the family Alcidae (order Charadriiformes). It is about 20 centimetres (8 inches) long, with a short bill. Its legs and wings are short, and its feet are webbed. It is a proficient diver, feeding on fish, mollusks, and crustaceans. Dovekies breed on rocky coasts and islands of the Arctic Ocean, from Greenland to Novaya Zemlya, Russia. They nest in large colonies, each breeding pair laying a single egg in a rock cranny on a hillside, or, on peaty ground, in a burrow.
This is the only Atlantic auk of its size, half the size of the Atlantic puffin at 19–21 cm in length, with a 34–38 cm wingspan. The dovekie's weight ranges from 4.7 to 7.2 oz (134-204 g).
Adult birds are black on the head, neck, back and wings, with white underparts. The bill is very short and stubby. They have a small rounded black tail. The lower face and fore neck become white in winter.
The flight is direct, with fast whirring wing beats due to the short wings. These birds forage for food like other auks by swimming underwater. They mainly eat crustaceans, especially copepods, of which a 150 g bird require ~60,000 individuals per day (equivalent to 30 g of dry food weight),
but they can also eat small invertebrates and fish. Recent evidence suggests that the little auk feeds not by filter-feeding, but by visually guided suction-feeding.
They feed closer to the shoreline during nesting season, but when not nesting they scavenge for food in the open-ocean.
Little auks produce a variety of twitters and cackling calls at the breeding colonies, but are silent at sea.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Nymphalidae
Genus: Pararge
Species: P. aegeria
Binomial name
Pararge aegeria
Habitat: The Speckled Wood is widespread and common in Ireland seen typically along woodland clearing, hedgerows and fields.
This species is double brooded and possibly treble brooded
Larval Food Plant: Numerous grasses such as -
False Broom Brachypodium sylvaticum
Yorkshire-fog Holcus Ianatus
Flight Time:
Two to three overlapping broods which may be seen from
April to October
Hibernation: May overwinter in larval or pupal states
This species is territorial and patrols a beat. The male has a band of androconial scales on its forewing.
Life Cycle of the Speckled Wood
Ovum:
The glossy pale yellow eggs are c.0.8 mm high and flattened at the base. They are laid singly on the blades of
a wide range of grasses in April or May and again in the summer. Hatching occurs between 8-23 days,
depending on the temperature.
Larva: On emerging, the larvae do not always eat the eggshell but remain close to it on the leaf.
They feed inwards from the margins of the leaf to the midrib.
The first brood larvae feed by day and night and are fully grown in 25-30 days when they enter pupation.
The larvae of the late summer brood are unusual in that they either hibernate as larvae or pupate before
hibernating and therefore can be found overwintering in either state.
It has been found that when the autumn is cool, larvae emerging from eggs as early as mid-August remain
in the larval stage and overwinter in this state. While in warmer temperatures larvae emerging as late as
the end of September develop rapidly enough to pupate in November and overwinter in this state. These
pupae hatch the following spring producing butterflies as early as March but more usually in April and
May. While the overwintering larvae do not produce larvae until later in spring. This larval stage lasting
at least 7 months.
Pupa: The duration of the pupal stage is variable and dependant on temperature and time of year. In summer it may
be as short as 10 days, but in the overwintering pupal stage it can last roughly from November to April.
The pupa is attached by cremasteral spines to a silken pad spun on the underside of leaves of the foodplant
or adjacent vegetation. The cast larval skin is always attached to the pupa.
Adult:
Adults can emerge continuously from April to mid-October. There tends to be an overlap among different
generations and in warm summers there may be three broods with old worn specimens still on the wing
in October.
Both sexes feed on the honeydew of ash, oak and birch or nectar from ragwort. Mating and ovipositing
take place from April onwards.
The outer margins of the females wings are more rounded and the creamy-yellow patches usually larger
than the males althought there is a marked seasonal variation in bothe sexes.
The oblique band of blackish androconial scales in the centre of the male forewings are difficult to see.
Between the Berlin grey and grey you’ll sometimes find some fresh colors. A red bike, a girl with an unique style, in front of a wooden door. She opens it and shows you her home, her life, her studio.
Britta Arnold is a child of Berlin.
When you hear creeping high hats, hypnotic beats and a pop of acid, chances are you‘re hearing Britta Arnold from the console of her musical spaceship. Straightforward and distinctively poised, her unique blend of beats makes for a milkshake of cosmic potency. For this elegant fire red, her pledge to break norms and find the hottest music on the block has gained her quite the following and opened up a fantastic world of people, places and special moments. Since co-founding the Bar25 label in 2006, her nights are spent playing gigs anywhere between Asia, America and Europe, while many of her days are spent in the studio where she dreams up new music. She has released on Katermukke and Heinz, remixed tracks by ‘It boys’ Satori and Stavroz, and been remixed by the likes of Claude VonStroke and Ruede Hagelstein. Aside from this, her new musical project ‘Britta Unders’ with Amsterdam based Unders, is adding even more magic to her minutes. They are playing sets from sundown to sunrise together all over the world but also started a new label Happy Camper, this will be launched November 2017 with artists as Mira, Be Svendsen, dOP and Noraj Cue. When not doing these things, she’s probably planning her GRRR Mit BRRR party — a celebrated event at the Berlin club, Kater Blau.
A born and bred Berliner who never had to learn how to be one, Britta reflects the city in which she still calls home: a little edgy, a little down to earth and always filled with artistic ambition. Having once lived in a caravan with her cat ‘katuscha’ on the grounds of the Bar25, she takes this Happy Camper vibe with her into every space she enters, whether the club, the festival, the studio or a walk through her home town. With the support from her global electronic family pushing her in the right direction and a naughty box of tunes on her back, the future of this lady from outer space only goes from strength to strength. So get your space suit on and go intergalactic roaming with your best friends and lovers. Do it to the hypnotic and wired sound of Britta Arnold.

May 23rd 2009 | The Cinéma Maison. 387th day of occupation.
Tonight, two Guinean movies (french version)...
Au programme, deux films guinéens (VF)...
From 2 May 2008 to 7 August 2010, during 828 days, claiming residence permits, the “Sans Papiers” isolated workers of the group CSP75 occupied successively two buildings in Paris: first a Trades Hall at rue Charlot, then a disused public building, at rue Baudelique.
After fourteen months spent at the Trade Hall, on 24 June 2009 they got violently evicted by the Trade Union CGT's internal police. They stayed during three weeks sleeping outside, along the Trades Hall before they led the new occupation at rue Baudelique, on 17 July 2009.
One year later, under pressure of authorities, the CSP75 accepted to voluntary put an end to this more than two years long occupation, after being promised each occupier's case be examined and every one get a chance to receive a residence permit. This is how the CSP75 got out of Baudelique on 7 August 2010, 828th and last day of the occupation.
Struggle goes on...
