FutureCoast is a participatory storytelling game about climate-changed futures. In FutureCoast’s “authentic fiction”, the software system of the future has sprung a space-time leak, sending voicemails from different possible futures to the present as chronofacts. Since the leak is only in their voicemail storage, the people of the future take decades to get around to fixing it. Meanwhile, a team of Coasters decode these chronofacts and publish the voicemails so we get to listen to the messages that people leave for each other in the years 2020 to 2065 – by turns banal, jubilant, and mysterious.

In reality, the messages we are hearing have been created by people playing the FutureCoast game. We ask players to imagine a possible climate-changed future and then create a voicemail that someone left for someone else in that future. FutureCoast is thus a way to listen to diverse ideas about climate-changed futures and to be open to crowdsourced wisdom about them.

At the Games for Change Festival attendees were able to enter a FuturePhoneBooth in the Skirball Center lobby, where they can listen to different possible futures and even leave their own voicemail from a possible climate-changed future. The Coasters publish these voicemails to futurecoast.org with the tag G4C15.
