Hof van Lierde Castle
The Hof van Liere castle was built by the family van Lyere in 1465 as a feudal castle. The bailiffs of Santhoven and various noble families left their mark on the castle.
In the course of time, when the old ramparts proved to be less useful, they were demolished. Thus, the actual residential buildings became available and the once fortified place lost its grim appearance of medieval fortification.
In the first quarter of the 19th century, the castle was rebuilt and restored by Jacobus Meyers, lord of Zwijndrecht, Zandhoven and Vichte. In 1803 he had major renovation work carried out that formed the basis of the current castle.
In 1993 the castle was protected as a monument.

Het kasteel Hof van Liere werd gebouwd door de familie van Lyere in 1465 als feodale burcht. De schouten van Santhoven en verschillende adellijke families drukten hun stempel op het kasteel.
In de loop der tijden, toen de oude omwallingsmuren van minder nut bleken, werden deze gesloopt. Zo kwamen de eigenlijke woongebouwen vrij en verloor de eertijds versterkte plaats haar grimmig uitzicht van middeleeuwse verschansing.
Het kasteel werd in het eerste kwart van de 19de eeuw verbouwd en gerestaureerd door jonkheer Jacobus Meyers, heer van Zwijndrecht, Zandhoven en Vichte,. Hij laat in 1803 belangrijke verbouwingswerken uitvoeren die de basis hebben gevormd van het huidig slot.
In 1993 werd het kasteel beschermd als monument.
Het park is een 2,5 ha grote domein met inlandse bomen en is vrij toegankelijk voor wandelaars.
In het midden prijkt een neo-renaissancistisch kasteel uit 1876.
Eind 2005 werd het kasteel grondig gerenoveerd en werd er een restaurant in ondergebracht.

The Beukenhof van Vichte is a domain of 2.5 hectares, with a neo-Renaissance castle from 1876 in the middle of the park, and currently a restaurant.

The domain also contains spacious warehouses and horse stables that are now used by youth movements from Vichte.

Family memorial headstone to Private Eleazar Henry Horwood of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, killed in action on October 20, 1918, in Belgium, age 23. This headstone is located in Moreton's Harbour, Newfoundland. Private Horwood is buried in Harlebeke New Cemetery, Belgium. Note the interesting inscription that states he died while in command a Lewis Gun. Private Horwood was most likely killed in action attempting to capture the town of Vichte from German forces. This was one of the last actions the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was involved in during WW1, with the war ending three weeks later. So far from home. Rest in peace.

Son of Alfred & Mary Ann husband of Alice 89 Hougher Wall Audley He was married at St James Church, Audley in 1904 to Miss Alice Woodvine. They had the following children. Alice Ann born 1st October 1905, George James born 19th October 1906, Annie born 16th May 1909, Mary Elizabeth born 11th December 1911 and Thomas 14th February 1913. They may he been born at 89 Hougher Wall Audlem. Buried at Tehran War Cemetery Iran.
Some notes from what remains of his army records.
He first joined the army aged 18 on the 3rd January 1900 at Lichfield Staffordshire on was posted to the North Staffordshire Regiment Depot as private 6083. He was living at Lycett Staffordshire and was a collier. Fought on the second South African Boer War 21st June 1900. On the 1st January 1912 he was discharged on the termination of his first period of engagement. On the 20th January 1912 he rejoined and was posted to the Army Reserve to await mobilisation. That happened on the 5th August 1914 at Lichfield. He was given the same number and posted to the North Staffordshire Depot. He was posted to France on the 1st November 1914. He received a mild gun shot wound on the 12th January 1915 and treated at 17 Field Ambulance Bailleul France. He was also at the following places. 7th December 1915 at Gallipoli, Gozo (Malta) 14h January 1916, Sidi Bishr, Egypt 18th February 1916, Mesopotamia 12th May 1916, Basra 13th July 1916 Belgiun 2nd May 1917 Basra 15th August 1917. While at Basra he fell seriously ill with Typhus at Kasrin, Iraq on the 13th December 1918. He was dangerously ill with Broncho Pneumonia on the 29th December 1918 and died the following day.

PROCTOR/ER Frederick Private G/9648 4 London Regiment killed in action 11/6/1916. Born at Dudley Staffordshire, lived at Audley, enlisted in Stoke on Trent. In 1881 Frederick Proctor was a prisoner Walmgate Military Prison York Castle aged 20, native of Audley he was serving with the Staffordshire Regiment. In 1911 aged 30 he was with his wife Mary Jane, nee Harris at 21 Freehold Terrace, Middleport, Burslem, he worked as a loader at an iron stone mine.

Buried at Bray Military Cemetery Somme France. He joined the Australian Army on the 14th November 1916 at Sydney, New South Wales. He was aged 28 and 7 months occupation plumber. His father James of Diglake Street was his next of kin. He embarked from Sydney on HMAT 72 Bedtana bound for Devonport England on the 25th November 1916 with the 36th Battalion. He disembarked as Southhampton on the 29th January 1917 then to Larkhill and other various camps. He embarked from Southampton on the 2oth June 1917 disembarking the following day at Rouelles France with the 36th Battalion. 10th July 1917 he was in Belgium, France 15th September 1917, Belgium 3rd January 1918, Transferred to the 33rd Battalion in France 30th April 1918 and killed in action in the field on the 22nd August 1918

Boardman, of Ratcliffe, Manchester and he was the husband of H. S. Boardman, of "Kenyon Hall," Kenyon, Manchester. M.A., Peterhouse, Cambridge. Commemorated on the Brandhoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
BARROW James, Quartermaster. and Honorary Lieutenant , 8th Royal Berkshire Regiment. He died 1st June 1916 aged 47. He was the son of George Barrow and was the husband of Alice Barrow, of 12, Engadine Street, Southfields, London. He is at rest in Noeux-Les-Mines, Communal Cemetery, France.

FAULKNER Frank. Lance Corporal, 379371 Labour Corps, Demonstration Company, 5th Army School, British Expeditionary France, formerly Private 74413, South Lancashire Regiment, died 16th March 1918 aged 26. He was the son of Thomas and Fanny Jane. He is at rest in Newchurch, churchyard, Culcheth, Lancashire.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 6th December 1915 and was posted to the army reserve. He was aged 23 years and 353 days, he lived at Rose Cottage, Culcheth and was by occupation a stock keeper. He was mobilised on the 12th June 1917 to sent to the South Lancashire Depot, the next day he was sent to the 107th Training Reserve Battalion. On the 28th September 1917 he was posted to the British Expeditionary Force , France. In France he was then transferred to the 26th Labour Corps. On the 16th March 1918 at 6.pm he died of appendicitis and secondary haemorrhage at the Middlesex Hospital, Berners Street, London. At the time of his death he was Lance Corporal 397371, of the Headquarters area employment company, 5th Army Infantry School.

Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the 20th January 1915 and was posted the same day to the R.A.M.C. He was aged 21 years and 275 days old, he was an electrician and he lived with his parents, Levi and Mary at High Peak Cottage, Keynon, Leigh, Lancashire. He was serving with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 23rd September 1915 On the 2nd June 1915 he was transferred to the 3rd Border Regiment. On the 23rd September 1915 he was posted to the 1st Battalion, Border Regiment .On the 10th October 1915 he was with 1st Battalion at the Dardanelles. He embarked for France on the 10th March 1916. He was admitted to hospital with an abscess to his lower face on the 15th May 1916 and he was treated at 87th Field Ambulance. He was then transferred to 29th Casualty Clearing Station on the 17th May, and on the 18th transferred to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers. From there he was discharged fit for service on the 15th June 1916 to 29th Infantry Base Depot, Rouen. On the 5th July 1916 he rejoined his unit at the front and he was killed by a shell explosion on the 23rd October 1916. The last address for his mother, who was now a widow, was given as 29, Carr Lane, Lowton St Mary's, Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire.
HOUGHTON Harold. Rifleman Z/2537, A Company, 2nd Rifle Brigade died 24th March 1915 aged 25. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Houghton, of Risley, near Warrington, Lancashire. He is at rest in Croft Unitarian Chapleyard, Lancashire.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted at Winchester on the 2nd September 1914 and posted to the Army Reserve. He was aged 24 years and 4 months and was by occupation a labourer. His father, Thomas was his next of kin and he was living at the Old Noggin Inn, Risley, near Warrington, Lancashire. He was mobilized on the 19th January 1915. He was in action in France when he was shot, and wounded in the head on the 15th March 1915 and he was treated at the 11th General Hospital. On the 24th March 1915 he was transferred to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, Norwich and he died the same day in the hospital. His parents were now living at 674 Warrington Road, Risley.
GIBBON Thomas. Private Royal Engineers It may be the following. GIBBONS, Thomas, Sapper 167270, 126th Field Company, Royal Engineers, killed in action 22nd May 1918. He enlisted at Earlestown, near Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
GREEN John, killed in France on the 2nd August 1917 aged 27. He was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth of 483, Newchurch, Culcheth, Lancashire. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Newchurch churchyard, Culcheth, Lancashire. The CWGC have the following. Gunner 174387 J Green, 12th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, formerly 190789, died 1st August 1917. He is at rest in Belgain Battery Corner Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium Also commemorated on this memorial is Lt William James Hill.
GOODIER William. Private Royal Scots It may be the following person. GOODEAR William. Private 1788, 15th Lothian Regiment, Royal Scots, killed in action 28th April 1917 aged 38. He was born at Leigh and lived at Warrington, both in Lancashire. He was the son of John and Maria of Leatherbarrow Farm, Culcheth, Lancashire and formerly of 48, Twiss Green Lane, Culcheth, occupation, Clerk. He had previously served with the 6th Manchester Territorials. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

He is commemorated on a family memorial in Newchurch Churchyard, Culcheth, Lancashire and also on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He enlisted on the11th December 1915 aged 22 years and 176 days. He was a Foreman Taper in a cotton mill and his lived at 48, Church Lane, Culcheth with his parents. He was transferred to the army reserve and was mobilized on the 15th June 1916. He was later posted 2/2Battalion, 5th Lancashire Regiment. On the 25th November 1916 he was posted with his battalion to France. His line came under attack from German gas shells and he was affected by the gas, mild. He was treated at the 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing station on the 22nd July 1917, then on the 24th he was at 9th General Hospital and transferred to a Convalescent Hospital. Later his was discharged for duty and returned to his regiment.
SMITH William. Private 202252, 2/4th South Lancashire Regiment. Born 20th December 1879 and killed in action 27th September 1918. He was the son of John and Mary of 42, Common Lane, Culcheth. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Newchurch, churchyard, Cuklcheth, Lancashire and is at rest in Anneux British Cemetery, Nord, France.
TAYLOR Richard. Private 29795, 8th South Lancashire Regiment killed in action in France 14th June 1917 aged 20. He was the son of William and Mary Jane of 41, Shaw Street, Newchurch. He is commemorated on a family memorial in Newchurch, churchyard, Culcheth, Lancashire and also on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium (The CWGC have Dick, and died on the 13th.)

He embarked Southampton on the 22nd December 1916 disembarked at Harve the next day. He marched into 6th Infantry Base Depot and was posted to the 8th South Lancs on the 5th January 1917. He was killed in action on the 13th June 1917

His sister, Hellen of 10, Leek Street, off Elor Street, Manchester was his next of kin. While he was stationed at Barry he was tried by District Court Martial on the 22nd October 1917 for an offence he committed on the 5th September 1917. He did, while on active service did desert His Majesty's Force, he was given 6 months detention . On the 18th November 1917 he was posted to France and he joined his unit at Etaples on the 21st November 1917, from 34 Infantry Base Depot
BALL, John James Flitcroft. Private 22354, 9th South Lancashire Regiment died 14th October 1918 aged 27. He was the son of William and Margaret, of Sandiway Head, Croft, near Warrington, Lancashire. He is at rest in Kirechkoi-Hortakoi Military Cemetery, Greece.
Some notes from what remains of his army record. He joined up on the 18th April 1916 aged 24 years and 6 months. He lived with his parents at Tinckle Street, Croft, Lancashire and was employed as a cowman. He was posted to Salinica on the 7th November 1916 and he died in 80th General Hospital, Salonica of Bronchitis and Malaria on the 14th October 1918.
A bottle of Duchesse De Bourgogne from Brouwerij Verhaeghe in Vichte, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium at HÃ¥ndverkerstuene in Oslo.
Duchesse de Bourgogne is a traditional top fermented red ale from the West-Flanders region of Belgium. This refined ale, also known as "The Burgundies of Belgium", is a blend of 8 and 18 months old ales following careful maturation in oak casks. The end product is a 6,2% sour-sweet ale with a vinous character from the oak.
It poured a clear but deep reddish brown color with a massive bubbly head. Wonderful sour sweet aroma, with a balsamic vinegar note from the oak. The mouthfeel was medium to light with a crisp sourness. The flavor started out with a caramel sweet note, then sour cherries and that balsamic vinegar note I noticed in the aroma. Its such a balanced beer, with the sour and sweet flavors in perfect harmony, both lingering in the finish. A world classic and the perfect beverage for introducing wine lovers to beer!

Trivia:
The painting on the label shows Mary of Burgundy (1457-1482) aka "the duchess of Burgundy". She was married to the Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian I and was much loved by her Flanders subjects. At the age of 25, while out falconing with Maximilian (the falcon is also shown in the label) her horse tripped and fell over Mary, breaking her back. Mary died a few days later and lies buried in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges. Today, Brouwerij Verhaeghe brews this beer in her memory.

Vichtenaar is a 5,1% abv Flemish-style Oud Bruin brewed with roasted malts, spicy hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well. After primary and secondary lagering, Vichtenaar gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels for 8 months - like an oud bruin should.
It poured a clear, Coca Cola-like color with a white head. It had an aroma of sour cherries and hints of wood. It was fairly light in body, but with a sparkling carbonation. The flavor was fairly tart, with a noticeable oak character and sour cherries which lingered in the aftertaste. A fairly dry but well made oud bruin, refreshing and very drinkable.

Vichtenaar is the base beer used to make the Duchesse de Bourgogne.
A glass of Caves, "het bier van Lier" ("the beer from Lier"), served on draft at 't Kroegske in Ostend.
Caves is actually an old style of beer, originating in the Duchy of Brabant in the 12th century and brewed mainly in and around the village of Lier, on the south east outkirts of modern Antwerp. It's one of those sour sweet ales so famous in Belgium, from styles such as fruit lambics to oud bruin. At one point 17 breweries made Caves in Lier, but in 1967 the last one closed and the style was dead. However, in 1976 the guild Heren van Lier ("Lords of Lier") decided to revive the style and contacted Brouwerij Verhaeghe in Vichte to brew it and that is where this 5.8% abv sour sweet ale has been brewed ever since, about 100 km south west of its historical roots.
The beer poured a clear copper brown color with a beige head. It sported a good sour sweet aroma, with notes of lactic acid and toffee. Mouthfeel was medium heavy with soft carbonation and a light acidic bite to it. The flavor balanced between a good lactic sourness and malty sweetness, with some fruity notes. It finished sour with some sweet notes lingering. Highly enjoyable.
Note: Caves is only available on draft at 't Kroegske and one pub in Lier, so it's a rare treat.
A glass of Verhaeghe Pils on draft at a pub in Vichte, West Fanders. This is a refreshing but pretty standard pale lager from Brouwerij Verhaeghe.

Goswin van der Vichte richtte een verblijf op voor zichzelf, het huidige 'Oud Kasteel' aan de Vichteplaats. Het gelijkvloers van dit gebouw, dat duidelijk een Romaanse invloed vertoont, bleef bewaard en wordt nu als kelderverdieping gebruikt. Het was aanvankelijk een woontoren op een motte, een aarden heuvel omringd door water en toegankelijk via een ophaalbrug. Een tweede omwalling sloot het neerhof af, dat over een tweede ophaalbrug kon worden bereikt.
De grote schuur aan de zuidzijde van het neerhof werd opgericht rond 1500, zoals blijkt uit de ingemetselde wapenschilden van Vichte en Vichte-Wielant. Duchesse de Bourgogne has been sitting in my fridge for approximately two months now, so.. yeah.. time to review. This is one of the newer Belgian beers now available in Manitoba through the MLCC, so.. keep them coming as I love Belgian beers!
Appearance: A nutty brown with a red-caramel hue, half a finger of cookie dough/beige foam.
Aroma: This cranky beer blogger isn't cranky what-so-ever.. it has a pungent sour cherry aroma overflowing and spilling? into my nose! This is almost like a fruit wine, almost like a nice merlot as well. A bit malty, acidic and slightly vinegary.
Taste: Whoa there.. that's one sour beer! It's quite a dessert-themed beer. It's not too sour, but enough to give me goosebumps. It's sour cherry with a bit of rich oak. Incredibly sweet, yet very delectable. Simple, but sweet!
Overall Thoughts: This beer didn't need much introduction, it's a sour cherry beer - it's DAMNED tasty, especially if you are looking for a dessert beer in lieu of Kriek or Unibroue Ephemere Cassis. This beer, in fact, as soon as I opened 'er up, reminded me substantially of another Belgian beer, Kasteel Rouge, which is no longer available in Manitoba. Kasteel Rouge was a very sour, sweet and cherry-filled beer. Compared to Kasteel, Duchesse de Bourgogne has more of a nice rich dark Belgian ale appearance (compared to a faux-wine for Kasteel), and Duchesse is not as near sour/tart. The Duchesse de Bourgogne (a Flanders Red Ale) costs $3.33 before tax, and has an ABV of 6.2%, so savour this with some cheesecake sometime!

A bottle of Vichtenaar from Verhaeghe in Vichte, Belgium.
Vichtenaar is a 5,1% abv traditional oud bruin, which means it has gone through three fermenation steps - where the ternary fermentation happens in oak vessels where the beer is also aged for 8 months. It poured a dark, reddish brown color with a tan head. It sported a sweet malt aroma with hints of oak and balsamic vinegar, not that different from a Duchesse de Bourgogne. The mouthfeel was medium heavy to light, with an almost sticky sweetness. The flavor started out with a pretty strong malt sweetness which was only partially balanced by a mild sour note from the oak - giving it a mild fruity character. The finish was fairly sweet too, with just hints of sourness.
Overall, a bit to sweet for my palate, I would go for the Duchesse instead.
A bottle of Christmas beer from Brouwerij Verhaeghe in Vichte, Belgium, at Café Botteltje in Ostend.
Verhaeghe Noël is a 7.2% abv Belgian strong ale brewed for the Christmas season. It poured a hazy, golden color with a white head. It had a strange bread dough aroma, very yeasty with some cereal notes. Mouthfeel was medium to light with a soft carbonation. The flavor was sweet, fairly malty, with some yeast notes too. And that's it.
Overall a bit boring beer, very disappointing to be the Christmas beer from Verhaeghe.
De bouwgeschiedenis van de oude parochiekerk van Vichte (Anzegem) gaat terug tot de 12de eeuw. Rond 1110 richtte Goswin, de eerste Heer van Vichte, samen met de monniken van de Sint-Diederiksabdij van Reims (Frankrijk), een typische landelijke bidplaats op. Het kerkje was oorspronkelijk een zaalkerk, opgetrokken met breuksteen afkomstig van Doornik, en werd in de 14de eeuw omgebouwd tot een kruiskerk. De uitvoering van de toren is zeldzaam voor Vlaanderen. De eikenhouten torenconstructie die afgedekt is met schaliën, werd pas later bij de naar Frans-Romaans model opgetrokken klokkenmuur toegevoegd. De twee ongelijke gaten dienden dan weer voor de ophanging van de klokken.
De kerk, die in 1939 werd beschermd als monument, fungeerde tot 1962 als parochiekerk. Daarna vond de gemeentelijke bibliotheek er onderdak. Sinds 1996 vormt het kerkje dan weer het decor voor culturele manifestaties.

Er waren ook nog andere gebouwen en een brouwerij, maar die werden in 1918 erg beschadigd en afgebroken. Het kasteel werd in 1973 besc hermd als monument. Samen met zijn onmiddellijke omgeving vormt het ook een beschermd landschap.

De bouwgeschiedenis van de oude parochiekerk van Vichte (Anzegem) gaat terug tot de 12de eeuw. Rond 1110 richtte Goswin, de eerste Heer van Vichte, samen met de monniken van de Sint-Diederiksabdij van Reims (Frankrijk), een typische landelijke bidplaats op. Het kerkje was oorspronkelijk een zaalkerk, opgetrokken met breuksteen afkomstig van Doornik, en werd in de 14de eeuw omgebouwd tot een kruiskerk. De uitvoering van de toren is zeldzaam voor Vlaanderen. De eikenhouten torenconstructie die afgedekt is met schaliën, werd pas later bij de naar Frans-Romaans model opgetrokken klokkenmuur toegevoegd. De twee ongelijke gaten dienden dan weer voor de ophanging van de klokken.
De kerk, die in 1939 werd beschermd als monument, fungeerde tot 1962 als parochiekerk. Daarna vond de gemeentelijke bibliotheek er onderdak. Sinds 1996 vormt het kerkje dan weer het decor voor culturele manifestaties.

The Poperings Nunnebier is a 7,2% abv Belgian ale brewed for the Nevejan beer shop in Poperinge, West Flanders, using the hops from that area.
It poured a hazy, golden amber color with a white head. The aroma sported a mild hop character and some malt sweetness. The mouthfeel was medium to light, with a creamy carbonation. The flavor started out with a good dose of malt sweetness, some yeast notes and a light fruitiness. The hops added a nice bitterness, halfway through the sip, a bitterness that mixed well with the malt and lingered in the finish.
A bit strong on the malt, for being a hop bier, but very decent.
