On June 22nd a message was sent out nationwide, not only to Verizon executives, but to members of its board of directors, that workers deserve a fair contract, not more corporate greed.
Board members get a cool $230,000 just for serving on Verizon's board. That's more than three top technicians who provide quality service to customers earn.
CWA activists are reminding these board members that they share in the responsibility to make sure that Verizon negotiates fairly with workers instead of demanding $10,000 a year from each worker in compensation cuts.
This image is bit of a metaphor—and not one I considered when composing. While walking along Mission at Mississippi in San Diego’s University Heights neighborhood, I observed what looked like brand new Verizon Wireless gear on a utility pole. I vaguely remembered seeing a work crew hoisted up a lift couple days earlier. Is the hardware supporting 5G, perhaps? You tell me.
If you follow the Internet conspiracies (I don’t) about the origins of SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2), which causes COVID-19, 5G is blamed. In this photo, you could read it as “Stop 5G” or there is only “one way” to the future of cellular wireless. Choose one or neither, but hence the unintended metaphor—and I suppose that should be plural, eh?
Verizon workers are striking to preserve strong union jobs for themselves and those who come after them. It is an important strike that will set the terms of the relationship between the CWA and Verizon for years to come and one that has implications for all workers.

A wall will be erected across the front of the room to hide the brick but also allow for easy access for wiring for the projector install. (Running an HDMI cable from the back of the lowboy stand to the projector.).
