The Araya Peninsula is a peninsula on the Caribbean Sea, located in Sucre State, northern Venezuela.
The peninsula is part of the eastern Serranía del Litoral mountain range, in the Venezuelan Coastal Ranges System of the northern Andes. It extends eastward from the coastline. The town of Araya is located on its westernmost extremity.
The western tip of the Araya Peninsula is known for its large, purple-colored natural salt pans, which became a major site of salt mining during the colonial era. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the region was regularly mined for salt by Dutch smugglers, who reportedly numbered one hundred ships annually. The smuggling industry in the region was temporarily stymied by a Spanish punitive expedition sent in 1605, although it soon recovered. Eventually, in 1618, Spanish forces began constructing the fortress El Castillo de Santiago de Araya to guard the peninsula. When it was completed in 1665, the fortress permanently put an end to Dutch incursions.
The salt mines of the Araya Peninsula were the setting of the award-winning 1959 documentary film Araya by filmmaker Margot Benacerraf.
Some scientists are unsure as to if this is a “new” species of moth. Scientists agree that the pictures that Dr. Anker took are of a real moth and they do not disagree that the moth pictured exists. But some experts believe that the pictures are of an already discovered moth – such as the similarly looking muslin moth. So the jury is still out as if the Venezuelan poodle moth is a “new” species of moth or not.
Was only discovered in 2009, when it was photographed by zoologist Arthur Anker in the depths of the Canaima National Park.

Well, this was a surprise! I thought I had a general feel for the Caracas of my youth, but until I saw this photo I had no idea there were houses like this.
Now that I think about it, it makes sense. I used to have a society magazine from the days of Venezuela's oil boom in the 1950s. The ostentatious display of luxury goods and high living was staggering. Cadillacs, furs, jewels, ritzy parties, haute couture - the Venezuelan elite had it all. Caracas had modern office towers and an impressive freeway system. A cable car connected Caracas with the coast via the Ávila, the mountain peak that dominates the landscape.
So of course rich Venezuelans would have imported the latest architectural designs from the United States.
I sure wish I knew what part of the city featured these splendid residences. I wonder how they fared in the 1967 earthquake, which registered 6.6 on the Richter scale.
