The cucumber - as well as the gherkin - belongs to the botanical species Cucumis sativus. They differ only in appearance and in their possible uses. The species Cucumis sativus probably comes from the north of India.
The cultivated form, which probably originates from the wild form Cucumis sativus spp. agrestis, was already known in India about 3,000 years ago and was also spread in Egypt and other countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The Romans brought the crop to France, from where it spread further across Europe.
