Any evening shot from Stanley Park looking at the skyline of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This is one of my favourite places. I spent a lot of time in this area growing up.

The explorer’s statue in front of the King’s Lynn Custom House.

George Vancouver was born in Lynn 22 June 1757, the son of a customs collector. He sailed with Captain Cook on his 2nd and 3rd voyages of exploration as a midshipman in training and then midshipman. The 3rd voyage first took him to the coast of British Columbia and then Hawaii where he narrowly escaped Cook’s fate.

In 1791 he captained the ‘Discovery’ tasked among other matters to chart the North American western coast and search for the fabled North West Passage. He surveyed and explored the coasts of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. In a subsequent season he extended his exploration to Alaska.

His charts, maps and drawings were remarkably accurate, in use for decades afterwards and laid the foundations for knowledge of the North Pacific coast.
