VALLEY VILLAGE - A fire sparked and fueled by a neglected natural Christmas Tree on January 9, 2017, heavily damaged a second-floor apartment in the 4700 block of Ben Avenue. A functional smoke alarm in the burning unit thankfully alerted the two women occupants, who were amazingly able to escape their residence without serious injury, but will be temporarily displaced by the fire. The Los Angeles Fire Department noted that the tree had remained attached to the temporary wooden sales stand since purchase, rather than a safety stand with filled water reservoir as strongly recommended by firefighters.

Three academics have pooled their talents to produce a new hardback guide to the 240 bird species which have been recorded in the Ukraine region.
The book includes a photographic depiction of the local birds that covers their seasonal plumages and also their age and sexual dimorphism characteristics. There is also condensed information about the most important features of the avian species that would help to identify those birds in the wild. The data about the regional distributions, where and when to find, behaviour and their conservation status are also published.
This book is aimed at birdwatchers, biologists, naturalists, biology teachers, students of biology and agricultural specialists.
The three authors of Birds of Vinnytsya (Ukraine) Region are: Olexander Matviychuk, PhD, Associate Professor of the Department of Biology of Vinnytsya State Teaching University; Andriy Pirkhal, MS, a biologist at the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases “Vinnytsya Regional Laboratory Center of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health”; and Alexander Viduetsky, PhD, a member of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (Valley Village, California, USA).
The project was sponsored by the Vinnytsya Regional Administration, Vinnytsya Regional Union and Regional Department of Ecology and Natural Resources; and the manuscript was approved by the Scientific Committee of the Vinnytsya State Teaching University.
This book (ISBN: 978-966-924-582-3) is written in Ukrainian, with the Birds Indices in Ukrainian, Latin, English and Russian.
I am delighted that the authors selected some 170 of my bird photographs to help illustrate the book.
Whole lot of retro buzz in this one! So are things still retro if they've been here from before things were called retro? Does that make sense? No 'neo-neon' here, this is the real deal. The oldest art supply store in Los Angeles...alive and well :-)))
This does really pop in Lightbox. . .

Walking in the hood I found this random declaration of affection painted on a the stars of the Milky Way -- or maybe just the celestial asphalt. I wish them all the best.
Whoever they are.

I had occasion to fly from Los Angeles to Grand Junction and was fortunate enough to have the best window seat I've ever had. We took off out over the water from LAX and then looped south and flew directly over the L.A. Basin and the San Gabriel Mountains before heading across the Mojave Desert, over Central Nevada and Southern Utah before touching down in GJ. All in all, it was a great 85 minutes (even though a one-hour delayed departure made me miss a tee time!)
I particularly enjoyed this view because it is mostly our old 'hood - Studio City, Universal City, Toluca Lake, Sherman Oaks... and the rest of the wonderfully warm San Fernando Valley!

KTLA's Wendy Burch on the scene in Valley Village getting the scoop with Fire Chief Steve Ruda.
LAFD ran into a little problem responding to another water main break in the San Fernando Valley this morning. All firefighters reportedly made it out of the vehicle after it hit a sinkhole. This kerfuffle had choppers peppering the sky in the early morning hours.
With two water main breaks within days and within a few miles of each other, people are beginning to wonder if there is a deeper problem. Pun intended.
