Glass tubing equipped with electrodes is evacuated by a vacuum pump (3 inches of mercury), a high voltage from antique spark coil is applied (approximately 1700 volts), forming a low-energy plasma, and then the effect of a strong magnetic field from an electromagnet, modified from an iron-core transformer core carrying much direct current (about 6 amps), is observed in darkened room.
Constriction of the pale violet-colored low-energy plasma within the magnetic field was observed and photographed as part of a science project.
Plasma = fourth state of matter
Similar experiments were performed by Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) with alternating current in the late 1880s except using much higher voltages at extremely high frequencies.
Episode 3a: rangefinder adjustment
A lot has been said about this topic. Some totally disapprove any kind of single-handed manipulation of the rangefinder system. Others claim it’s a natural thing to do, tuning the RF alignment. Moreover, it wouldn’t be all that difficult doing so. The first group would typically tell you the rangefinder system rarely moves, while the second group would expect the rangefinder to shift almost every week. And opinions on whether you should or should not pick up the screwdriver yourself range from absolute paranoid to unrestrained Mad Max.
I think the first group is closer to the truth when it comes to the frequency at which a rangefinder system can shift.
My M7 approaches the age of 20, and it’s the first time the rangefinder is off-target. Those who belong to the second group, well … I wonder how they treat their gear in the first place.
I got suspicious of my camera’s functioning when my film returned from the lab (again), showing all 150 mm shots consistently out of focus, and not just a bit.
I’m afraid that due to shipping the camera to Lisbon before - ironically for a service intervention (see episode 1) - the rangefinder alignment got shaken up. I wonder how TNT would have returned my camera if the package wouldn’t have those 200 flaming red stickers on it screaming ‘FRAGILE !!!’.
After I had read many blog pages describing the rangefinder alignment procedure, I felt strengthened by numerous of people confirming they had been successful tuning the rangefinder themselves. As a matter of fact I couldn’t find one testimony of someone who had ruined his/her camera otherwise. Okay, ruining your own camera wouldn’t be something to brag about, but I wanted to go for it anyway.
The picture above shows the tool set to get things done: a wine bottle vacuum pump, a 1.8 mm flat/slotted screw driver, a wooden toothpick and some acetone.

Endless glass tubing is evacuated and plasma created via high voltage applied to external electrodes. Magnetic fields are created from various coils carrying direct current or sometimes alternating current. Small voltage is measured across internal electrodes within a strong magnetic field between poles of modified iron-core coil made from a transformer.
Here I attempted to show the spot at the end, but it doesn't show up well. The spot was very large and I could see a lot of plasma around the filament. I even tried to heat the assembly to bake out gas, but couldn't pump it down far enough with only a mechanical backing pump.
One day I stumbled onto my collection of mini crt's that I had been gathering back when I was making the worlds smallest Pong games. I wanted to see if I could pull enough vacuum with my two stage backing pump, to still see the electron beam on the phosphor.
I removed the yolk from the tube, so I only had a single spot when powered up.
I grabbed copper and brass plumbing parts and machined compression seals. (the type the have a sliding tapered collar that compresses an o ring)

This is a 2 stage vacuum pump capable of pulling a 98% Vacuum, which is more than enough for composites work. I don't know why it looks crooked but in reality it's not.

Bicycle inner tube stretched over the end of a Vacuvin pump to create a cushioned seal between the hard plastic of the Vacuvin and the hard metal surface of a jar lid.
This allows the use of a Vacuvin wine saver pump on storage jars with home-made valves to vacuum dry-store food.
