The 35 mm camera Exakta VX 500 was produced in Dresden from May 1969 to December 1970. For legal reasons, this series only bears the name "VX 500" for export purposes. For the same reasons, the lens is called "from Jena", it comes from the Carl Zeiss company. The VX 500 was to be the last version of the "classic Exakta". My specimen has been thoroughly overhauled, even the lens is like new! I particularly enjoyed taking black and white pictures with it.

1950s German-produced 35mm camera, made in Dresden. Meyer Gorlitz 58mm f1.9 lens.
It seems to work well mechanically, although the fabric shutter curtain had light leaks. I repaired that, but have not had any film through it yet.

Another crappy photo of a really cool subject.
After finishing up their work spotting Gilberton Coal Company's anthracite load out RBMN train QASD (Tamaqua to Shenandoah) is paused at the west end of Mahanoy City Yard with SD40-2s 3068 (blt. Sep. 1978 as Conrail 6446) and 3052 (blt. Apr. 1980 as MP 6072) seen here at about MP 11.6 on modern day RBMN's Mahanoy and Shamokin Branch.
Spreading out behind and around me is the weed choked but still lightly used remains of the once vast yard which once served the largest anthracite breaker ever built. The famed St. Nicholas Breaker once stood about a mile behind me and was served by a branch reaching north from here. You can learn more about that facility and see photos here:
undergroundminers.com/st-nicholas-breaker/
The abandoned yard office was Conrail's base of operations prior to sale of these lines to RBMN and presumably the latter used it for some time as the lettering on the building is in CR blue and white but with Reading and Northern's name. So this begs a few questions for the local or area experts. When was this yard office built and when was it abandoned? How many jobs did RDG base out of here at the end in 1976 and how many did CR have fourteen years later when they pulled out? And lastly what does VX stand for? Is that the call letters of this station preaumably for an operator once based here Does it go back to Reading days? I would be most grateful for any and all information.
As for the railroad, this is the former Reading Railroad Mahanoy and Shamokin Branch which has a convoluted history in the area when the East Mahanoy Railroad and the Mahanoy and Broad Mountain Railroads were fighting over the lucrative anthracite traffic and building parallel lines up the valley. Ultimately by the mid 1860s all had come under the fold of the Philadelphia and Reading and per Trains magazine:
The M&S Branch was once part of the Reading Railroad’s main line from Philadelphia to Shamokin, Pa., and beyond to Williamsport, Pa., route of the onetime flyers King Coal and Williamsporter. [Note: technically the RDG main officially ran from Philadelphia to Pottsville and all other territory inlcluding this was considered a bramch]. In the 1920s, 14 weekday passenger trains served Girardville, the turn-back point of the R&N trip. Many of Reading’s 51 steam-powered Iron Horse Rambles (1959-1964) also traveled the line. Scheduled passenger service on the M&S ended when the remnant of the King Coal made its final run on June 28, 1963. Ultimately this line passed to Conrail in 1996 and was purchased by the RBMN in 1990 as part of the 129 mile 'Reading Cluster'.
