Ultrawideangle lens for Leica M and Cosina Voigtlander Bessa 135-format rangefinder cameras.

Not a "standard" normal for Micro Four Thirds (25mm ~ 50mm), but with a 44.8-degree horizontal angle of view, this lens' measured focal length of 21.6mm (135 ~ 43.2mm) is the exact measure of the diagonal of the Micro Four Thirds ("m4/3") sensor, and is closest to the Central Horizontal Angle of View (AoV) of normal human vision.

Note that m4/3 is the only format where 22mm (the focal length of the human eye) is within the range of focal lengths considered normal (m4/3: 19-26mm / 135 ~ 38-52mm; see the Equivalent Focal Length and Depth of Field Chart in the Kodak Professional Photoguide [1986], p. 32 and www.lensrentals.com/blog/2009/03/the-camera-vs-the-eye).

The 16:9 aspect ratio is closest to that of binocular human vision, and at this focal length, yields a vertical AoV of 27-degrees: the same as 50mm (~135 @ 3:2 .)

In the past, I've used 35mm lenses (Nikkor 35mm f/2, SMC Pentax 35mm f/2) as a "wide normal" (following the example of many great photojournalists); but, for me, it's just too dam'd wide for "normal", and a "standard" 50mm was always too short: this focal length gives me the best attributes of both focal lengths -- in a single lens: simplify, simplify, simplify.

This lens, on an m4/3 [17.3 x 13mm] camera, has about the same horizontal AoV as the Zeiss Contax-Yashica "Hollywood" 28mm f/2. Highly sought after by cinematographers (as all 35mm studio films from 1932-1952 were shot in 11:8 Academy ratio) the "Hollywood" is also popular as a landscape lens for 135.

In use, this camera/lens/EVF combination is very similar to the shooting experience that I had when a good friend lent me her uncle's prized Leica IIIf, collapsible Summicron 50mm f/2, and V100H optical viewfinder -- and indeed, the form factor is closer to that of the Leica IIIf, than the Leica M rangefinder.

In fact, the Olympus VF-2 (sans eyecup) is about the same dimensions as the Leitz-Wetzlar V100H (a/k/a "Imarect" in the US) -- I know this because I bought one to mount in the hotshoe of my Canon G12, which (as all Canon Powershot G-series cameras) had abyssmally poor optical viewfinders, which Canon steadfastly refused to redress ... arrogant.

And, I still have it (the V100H, that is) -- I gave the G12 to my sister when I bought the Fuji X20 that the above photo was taken with (I'll never buy another Canon,)

[Sidebar: I love the Fujifilm 2/3" X-Trans sensor: and, I'd kill for a m4/3 version (Fujifilm, are you listening?)]

Although I wish this lens were faster -- say, f/2 (max. aperture of the human eye is f/2.1) -- the fact is, that larger apertures result in lenses that are more expensive, exhibit more distortion, and are dimensionally obtrusive.

Olympus did make an OM 21mm f/2 back in the 1980s that was astonishingly compact (250g/44mm length vs. Zeiss Distagon 21mm f/2.8 @ 550g/90.5mm), but the Zuiko goes for over $1400 on eBay -- if you can find it.

At that price, I'd go for the Zeiss ZM Biogon 21mm f/2.8 (US$1100, used.)

In contrast, this Cosina lens ran me a mere US$420 new.

It should be noted, that Cosina makes (135 format) lenses for Zeiss under supervision: it follows then, that if Minolta Rokkor lenses are referred to as "Baby Leicas", then Cosina-Voigtlander lenses may be referred to as "Baby Zeiss'."

Ok -- this lens is a symmetrical rangefinder design, with a Rear Focusing Node so close to the image-forming surface -- and thus, the angle of incidence at the sides and in the corners is so acute -- that Radial Blur, resulting in smearing and color-fringing in the corners, is inevitable.

(for further reading, see:) www.versacorp.com/vlink/jcart/radblr12.htm

Color-fringing is moot with monochrome -- but, that said, if you're pixel-peeping in the corners, the subject and composition cannot be compelling enough to hold the viewer's attention.

It astounds me, how some "Full Frame" zombies will lavish praise on a particular lens' corner-to-corner sharpness -- and, then show images which they've added a vignette in Lightroom.

So, how does it perform?

Well, not as good as my Hasselblad 500C/M w/Zeiss Planar 80mm f/2.8 T* -- but, not too shabby.

(Galen Rowell, I'm not -- but, links to examples below.)

My daughter often likes to get me to throw cute rabbit and guinea pig photos at you guys, hoping for a home, but she also stops in to see the cats a lot of the time.

Today we wanted to bring your attention to two older boys looking for a home =)

Up there is Sunny, one of the prettiest cats you'll ever see. He's seven years old, which means most people overlook him.

this is Bucky-isn't he the cutest?

I pet him for a loong time-he's adoptable!

Today, 22.01.2008, maybe, the biggest demonstration ever in Germany took place. People are protesting due to the closure of Nokia plant in Bochum. The plant is expected to close down in June this year by the latest. Then about 4000 people end up on the street. The production as earlier announced will be transferred to Romania. And this because of profit avarice and inhuman business strategy.

A lot of people which don't work at the plant have been involved in the protest to show their anger about this decision.

Toronto Animal Services' small animal room (where my daughter volunteers) is full to bursting at the moment. There are 10 rabbits who need homes, plus a guinea pig. This is especially bad because Easter (notorious for rabbit dumping in the aftermath) is next weekend! So we're assaulting you with cuteness.

Fred & George (above) have been at the shelter for SIX MONTHS. The poor brothers were abandoned in an apartment when their owners moved out. They are super-friendly and cuddly and are getting tired of being at the shelter.

This handsome boy is Lupe, and he's currently at the Humane Society of Missouri. He's a Pug - Shar Pei mix.

His back is only about mid-shin high, but he has a big dog personality in a little body. He has white fur with tan freckles all over his back, and the fur on his wrinkly face is like velvet. He loves to check himself out in the mirrored windows around our complex, and see how nice he looks.

Please consider allowing Lupe into your home. He's a sweet boy, and he'd be so happy with a forever home and family, and lots of love.

Please contact the shelter directly for availability, hours, etc. I'm just a volunteer.

Aug 8: Lupe got adopted today!! Woohoo! This sweet boy was rescued from a puppy mill, so even though he's an adult, he's never known any home, or any love except from the volunteers. We're all SO excited for Lupito to finally have a family and a home! (I know his new mom thought I was a crackhead for asking, but I got a picture of them together and sent it to our newsgroup, and everyone went completely bananas!)

Locandina by Angelo Pezzolla

This gorgeous girl is Missi. She's an American Bulldog - Labrador Retriever mix. She's not that tall, only a bit over knee-high on me, but she's an awesome little girl. She has lots of energy, and loves long walks, and I think she'd make a great running companion. She always stares longingly at the runners going by, and I tell her she'll be out there with one of them, one day.

She has beautiful, soulful eyes, and the loveliest freckles on her ears -- and her personality is just as pretty as her face. Like many bulldogs, she loves to be close to you, and give lots of kisses.

She'd do great with someone who knows about "power breeds" (as we call them), but I think she'd be just fine with anyone who's committed to giving her plenty of exercise to burn off her energy, and enforcing good manners. I take her for about a 2/3 mile walk on Saturday mornings and she does beautifully. Then we sit in the grass and snuggle.

Please consider taking Missi into your home and your life. She has so much love to give.

Missi is currently at the Humane Society of Missouri. Please call for availability and hours, and go meet her! She'll steal your heart.

10/17/09: Finally! I was out of town last weekend, when Missi disappeared from the website. She had been getting so depressed (some dogs really don't do well in shelters, no matter how much they're loved) that I was a little afraid to ask what happened to her. She got adopted! By a gay couple! I know it's rotten to stereotype, but gay couples seem to make the best dog parents. I'm so excited for her, going places and meeting people and out of the shelter! Yay, Missi! I love you, sweet girl!

This is Erie! He's the sweetest little Shar Pei, at the Humane Society of Missouri, with a wrinkly soft face and lots of kisses and snuggles to give.

Erie's a little guy, his back's about mid-shin high, but he's solidly built. He's good at walking on a leash, but prefers to walk beside or behind you, so he can make sure you're still with him. He loves to be petted -- and when you sit down, as you can see, he wants to cuddle right up to you.

He's missing the foot on his back left leg, but he's a great little trooper, and never lets it bother him. He walks and runs and plays great without it -- but we all think he deserves extra love anyway.

Please consider giving Erie a place in your home. He'll make sure you never regret it.

This loveable guy is Jackson. He's a lab/chow mix, and he's been in the "system" for a while, but just moved out to our location recently. His old picture wasn't doing him any favors, so I took some new ones that really show his incredible personality.

He's not very big, about knee-height, but he's pretty stocky, and he's a total lovebug. He's always smiling, and loves to lay on his back and have his tummy scratched, while gazing at you in complete adoration. His profile says that he's seven years old, but he doesn't have a single grey hair.

Now that I know him, I completely don't understand why he hasn't been adopted. He is such a great boy. He's very gentle and silly and cuddly, and he really has a gorgeous, sweet face. Please stop by and meet him, and let him prove how much love he can give you.

Jackson's official HSMO page, with video!

Jackson is currently at the Humane Society of Missouri. Please call for hours and availability.

Update: 11/1/09 - Jackson was adopted last week. When I was at the shelter yesterday, there was a nice photo of him with his new family. I don't know anything more than that, but Hooray, Jackson!!

This beautiful boy is Miles, and he's currently at the Humane Society of Missouri. He's a black mouth cur mix, and while he looks pretty tough, he's actually surprisingly sweet, gentle, and friendly. He's a darling boy, and he's looking for a good forever home where he can finally get the love he deserves.

Miles's official HSMO page

Please contact the shelter directly for availability, hours, etc. I'm just a volunteer.

Update: Miles got adopted yesterday! (6/20) Hooray!
