Another one of the absolutely gorgeous green-socks peacock beetles (Elaphrus riparius) which run around (seriously running around) on the sand banks in the Mjällådalen nature reserve near Härnösand Sweden.

I hear quite often that wasps and yellowjackets are useless because they don't pollinate flowers.
Regardless of the fact that animals don't have to serve a purpose to be good, wasps are actually extremely useful in the garden as they keep he population of caterpillars and similar in check AND pollinate. This saxon wasp (Dolichovespula saxonica) certainy is fuzzy enough to pick up some pollen when visiting the inflorescence on a purple angelica (Angelica gigas).

This tiny beauty on the flower of a house leek (Sempervivum tectorum) is most likely a female long hoverfly (Sphaerophoria scripta) as it is the most common of the Sphaerophoria species - but this could be one of the others as well so ID will have to stop at it being a globetail (Sphaerophoria sp.).
I found her there while looking for carder bees and discovered that she wasn't scared by the camera at all.
I could try loads of settings and levels of magnification and flash power and what not and she stayed on the flower.
This is a composite (or focus stack) made from two shots with different parts of the fly in focus. It moved slightly in-between shots so I had to use Photoshop to combine them.
After getting a bunch of shots, I stood up - but this made her abandon the flower and begin circling my head instead!
Her wings produced a rather high-pitched, almost mosquito-like, sound and she stayed around me while I walked about five meters to a different flower in the garden. By now I was quite amused by her behaviour and held out my hand and lo and behold, she landed on it - and I got a shot of her there as well (coming later).

Cuckoo wasps, also known as emerald wasps are brilliantly beautiful little explosions of colour - which of course make them excellent subjects to photograph. What isn't as excellent is that they are not much about staying still, but instead seem to be nearly constantly on the move.
This one however was the exception to the rule. I spotted it on the outside of my mother-in-law's greenhouse and marvelled at it staying still long enough for me to get several promising shots. And after that I decided to try and get it onto my fingertip - which also worked! Once there I could turn it around and find a couple of more angles.
But it still didn't leave so I popped up my mobile and took a couple of shots with that camera just because. And then I walked to the other side of the garden with it on my hand and showed it to my wife describing why it was cool pretty much the same way as I have done above here.
This particular species is one of the very similar ones in what is known as the Chrysis ignita complex. The ever helpful expert Alexander Berg slightly leans towards Chrysis solida so that's what I am thinking as well.

On a small logging road, me and Daniel (my son) found two of these wood tiger beetles (Cicindela sylvatica), also known as the heath tiger beetle.
They really aren't fans of having their portrait taken so getting my shots meant we had to combine some serious ninja sneaking and some excellent spotting and running by Daniel when they took off and flew five meters and landed somewhere else on the road.
These beetles are predators and hunt by running faster than most other bugs and grabbing their prey with those large mandibles.
On top of the impressive mandibles and the very fuzzy legs, I also look like they are riddled with RGB lighting like they are the beetle equivalent of a gaming PC.
