The second day of our tour was dominated by lagoons of colours as varied as white, blue and red. Our day ended with a visit to the
Laguna Colorodes, the red lagoon. The algae in the water here gave the lagoon its red colour - which the Andean and the Chilean flamingoes we saw preferred.

Pueblo Fanstasmo translates to ghost town. This once flourishing mining town is now deserted. Decades ago, every single resident of this village died. It was the first afternoon of our Salar de Uyuni tour and we had gained almost 1000 meters in altitude. Everyone was feeling the effect of high altitude walking through this ghost town.
**ENGLISH**
Uyuni primarily serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the world's largest salt flats, the nearby Uyuni salt flat. Each year the city receives approximately 60,000[citation needed] visitors from around the globe. The city also acts as a gateway for commerce and traffic crossing into and out of Bolivia from and to Chile, and there is a customs and immigration post downtown. Agriculture in the area is generally limited to quinoa, llamas, and sheep.
Founded in 1890 as a trading post, the city has a population of 29,672 (2012 official census). The town has an extensive street-market. It lies at the edge of an extensive plain at an elevation of 3,700 m (12,139 ft) above sea level, with more mountainous country to the east.
**NEDERLANDS**

We spent the night close to the salar to get there very early in the morning to be able to walk and take pictures before sunrise. The landscape and the light were even more incredible that I had imagined.
Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat at 10,582 square kilometers. It is located in the Potosi and Oruro departments in southwest Bolivia, near the crest of the Andes, and is elevated 3,656 meters above the mean sea level.

Salt hotel “Playa Blanca” and Island of the Flags is a must stop on all tours and when traveling to the Uyuni Salt Flats.
Nowadays the hotel is disabled due to the lack of water treatment, but it works as a museum.
Next to the hotel is an island formed by hundreds of flags of different countries of the world. The truth has no historical value, it is just a very cute and photogenic place. Find your flag!*

At the end of the three day 4WD tour that goes across the Salar de Uyuni, then up volcanic valleys with flamingo lakes, you end up at the Chile border. From there it's a one hour bus to San Pedro de Atacama.
I decided not to go on to Chile, but do the seven or so hours back to Uyuni, so see a lot of it all again...
