Design und Navigation: Das Modell war das erste in voller Größe, das das innovative Click Wheel vom iPod mini übernahm, bei dem die Steuerelemente (Menü, Wiedergabe/Pause, Zurück, Weiter) in das berührungsempfindliche Scrollrad integriert waren.

Display: Das ursprüngliche Modell (wie abgebildet) verfügte über ein monochromatisches Graustufen-LCD mit blauer Hintergrundbeleuchtung. Eine spätere Premium-Version, der iPod photo, hatte ein Farbdisplay.

Speicher: Er war ursprünglich mit einer Festplatte in 20 GB und 40 GB Speicherkapazitäten erhältlich.

Konnektivität und Akku: Der iPod 4G war der erste, der neben FireWire auch über USB 2.0 aufgeladen werden konnte. Die Akkulaufzeit war im Vergleich zu den Vorgängern deutlich verbessert und ermöglichte bis zu 12 Stunden Musikwiedergabe.

Zubehör: Die 40-GB-Version wurde mit einer Dockingstation geliefert, die 20-GB-Version nicht.
