All that is left of the historic Bowman Hotel is the Grand Avenue façade. A new senior living facility and community center arise behind and along side. Work by Poster Frost of Tucson, a great story of preservation and adaptive reuse.

Part of the Modern Tucson 2013 Home Tour was this new re-development on the Westside of Tucson. This house is comprised of four rooms distributed around a courtyard to optimize natural light and ventilation on a tight urban infill site. The south façade is structural adobe, employing thermal mass to modulate interior comfort. A steel brise-soliel shades southern glass during the warm months but allows direct solar gain in the winter. Exposed masonry, steel, and concrete finishes require little long term maintenance, and custom steel elements add visual interest to the simple palette of materials and colors.

The key note lecture to kick off the week was held at the Leo Rich Theater in the Tucson Civic Center Complex. The talk was concerning the legacy of Urban Renewal, and questioning the various rationales for its preservation. A 575 seat, fan theater, with a comfortable scale, an elegant lobby (with dramatic lighting through lights and clerestories), and cozy theatrics. The exterior exhibit brutalism and monumentality, composed of smooth poured-in place concrete and rough concrete block. The project was a joint venture between Tucson firms in 1971: Cain Nelson Wares & Cook, and Friedman Jobusch.
