Urban Legends The Hague through a Lens
The Underground is a free monthly paper written in English which was born from the desire to connect the international yet local community of The Hague to the ‘Hagenaren’ and their way of life in order to make them feel at home. It is a community paper, written and read by locals, whether they are Dutch or non-Dutch.
They thought it was a good idea to write a story about me and suddenly I am an urban legend...;-)

Can you balance and Egg on the Equinox?
Eggs in the balance
The egg being the most literal and obvious of all fertility symbols, ancient eggish customs survive not only in the form of egg rolling and Easter eggs, but also in the quaint superstitious belief, most often attributed to the Chinese, that you can stand a raw egg on end during the equinox. Apparently this derives from the notion that, due to the sun's equidistant position between the poles of the earth on the first day of spring, special gravitational forces apply.
For skeptics, the first objection that comes to mind is that there's another equinox on the first day of autumn — why does no one speak of balancing eggs on end in September? Secondly, while it's true that on both equinoxes the earth's axis is perpendicular to the sun so day and night are of equal length, there's no scientific reason to suppose that such an alignment has any effect on gravitational forces here on earth. Thirdly, if the equinox can cause this curious anomaly, why aren't there others? Why don't we hear talk of being able to stand broomsticks, pencils, lollipops, or toothpicks on end?
THE ANSWER - YOU CAN BALANCE AN EGG ON END, EVERY DAY, ALL YEAR LONG! But the Chinese created this custom to represent the idea of a rebirth and renewal.

The cobblestone streets of Brussels hold the quiet charm of a city that breathes history. Every corner reveals a piece of the past, with buildings that have witnessed centuries of change but remain as pillars of tradition and culture. Walking through these streets is like stepping into a time where architecture speaks, and the ground tells stories of old markets, artists, and gatherings that shaped Belgian identity.
Brussels, known for its blend of French and Flemish influences, preserves this essence in its alleys and hidden squares. The glow of cobblestones after a rainy night or the soft sound of footsteps echoing at dusk creates a unique atmosphere – melancholic yet warm.
These streets are not just pathways; they are living memories intertwined with the present. In Brussels, even the smallest alleyway seems to whisper that the past is never as far away as it seems.

i love this urban legend.
although the coke and mentos eruption is a well known phenomenon
1. nobody has ever died for having mentos mints and coke together and
2. i suspect that basically any food, material or little animal dropped in coke might produce the same reaction. but i'm too lazy to set up a scientific experiment

www.snopes.com/autos/techno/icecream.asp
I remember hearing this one a ton as a child - that drivers eating Vanilla Ice Cream would have stalled cars. We had a family friend growing up who's dad would always order chocolate because he said he didn't want to have to push the car home. Then he'd just laugh because I think we all knew it was pretty ridiculous. Looking back, I'm pretty sure he just really liked chocolate and was making fun of all of us for believing the thing. We were gullible children.
Additionally, I really really like ice cream. Just in case you didn't know. Silly how ice cream is one of the many things that makes me very happily divorced. While married, I wasn't allowed to buy ice cream because I didn't "eat it fast enough". Apparently, leaving ice cream in the freezer to be, well, frozen, for too long was UNACCEPTABLE. One of the many "not allowed"s that makes me happy to be single.
Because a world without ice cream is just ALL KINDS OF WRONG.

This is a brazilian Urban Legend but I did find an equivalent:
In contemporary Western folklore, Bloody Mary is a ghost or witch said to appear when her name is called three times (or sometimes more, depending upon the version of the story), often as part of a game at slumber parties.
Other very similar tales use different names for the character including Mary Worth, Mary Worthington and Hell Mary.

Malinda Rhoton
Faithful member of
Magic Circle No. 81
Died 27 June 1914
To date we have uncovered the following historical information.
According to the 1880 US Federal Census Malinda Rhoton was born about 1871. The 1870 U.S. Federal Census indicates the Father of Malinda Rhoton to be William Rhoton who was born in Virginia in 1848 and died sometime before 1880. Her Mother, Catherine "Kate" Wagner was born about 1849 in Tennessee. Malinda was not an only child she had a brother, Marion and two sisters Mary and Anna who also lived in Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee.
In the year 1914 Malinda Rhoton died and was buried, at that time the cemetery was referred to as “the Tullahoma Colored Cemetery” in Coffee Co., Tennessee. This historic cemetery is also known as the Citizens Cemetery, Pearson Cemetery, Camp Peay Cemetery and Camp Forrest Cemetery. The current sign at the front of the cemetery identifies it as “The Citizens Cemetery”. Malinda’s grave marker depicts a curious symbol on the top depicting a lion and letters RCF. After research we found that the ‘RCF’ was the abbreviation for The Royal Circle of Friends. The Royal Circle of Friends supplied a distinctive headstone for its members which featured a lion sitting atop a triangle with the letters RCF in the points of the triangle.
The Royal Circle of Friends (RFC) also known as The Supreme Royal Circle of Friends of the World was an African-American fraternal organization founded in 1909 in Arkansas. The organization supplied insurance and also offered a monument benefit rider that provided for the purchase of grave markers to the African-American population but was also dedicated to the moral, physical, social, and economic welfare of the members of its circles (local groups were called circles). In RCF both men and women were equal members. From inception, the RCF grew rapidly across the South and soon spread across the country. The founding Supreme President of the Supreme Royal Circle of Friends of the World was Dr. Richard A. Williams who held that position until 1944. At the age of nineteen, Richard A. Williams enrolled in Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, after that Dr. Williams practiced medicine in Knoxville, Tennessee and later moved to Arkansas.
The Citizen's Cemetery established in the 1870's was originally land which belonged to Mary Bobo. Tullahoma citizens, Henry Person, Joe Landers, Aron Hale, John Clendenon and Will Martin agreed to purchase the property from Mrs. Bobo as an cemetery for African American’s. Tragically, in 1901 these folks were unable to pay the balance due and asked the City for assistance. The City agreed to help under the condition that the land be deeded to the city and according to internet resources it would be dedicated as a burial place for the African American Community. From research it was also found that this burial ground was not only used as an African American Cemetery but over time has also been used as the Camp Peay Cemetery, the Camp Forrest Cemetery and for the burial of refugees from the 1937 Ohio and Mississippi Rivers floods. Unfortunately many of the graves in this cemetery have been removed, desecrated and/or badly vandalized over the years including the grave of Malinda Rhoton.

Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there.
Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.
Dihydrogen monoxide:
· is also known as hydroxl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
· contributes to the "greenhouse effect."
· may cause severe burns.
· contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
· accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
· may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
· has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.
Contamination is reaching epidemic proportions!
Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage in the midwest, and recently California.
Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
· as an industrial solvent and coolant.
· in nuclear power plants.
· in the production of styrofoam.
· as a fire retardant.
· in many forms of cruel animal research.
· in the distribution of pesticides.
· as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.
Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!
The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

The legend of the Morbach Monster:
On a foggy autumn full moon night in 1988:
A small group of American Soldiers from the Hahn Air Base,
have made their way to their guard post at the Morbach / Wenigerath Ammunition Storage Area in the forests of the Hunsrück mountain range.
In that night, sensors on the fence surrounding the ammunition depot set off an alarm siren.
When the guards reached the site, they saw an large wolf-like figure standing on two legs.
The guards shouted and the wolf-like creature jumped over the 3 meter tall fence.
The soldiers attempted to pursue the intruder but their military dogs absolutely refused and the creature disappeared into the darkness.
When reinforcements arrived on the scene, they found a human corpse, still wearing the remains of a Nazi Luftwaffe uniform in the surrounding woods.
The limbs were twisted at impossible angles and the flesh was torn apart by animals claws.
But Werwolf tales had been already circulating for a long time among the locals.
They have their origin in the legend of Thomas Johannes Baptist Schwytzer, an deserter from Napoleon’s Army who roamed this countryside while fleeing to his homeland in Alsace.
One day he was killed by angry villagers who believed circulating rumors about his wolf-like nature.
They constructed a shrine with candles at the spot where they buried the alleged werwolf. According to legend if the candle ever went out, the Werwolf would return.
On the feral night in 1988, one of the US soldiers noticed that the candle had gone out.
Since then, this urban legend has been circulating among the locals and US soldiers stationed there and even gave the American Football club "Morbach Monsters" its name.
The full moon nights in autumn 1988 were:

At some point in the late 80s or early 90s someone (I forget who now) told me about a small band of elves who lived alongside humans near Anaheim. They all looked human enough, the main differentiator being their silver eyes and auburn hair. It seemed like a family of brothers and sisters but they all worked as mechanics for race tracks or raced cars themselves. Everyone thought they were human.
