Sometimes, I think to myself that I'd be far more human if I were just a robot. Maybe that's not so strange, after all.

Charleston's iconic upgrade, the Arthur Ravenel Bridge constructed in 2005. It replaced 2 older bridges constructed in 1929 and 1966. The 1929 Bridge rated a 4 on a scale of 100,while the newer bridge was rated "imminently deficient". Senator Arthur Ravenal was instrumental in getting the Federal funding for this beauty...

CP 5936 and 6258 creep out across the Kennebec at Moosehead, ME with a rail train in tow. The train had taken the siding to allow CP 250-5 to pass. Afterwards, they would pull beyond the road for Brookfield Energy, and would proceed to drop the last 8 or so strands of rail.

An image originally uploaded to Flickr in early 2011 (a few days after I joined) now rescanned / processed to yield a better result, including correcting the overly warm colour cast. Well, I figured it deserved a bit of TLC for its 50th Anniversary! The original version has been deleted.
The shot, taken in the summer of 1974, captures the eastern end of Healey Mills Marshalling Yard from the Storrs Hill Road overbridge. The yard was still a vibrant and busy operation with reasonably well-maintained tracks and a small locomotive depot (55C / HM). No surprise then that this was a well-visited spot by both local enthusiasts and those from further afield.
Having only just arrived I was pretty lucky to bag this rarity, a green livered class 40 unit 40039, heading east with an unfitted rake of empty 16T mineral wagons. Rare because there were very few class 40s still knocking around in the original British Railways green (most were now in rail-blue), but also because 40039 was one of the first members of the class to be withdrawn some 18 months later in January 1976. It lasted just over 16 years in service and never received the rail-blue paint job.
Strangely enough the Yard was opened as recently as 1963 but, with the closure of the Yorkshire collieries and a move to trainload rather than wagonload traffic, sorting work would come to an end in 1985. The slow death of other activity around the yard, including locomotive maintenance, finally saw some of the tracks removed and others abandoned to the encroachment of nature. In the last few years it has been a somewhat surreal experience to see the still-glowing ground signals shining amongst the trees and shrubbery guarding rusted and unusable tracks that hadn't seen any activity for years.
On a positive note however, in recent months the area has been gradually 'de-forested' and tracks once again exposed in readiness for lifting and partial replacement. Apparently the Yard might see some life again, this time as a train-holding facility for the Transpennine Route Upgrade project.

SOO 2201-A and 738 thunder upgrade through the rain and fall color on September 24, 1977. Train 911 is west of Engadine nearing Swift with 84 cars. Both units have a pretty good fade job going on with there red paint and while not common a number of SOO units exhibited fading red paint in the late 70's-early 80's.
Despite these two birds being common and on some artifal structure (bird feeder) they are nice subjects to practice on with my new Z6iii and NIKKOR 180-600! Before the warblers and vireos show back up it will be helpful to figure out the settings and custom button layout for a fast and accurate setup.(no post processing used in either photo) Nikon z6iii 11/27/24 Northern cardinal in backyard.

KCS 3967 and an adopted former BNSF, now KCS D9W carry a 3GPS loaded ballast train southbound on the north side of Le Claire, IA, skirting along the western bank of the Mississippi River. This ballast train could've been going to any number of siding projects, but if I had to guess, I'd wager they were heading to the brand-new Washington siding. I think they'd started construction on that by this time, right? Taken on the CP Davenport Subdivision on 3/24/23.
Working steadily northbound on the LCL sub is a Q248 emerging from a dense fog on its way to Sparta and points north.
Taking advantage of the rotten, discarded railroad tie pile at the "Worm Farm" on Whitewaters westside to document a five headed Saturday T004 with nothing but painted power. The three year project to replace the aging jointed rail along the Waukesha sub was only 1/3 complete, and 40's still ruled the roost. Just another one of those it'll be around forever kinda scenes. For those heritage nuts like me, former MoPac, DRGW, Rock Island, Northwestern, and NdeM motors fill out this lash
The old pedestrian bridge was torn down and the completion of the new pedestrian bridge across the Arkansas River is just about complete, along with the white water rapids....not this summer but by winter.
KCS 3963 and 4461 lead a 3GPS (I think?) northbound past Park Drive in Camanche, IA. CPKC was just under two weeks away from being officially formed when this photo was captured. Taken on 4/1/23 on the CP Davenport Subdivision.
