Beautiful male Blue-wing Teal duck in full display plumage slowly maneuvering its way through a tangle of cattail stalks to open water.

Eastern Phoebe carrying a beak load of soft moss to line its nest and make it a more comfortable place to raise its brood.

I went to get a booster shot on a grayish December morning. Everybody present was of course wearing a mask. While waiting in line I caught the scene reflected on a silvery surface.

Body of a dead Bumblebee impaled on the spine of a Teasel flower-head.

Not supposed to happen. Teasel spines present a very real danger to butterflies and other insects, but this is a first for me..

Just playing around trying to do something for Halloween. Don’t know if this will be the final version. But I am pretty happy with it.

Finally, the temps feel like Spring as 2016's first Honey Bee (for me) visits an awakening Grecian Wildflower in my garden.

The Great Salt Lake has no tides, but the water does shift and move from the wind. In most of the places I am shooting, the water is paper-thin to knee-deep. The shallowest parts can cover great distances, and small winds will push the water.

Here the "tide is in," and you can see previous dry areas where dirt bikes have ridden are now underwater.

Breeds in Alaska and most spend their winters south of the equator. A few are locally common on Oahu where this bird was photographed. The cinnamon colored-rump distinguishes it from the very similar looking Whimbrel.

Both of these taken Sunday morning. I was there to shoot my "classic black and gold" photos, but ended up seeing a pretty awesome sunrise, too.

In this version, the sky has formed some colors but isn't yet bright enough to wash out the city lights. The city lights are still very vibrant and reflect brightly against the dark river. The clouds frame the buildings perfectly.

Final photo to follow later today...

Hawaii

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are home to 99.7% of the population. The oldest living bird is thought to be a female Laysan Albatross at 70+ years old. Her name is Wisdom.

ARR 3002 pops out of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel and into Whittier, gateway to Prince William Sound. The tunnel is a shared road/rail tunnel. you can see vehicles lined up to the right that will traverse the tunnel after the freight. There is a basic time schedule, vehicles travel into Whittier on the hour, out of Whittier on the half hour and trains use 20 minutes and 50 minutes past the hour to traverse in either direction.

Red-shouldered Hawk

The Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) is a medium-sized hawk. Its breeding range spans eastern North America and along the coast of California and northern to northeastern-central Mexico. Red-shouldered Hawks are permanent residents throughout most of their range, though northern birds do migrate, mostly to central Mexico. The main conservation threat to the widespread species is deforestation.
