Googling for ideas we found out that yoga sequences are among the things that cannot be copyrighted. I hope it's obvious that I was going for a "tabbed" look like you see as marker tabs sometimes in big books. What's NOT obvious is that I actually stuck all of these tiles at the "right" place for that. The 'A' is stuck in the book at the beginning of the As, the 'B' at the Bs, and so on.
"But wait", you'll protest, "I can see the As are already there on the page 37 you have open!" Yes, but you see, this phone book has two completely different alphabetical sections (and actually three sections that are numbered starting from page 1).

Some other ideas I looked at before deciding on what I did. My first thought was the one at the top here. I like the way the word came out to be just a tad longer than the span of the book. "Uncopyrightable is longer than the phone book!"

These are the inscriptions on the back of the original class portrait in my collection. It seems that each of the students and staff of the class signed their name, then wrote their rank, unit, and station. The units represented include the 5th Black Watch, 5th Suffolks, 5th, 6th and 7th Essex Regt, and several units of the Royal Field Artillery.

I am not a lawyer, but I believe this document is in the public domain in the USA (and many other places) as work that lacks the necessary originality to qualify for copyright.
Per Circular 33 of the United States Copyright Office: "To be copyrightable, a work must qualify as an original work of authorship, meaning that it must have been created independently and contain a sufficient amount of creativity. " It seems clear that each man was ordered to write their name, rank, unit and station - so the words they wrote were not "created independently" - they wrote as directed. Even if it were their idea, writing out one's name, rank, unit and station does not strike me as a creative act - Circular 33 goes on to say: "Longer phrases that are very conventional or factual may also be unprotectable. For example, consider the following sentence: Marie Curie was born on November 7, 1867. This sentence is one of the only ways of expressing this information in English. Thus, it is likely uncopyrightable due to the merger doctrine." In addition to lacking originality, many, perhaps most, of these men, died over 70 years ago - during World War I, for example, which would mean any copyright they had has lapsed. Any rights I may have inadvertently acquired by scanning it, I donate to the public domain under a CC0 license.

Note that the two men sitting in front of the heliographs in the postcard photo are relocated to standing at the ends of the lowest standing row in the formal version.
After accounting for the repositioning, most of the names on the two versions seem to match, yet are discrepancies, and I place more credence on the formal version, since it appears that each person filled in their own information there. Also, the postcard version has 9 names for the 2nd row down vs. 10 figures on that photo, and six names on the bottom row vs. six figures on in the photo.
However, I think this version adds value because it provides added clues to some of the surnames that are hard to make out in the formal list, and in particular, provides a surname for the major in charge, who only stamped his position on the formal photo.
While I am not a lawyer, I believe this list to be in the public domain in the USA as lacking the originality to qualify for copyright protection. It is a simple list of surnames arranged in the pattern of the figures in the front.
