Another feature of Woy Woy is the large pelican colony that calls it home. Hundreds of pelicans live on a small sandbar island in the middle of Brisbane Water, an impressive sight even from a distance.
There’s a pleasant little Lions Park on the waterfront - Lions as in the community organisation, not the kings of the jungle. I don’t think those sorts of lions and children’s playgrounds belong in the same sentence!
But back to the pelicans.
At the park there’s a small fish cleaning station for local fishermen, and some of the smarter, or lazier, pelicans have worked out that this is the place to be. A handful of them were hanging around on this particular day, patiently waiting for scraps. They’re very used to people, so you can get quite close.
This is my friend Doris. There’s no reliable way to tell a female pelican from a male just by looking, but she felt like a Doris - calm, unbothered, and living her best pelican life. It seemed to fit the bill. 😉

While poolside on the Big Island, I spotted this Cutie indulging in a first-rate bath right at the water's edge.
What blew me away was his complete lack of concern for the surrounding crowd—he was utterly unbothered by the chorus of splashers and the sea of sun-crisped tourists floating past with their colorful, rum-infused umbrella drinks.
He just carried on with his afternoon grooming like he owned the place. It appears cocktails, resort pools, and feathered friends can peacefully coexist after all!

This guy absolutely stole the show for me today at Irvine Nature Center. While not uncommon by any means, Hoodeds aren’t a species I get to see everyday, so when the short boisterous warble of the male rang out in the forest I was really excited. A species of the understory, they’re quite comfortable foraging at eye level and lower, although this can mean that they’re often hard to see, despite boasting strikingly yellow cheeks and underparts which contrast nicely with the olive back and, of course, the black hood. It was a pleasure to spend a couple hours with this bird, who was completely unbothered by my presence and was happy to sing and forage the morning away while I observed in awe.
Two wildflowers stand shoulder to shoulder in a blur of green, looking like they just overheard something stupid and are politely deciding who’s going to respond first. Their soft lavender petals and bright yellow centers sell “gentle,” but the posture is pure attitude upright, composed, and entirely unbothered by the chaos beyond the frame. The unopened buds nearby feel like backup singers waiting for their cue. It’s a portrait of quiet resilience: fragile in appearance, stubborn in reality, blooming anyway and looking good while they do it.

Wikepedia states "the Mua or Red jungle fowl were brought to Kauai by the Polynesians as a source of food, thriving on an island where they have no real predators. Most locals agree that wild chickens proliferated after Hurricane Iniki ripped across Kauai in 1992, destroying chicken coops and releasing domesticated hens, and well as roosters being bred for cockfighting. " I was simply delighted when I saw these gorgeous animals sauntering by...seemingly unbothered by other humans.

I went to my favorite coastal wetlands hoping for Black Skimmers. I stayed till sundown. No skimmers, not much of anything really. But I did spot a Reddish Egret finally as I hiked back to the car. Ran me up and down the inner bay as it displayed its stylish fishing technique. It was getting dark, really, so I moved on. Suddenly I see the coyote loping along the shoreline, up and over the inner bank, then down into the inner bay where it crossed to the far side. Swam a little even. Not the greatest photo, but I wanted to tell the story. First, I've never seen a coyote there in my many visits over the years, though I know others have. Nor have I ever seen one swim anywhere. Second, the Great Blue Heron in the background was completely unbothered by the coyote presence, though all the little shorebirds I couldn't even see suddenly started broadcasting warning calls. That was crazy. Coyote continued on its mission to the far side, and calm returned to the wetlands. And I finished my walk back to the car in wonder.

Small, stocky owl with large head and no neck. Pointed ear tufts are often raised. Varies in color from gray to bright rufous (reddish-brown). Intricate pattern is perfect for camouflage against tree bark. Yellow eyes. Active at night when they prey on small birds and mammals. More often heard than seen; listen for its descending whinny and longer trill. Roosts and nests in cavities, including nest boxes. Found in a variety of habitats with trees, particularly near water. We've been lucky with owls recently. This Screech-Owl has returned to a favourite day roost and was enjoying the warm sun on a cool autumn day. Surprisingly unbothered by the birders, photographers and others that peered through the branches, he just dozed in the sun.
