It’s a Great Time To Be a UX Designer

Jared Spool

After years of wishing we’d be recognized and appreciated for the value we bring, we designers are now highly sought after. The demand for great design has never been higher! Yet, while we’re presented with more opportunities than ever, we also face increased challenges. Mobile design requires us to rethink how we design for screens and interaction. Agile methodology forces us to critically reevaluate best processes and techniques. Learn how we can deliver world-changing designs while our own world is dramatically shifting under our feet.

The iTunes Store now features a Daily Show app. When you click to purchase it, the store tells you it doesn't exist/isn't available under this name.

Apparently, Apple or MTV Networks has withdrawn the app -- and the news never made it to the database. How is this possible?

The error message indicates that the app "may be available" with a different price or "elsewhere on the store." Neither of these possibilities turns out to be true.

Imagine a shoe store with special shoes highlighted in the window. When you try to buy them, the clerk says you can't, but they "may be available" elsewhere in the store for a different price.

Somewhere, Steve Krug is quietly weeping.

A mismatch between official label for major train stations, which are prefixed with a generic 'London ', the unique name which you are searching for, like 'Blackfriars', and mental models for nomenclature therein.

This system requires 7+ touch interactions ('LONDON ') before you can start to narrow the search to the station which you need.

The system doesn't support nuance in search lookup. For example: 'BLACKFRIARS' is an illegal query.

However, the dynamic reduction in available characters in the keyboard is super interesting and helpful. Especially in a potentially stressful, potentially error-prone, context.

...rather than a sane taxonomic process like genre, author or an indexing system. 😅

Very clever and responsible design to protect vulnerable people from ongoing domestic violence/abuse and especially the unintended consequences of design.

My team and I recently developed a web app for the National Science Foundation for their internal communications tool called NSF Weekly Wire. Essentially, program/division directors can login and create content (articles, images, videos, events, etc.) that will be pushed out internally to the foundation once a week in an email newsletter.

These screenshots represent a concept I mocked up where the NSF Weekly Wire was an iPad 'news' type app. In this model, the user can more actively engage w/the content - as opposed to reading a static newsletter and every link they click takes them out of the branded experience. These are preliminary mockups, based on existing mobile UI patterns, etc. Nothing groundbreaking but fun to work on nonetheless.

Thanks for looking everyone, I hope you enjoy.

Special thanks to Chris Wallace for his excellent iPad template.

Literal, simple and accessible mapping of the possible actions a user can take with fan/light controls.

This mockup (as well as v01) was one of many I created from the ground up while working for 24hr. Diner on a project I am unable to discuss publicly. (Note: Items have been blurred to retain the intelectual property integrity of the project.)

Creative interaction model solutions were of my design as was the look and feel.

Please feel free to contact me privately for more information. If you wish to see the full unadulterated mockups, I would be happy to do so in person.
