Dame Cleo Laine, one of the greatest jazz singers of all time, has died at the age of 97.
Her vocal range was truly extraordinary, almost unbelievable, covering four octaves. The Sunday Times newspaper described her as ‘quite simply the best singer in the world’ – a judgement that aficionados and music critics alike agreed was spot on.
In my television days, I was once fortunate enough to produce a music programme featuring Cleo and her music collaborator and husband, Sir John Dankworth. That was back in 1980 in Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, where they were giving a weekend-long masterclass – free of charge – to music students, as they did every year.
We recorded the programme, for Thames Television and the ITV network, over two days. Cleo and John (who died in 2010) were a pleasure to work with: informal, unpretentious, cooperative and easy-going – but their professionalism and their music were quite simply unmatched.
This old black and white photograph of Cleo and me, during a break in filming, brings back countless happy memories. The order of the day, as you can see here, was 'dress casual/informal".
I took a walk the other day along Broadway between 42nd Street and 60th Street and happened to pass the building where they tape the Late Show with David Letterman. It's some deal to watch the street outside the building before a tapping of the program. A large crowd gathers and guards are posted while a big jolly fellow tells jokes and works them up getting them ready for the program. He tells them how important it is to laugh at the jokes, to clap and have a jolly good and make a lot of noise while watching the show. This looked like a show before the show!!
Here in the form of adapted short stories are ten Gunsmoke programs. Gunsmoke was a western drama series on American television from 1955 to 1975, which was frequently based on actual incidents from western history. The series starred James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon who was in charge of Dodge City, Kansas, a town in the wild west where people often had no respect for the law. Helping to keep the Marshal grounded were Milburn Stone as Doc Adams, Amanda Blake as saloon proprietor Miss Kitty Russell, and Dennis Weaver as Dillon's assistant Chester Goode.
Beth Chapman and her husband, "Dog" Chapman took part in a March of Dimes event in downtown Honolulu last week to raise money to help fight the birth of premature babies. The event was successful - we helped raise over $7000. You can see her on Dog the Bounty Hunter on Tuesday nights on A&E.

“Space Patrol” was an American sci-fi adventure series set in the 30th century that was originally aimed at juvenile audiences via television, radio, and comic books. It was broadcast on ABC from March 1950 to February 1955. Went out on an errand and sort of got stuck waiting for the Hawaii 5-0 TV show crew to finish filming a scene...

My favorite character is Butler Ed, a live tortoise who loves karaoke & works for a demanding, obnoxious cat named Oom Boudewijn (Uncle Baldwin).
All the kittens, cats, ducklings, giant garden snails are real. The set is a huge cat house/doll house. Butler Ed has his quarters in a tropically converted garage out back, when it isn't rented out for a B&B. New character is a real goldfish - proprietor of a café/bar. And this season Oom Boudewijn is obsessed with a TV program featuring a psychic mussel who issues mystic wisdom from a beautifully exotic set.
This show is fabulous. ❤

I really do despise the TV program Big Brother. and refuse to watch it on principal.
I was really into it when it first came out many years ago, but found that it just took over my life and viewing habits. Its very addictive, as you need to know what happened. But then when its over after three months, you feel that your life hasn;t had any benefit for seeing it. at least with a big drama series you are taken on a journey, but i can't be bothered to watch a bunch of people that i wouldn't like in real life do silly thing.

In 1990, one of my sons won a drawing competition, with the theme of dinosaurs, and the prize was a trip to London, with one of his parents.

Len Vale-Onslow MBE, Britain's Oldest Biker.
According to the DoE Len Vale-Onslow was also Britain's oldest worker.
Photographed at Elsecar Heritage Centre Classic Bike Show 2002 age 99 years old, Len lived to be 103 years old and was the subject of BBC TV program This Is Your Life in 2002.
He was the designer and builder of SOS or Super Onslow Special motorcycles using Villiers, JAP and Python engines and spent a lifetime working in his motorcycle shop in Birmingham, England.
