This was a little girl watching the protest, wondering what it would be like to truly walk among us.
You can grow up as a product of your race, hating yourself and never doing any good. Or, you can grow up with an emphasis on kindness no matter what your race happens to be. Every day, I fight the former and strive for the latter.

As I said before, I wanted to show a variety of different perspectives that I don't always show at a protest when I am just trying to capture the crowd overall and the mood/energy. Here is a good lookout for photographers at one of the El staircases to see at a better height. I have rarely used this myself because it separates you from the crowd of protestors, who I am yelling and marching with typically. Up here is in the center is also my friend Vern Hester, who shoots a lot of events and concerts for Chicago's Windy City Times. I like seeing him whenever I get a chance!

I can't go too long without throwing in some politics I suppose. The morning after we landed in NYC, I was calling my senators again and asking them to do everything they could to vote against Trumpcare. In the meantime, I passed a couple of people talking on the street about Trump's collusion with Putin and the Trump Russia scandal, which ended in an emphatic fists raised in the air exclamation from all three of us that if we did not have a democratic election, we as Americans must demand a democratic election. (And I sure don't want Pence after this election was stolen!) And then, not too much farther along I was on the Manhattan Bridge and spotted this declaration.
I think what I am saying here is that I'm always a really fun person to go on a vacation with.

Today, Trump decided to fire James Comey because anyone actually trying to discover Trump's ties with Russia has to be fired. (As well as anyone who disagrees with Trump) Trump would be acting like a big spoiled dictator except he has to wear big diapers because he's such a baby and makes up such vivid stories to try to trick all the gullible people in my country.
Trump, you're fired! You never had the majority and even from the get go, I was one of the people taking over Lakeshore Drive in Chicago to protest against your phony presidency. It isn't the United States of Russia. It's the United States of America. Doesn't matter if you're conservative or liberal at this point, stand up for the fate of this country or you are a coward.
Extra credit points for the sign that states: "I Wish We Could pray Pence Away!"

On the same day that we have Flynn turning on Trump and implicating him in the Trump-Russia scandal, we had our Republican US senators decide to loot the tax structure of this country, turn it around so that only billionaires were represented and could quite literally own the poor. If these changes go through, we'll add a trillion dollars to the deficit and we'll probably have the biggest economic depression in American history. Meanwhile. Trump's own tweets admit he obstructed justice and an email from a top aide to the president, KT McFarland, was released casually mentioning how the Russians threw the election for Trump.
We have a hostile enemy who has committed treason in our White House and, before he's ousted, him and his rich cronies are going to do anything possible to ensure that the majority of the American population suffers. And what will it take for us to get Trump ousted? We have all of the evidence here. The man obstructed justice and committed treason amongst a bunch of other things...let's see, he's a sexual predator, he's violated the Emoluments Clause time and time again and his mafia connections and tax evasion would have him locked up if he was anything but a white man in America already.

I wanted to capture multiple aspects of the protest I went to Saturday afternoon..not just the sense of the crowd but a sense of the speakers, the individuals crying out with passion and the people passing by that wanted to join in and weren't sure what choice to make. This is a woman and her son...not sure what choice they did make but they were confronted with the police and the protestors. She could have decided to teach her child well, to question everything and fight for everything too...or she could have just been trying to cross the line to go into a building on our side. What do you think she decided to do? There's the essence of the human story here and it's one that has been told time and time again. We want to be indecisive sometimes but even no choice is a choice.

We're at a very strange and terrifying place in America right now. There is still a resistance but I think many people are getting tired of fighting, of constantly calling their members of congress. Increasingly, the number of Americans who disapprove of Trump and are terrified of him getting us into WWIII with North Korea grows. But, it's difficult to have the stamina to keep up that constant fear forever. It's sort of like your Sympathetic Nervous System and fight or flight. At first, we were all in fight mode. We were protesting downtown, at the airport, in extremely frigid temperatures. We were enraged and not afraid to show it. Now, we're in a sort of flight mode. We're weary and worried about our own health...we're afraid we're going to have a heart attack or a stroke. We're worried that not only chemicals can cause Cancer but negative thoughts too. We chide ourselves for getting tired, not being more active, turning off the news. We think we've perhaps signed enough petitions for a lifetime. We think maybe we'll just keep our fingers crossed and hope Robert Mueller takes care of the rest.
And, in this hope, there's also this very strange sort of optimism that flirts with the hopelessness of trying to be patient but seeing how much damage Trump does each day and how much closer he gets to getting us into a war by acting like a bully visiting the big kids' playground. Because, we see a possibility of escaping this upside down..of joining the reality we're supposed to be in-the one where Trump didn't succeed in stealing an election and robbing us of our democracy. And, we see the republican party, many of whom opposed a panel to fight the cyber-terrorism of Russia when they knew their party could benefit and many of whom also have taken their own bribes from Russia...well, we see that party of traitors fall. But, the democrats aren't good enough either. Their "progressiveness" has turned this country into a nation of for profit education hacks and has partially allowed the way for all these cracks against women and the poor to deepen. True progressiveness means socialized medicine. True progressiveness means options for women everywhere. True progressiveness means we have consistent background checks for any weapon. True progressiveness means we stop treating corporations like people and start treating all people like humans. True progressiveness means we take the reigns on the police force and stop tolerating these extreme racist abuses that put our country back. True progressiveness isn't afraid of a few toppled lousy racist statues and it isn't afraid to do what is just.
I'm not the hugest proponent of Communism because I have seen how that can be just as corrupted and fail the citizens of a country but I am a proponent of a system of government that gives back more to its citizens than it does to rich corporations and one that provides more for the working class and for immigrants than it does for a traitor's golfing trips.
And it might take more of us in the streets. And it might take more calls. And it might take a certain level of vigilance to be sustained even on our worst days. We have to feel like the future and this country is worth fighting for-all the good, the bad, and especially all the marginalized groups. Protesting isn't merely patriotic any more..it's a necessity for survival.

Strategy: detract from the fact that treason was committed because of collusion with Putin to undermine a so called "democratic" American election with destroying the Earth.
Today, Trump might punch a baby tomorrow for the attention. All of this from a so called "pro lifer" You can't make this stuff up. The nihilists are really showing their colors now more than ever.

One of the enlightening aspects about going to protests is hearing different perspectives from various speakers. This past Saturday was pretty exceptional and everyone who spoke was passionate and intelligent. Such talented well meaning people should be speaking to millions. Instead, we have a president who has trouble forming complete sentences and just threatens everyone. It's embarrassing to say the least and dangerous as well.
I wouldn't consider myself religious at this point in my life but I believe in the practice of kindness towards all people and I think that's something to aim towards and live by.

It's important to note that we have a president who treats the presidency like it's still a t.v. show and fires anyone who disagrees or might investigate him. In the meantime, he's meeting with the Russian foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, and not allowing US media inside. Trump must be an idiot...he tweets but he doesn't realize that by letting Russian journalists in, we'll all have access to those smiling photos of him and Sergey soon enough and it probably took less than an hour for them to be all over American media too.
We have a GOP that refuses to do their job to serve justice and their country and are only interested in passing health care bills that will actively harm and endanger the lives of their constituents. Not really any good old fashioned Christian Conservative values I'm familiar with...maybe they are reading a different version of the Bible.
In the meantime, let's not lose sight of all of the harm Trump keeps causing on the US and the world as if he's an out of control manic forest fire.
One key story that has been buried considering all the non stop media circus around Trump, Russia, and Comey is is relentless disregard for Science and the environment. The fact that earlier the Environmental Protection Agency dismissed half of its key scientists should be raising some alarm bells. Of course, Trump doesn't believe in facts suggesting global warming exists anyway. It must be blissful in his billionaire reality where his biggest problem is that he sucks at golf and people keep nagging him about his best friend Putin.

You can't feel it through this photograph, but you nearly can imagine it. The energy of the ocean breezes and the crashing of waves upon the well-groomed beach...the sounds and motion of the cars on the boulevard below and the conversations that billowed upward from the sidewalks beneath me...all accented by the twinkling of the city lights of South Florida. This is Miami. I've wanted to experience this throughout my entire life and now I finally have. Check one off of the bucket list.
This is the view of the Miami and South Florida skyline from our hotel balcony at the Trump International Beach Resort. Somehow we lucked into a room with a great wrap-around balcony (there were not many at this resort - perhaps 6 or 8) and this is just one of the views we had all week.
This is also how long exposure photography happens when I forget to bring my tripod: I rest my camera on the balcony ledge and turn on the 2-second countdown timer.
The tall building in the foreground is the Acqualina Resort and Spa, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach (North Miami). To the right on the horizon, just below the cloud mass, is the Miami Skyline. It's an impressive sight to behold from such a distance and is rivaled only by New York City in my eyes.
One thing that struck me as extremely odd about our stay in Sunny Isles and at the Trump International Beach Resort is that we were nearly completely surrounded by Russians. Russians lived in the condo towers next door. There were Russians staying in the hotel. Most of them appeared to be extremely wealthy. There were Russians driving exotic cars everywhere we looked. There were not one, not two, but three Russian bakery/coffee shops within walking distance of the resort. We went to Miami to immerse ourselves into Latin culture, so needless to say, being so immersed in Russian culture was a bit of a "culture shock."

UPDATE: Looking back on this in June, 2016, now that Donald Trump is running for president and with the recent news about the hacking of the DNC by Russian hackers in an apparent attempt to get information about the Trump campaign, I am reminded of how many wealthy Russians were at the Trump International Beach Resort in Sunny Isles. Why would Russian hackers bother to hack the DNC just to retrieve any information the DNC had on Trump? It all seems extremely suspicious to me and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if news came out before the election that Trump had directly engaged Russia for help to defeat Hillary Clinton and if he ended up bowing out of the race.
