The bridge was repainted fairly recently. The pub opposite is decent enough. The historic marks showing high water from various flood can just about me made out on the opposite bank.

This was one of my first shots with the Sigma 150mm f2.8 and I was using it here wide open. The light was quite low but I was still managing 1/800 second at ISO200. Such a liberation to not have to use a tripod. These cornflowers are located by the edge of a school playing field on my street in Beeston.
I have in recent times been experimenting with a much 'looser' approach to my landscape photography, by going out and shooting images without a tripod. For this image I was lying on the ground to achieve a low angle. I wanted a low point of view so that I could photograph the daffodils, but to also include the local landmark of the clock tower from the University of Nottingham's Trent Building. Setting an aperture of f1.4 meant that I could focus on the flowers and throw the building nicely out of focus, yet still retain it as an instantly recognisable background and a crucial part of the whole composition.

'Wade Whimsies': Wade Ceramics is a pottery manufacturer / designer based in Stoke on Trent, Staffs, UK. These small collectable ceramics creatures were produced from the 1950s to the 1980s. He is just under 2inches long.
As a child, I don't remember noticing quite how grumpy he looked!

When I first looked at this image I felt a little disappointed by the streaky white bits of what I thought appeared to be lens flare just to the left of the pub. However, viewing an LCD screen with eyesight as weak as mine, rarely tells the full story; so it wasn't until later when I viewed the image properly on my computer screen that I saw that the streaks were actually a couple of swirling snow flakes that were backlit by lighting from the pub.

Seems so long ago now. Taken back in July, the summer, we never really had (well apart from this evening).
An iconic type of gravity-closed double-sided gate peculiar to the River Trent in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.
They are called clappers because of the sound they make when both sides come together.
They are purposefully asymmetrical and made of a timber frame with three horizontal metal rods. Restored examples are painted bright white.
They date to the 18th century when a horse towpath was built alongside the navigable river. The path had to cross ancient field boundaries without allowing livestock to wander. These gates were the solution and continue to serve their purpose today as the sign attached to this one suggests.

66605 hurries 6M90 empties from Brentford to Tunstead over the high level line at Trent on 06/07/23.
This is a composite with the 170 passing shortly after.
I had to work hard on the different elements of this composition. The focal point is the rising mist in the distance, which was my starting point for the rest of the image. The framing of the trees and the sweep of the shoreline, in particular, formed crucial elements. The branches on the left compete a little with the background vegetation and I am slightly unsatisfied about not being able to see the vanishing point of the river. However, I think the mood of the image does go some way towards compensating for some of these shortcomings.
