Another slide to digital transfer, circa 1978. Not so great, but it's a view.
A friend and I decided to do a little trek. Since we were only going for 3-4 days, we left our backpacks at our lodgings in Kathmandu and took only our sleeping bag stuff sacks, filled with only the essentials. Sleeping bag, change of underwear and socks, a little bit of TP, toothbrush and toothpaste.
The red sack in the bottom left is mine, The large animal is the ever ubiquitous wandering water buffalo.
This is a little village we passed thru on the way to higher elevations.
You could always find food and lodgings, most often with a Nepalese family. The food was lentil soup and tea, the lodging was a straw mat on the floor sometimes shared with the family as the house could be small, one story, one room.
Sometimes the owner of a "restaurant" or whatever could speak minimal English and would ask a traveler for a name for his place to attract other vagabonds.
They'd paint it on a big plank of wood to hang outside over the door.
Even the foothills of Nepal are VERY steep and we were climbing up one that felt just shy of being perpendicular. As we approached the top, we first saw the roofs, a little higher we saw a little more. Then, there it was.
The Sign.
BEANIE'S BAR and GRILL. 😅
It cracked me up and I almost fell backwards down the hill.
I'm certain the owner had absolutely no idea what that even meant, but someone probably told him the name of their favorite place back home.
But I must admit, I did secretly entertain a tortured hope for a hamburger, fries and nice cold beer.
It served lentil soup and tea.

For us in the wealthy nations, we can pay for Nepalese porters to carry our loads, and they earn less in a year than I carried in my pocket. If the country introduces more regulations, as with all regulated activities there will be costs, both financial and ethical. The tragedy in Nepal could have easily been avoided with a simple weather warning, but it remains a fact that porters will have died due to inadequate training and equipment. They are wonderful people who work to provide education and basics for their families and deserve everything they are paid and more. We could not enjoy these wonderful places without them
The Kanchanjanga trekking trail is a diversified route whose match is found nowhere else in Nepal. You begin your trek from the Tarai lowlands of Nepal and go up to the high-lying Kanchanjanga surroundings. Mt. #Kanchanjanga is the third highest mountain on the planet. Trekking on its laps is a journey full of wilderness and adventure. This less-explored and less-crowded trail presents spectacular opportunities of trekking in a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere passing through varying climates. bit.ly/2csvLhX.

Situated just east of one of the most popular treks of Nepal, the Annapurna Base Camp trek, the Mardi Himal trek is a hidden gem. Few trekkers make their way to the Mardi Himal Base Camp spectacularly situated at the base of Mardi Himal and the impressive Machapuchhre.
The trail goes along small winding paths, through magical rhododendron forests until you climb out of the forest at an elevation around 3,300 m. The landscape changes quite abruptly into a rugged high mountain landscape, with amazing views of Mardi Himal, Machapuchre, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.
From High Camp (3580 m; some maps incorrectly mention 3900 m) you can climb up to Mardi Himal Base Camp in about 3-4 hours, which offers spectacular close up views of the entire Annapurna Range.
There are simple guesthouses and homestays along the entire route. If you plan to do this trek in the winter months please check with a local tour operator if the lodges are open.
Seasons: March,April, May, September, October, November.
Altitude : 4500 metre.
Level of Difficulty : Medium

A group of lads commence the 11 mile trek to Whernside which starts and finishes with the iconic Batty Moss/Ribblehead Viaduct. Completed in 1874, the structure spans some 440 yards and is 104' at its highest point across the valley floor. British Rail attempted to close the Settle & Carlisle line in the 1980's, but after much protest the line remained open.
For my first trekking trip ever, I coincidently went on one of the hardest treks in all of Southeast Asia...
We arrived in Lombok late at night and left early morning at 4:00am to meet with our guide and 2 porters in the Senaru village. The trek started slowly up through some banana groves, but after about 1 hour we reached the forest gate, and this is where things got crazy...
From the forest gate to position 1 is 1.3km and very steep. After reaching position 1 and taking a short 10 min break, we continued up to position extra about 1km and it started raining very hard. The trail became a small creek, and very hard to navigate. From this point on, the trail mainly consisted of large stairs made from the roots of the trees.
From position extra to position 2 was another 1.3km, and it got steeper at this stage. It took nearly 2 hours to reach position 2, and my legs started to cramp up quite badly. After reaching position 2, we had lunch with about 20 other trekkers and only 1 other girl...
We then continued another 2 hours to position 3 where the porters setup the camp for the evening. My tent was setup directly in front of Jesse's tent, and he was snoring loudly (LOL) when I woke up at 3:00am to start the final 2 hours up to the crater rim. This last stretch was the most challenging, and I had tears in my eyes, and ready to give up. My guide was very patient and very encouraging. Without his help, I would have never made it up to the top....
When we reached the rim, it was a little discouraging that we couldn't even see the lake due to the cloud cover. We decided to hang out for an hour or so, and even though the mountain never appeared, we were still able to make some nice images of the lake and the new smaller volcano that has formed...
Although it was the most challenging thing I have ever done, it was really a great experience... Even though the mountain never emerged from the clouds, this image has a lot of special meaning for me, as it's by far the hardest I have ever worked for a photo... Next year, I hope to go to the summit!

The 6 km by 8.5 km oval-shaped caldera is filled partially by the crater lake known as Segara Anak (Child of the Sea) This lake is approximately 2000 metres above sea level and estimated at being around 200 metres deep;[5] the caldera also contains hot springs.
