Had to get the train
From Potsdamer Platz
You never knew that
That I could do that
Just walking the dead
Sitting in the Dschungel
On Nürnberger Strasse
A man lost in time
Near KaDeWe
Just walking the dead
Where are we now, where are we now?
The moment you know, you know, you know
Twenty thousand people
Cross Bösebrücke
Fingers are crossed
Just in case
Walking the dead
Where are we now, where are we now?
The moment you know, you know, you know
As long as there's sun
As long as there's sun
As long as there's rain
As long as there's rain
As long as there's fire
As long as there's fire
As long as there's me
As long as there's you

For lunch, we walked through V. Sattui's vineyard to get to their deli, which has decent if overpriced food and a picnic area that seemed perfect for the warm June day.

After we got back from the Mills Creek Falls trail, dehydrated and famished, we ate at the cafe at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. Then it was back in the car to drive up Lassen Peak Highway (CA-89) through the park.
Along the way, we stopped; first at the Bumpass Hell parking lot, then at Emerald Lake, and finally at Lake Helen--named for the first woman to summit Lassen Peak and supposedly the snowiest place in California. Who knows if that is true. After all, you can't always believe what you read on the Internet.

Kinkakuji (金閣寺, Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Formally known as Rokuonji, the temple was the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and according to his will it became a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect after his death in 1408. Kinkakuji was the inspiration for the similarly named Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion), built by Yoshimitsu's grandson, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, on the other side of the city a few decades later.

Getting this photo was not easy at all!
I knew of this area of Beijing called the CBD, or Central Business District. I notice that they have all these catchy names here, much like the building I took this photo from: "China Merchants Building." At any rate, I had the driver circle the business district a few times so I could find a good angle. We found one in this building, but did not know if we could take a photo from the top floor. Woo went in first. This might have been a mistake because during the shoot he admitted he had a dreadful fear of heights. But he said it in such a charming British accent I thought it could have been my subconscious.
We went up to the 32nd floor. No windows no dice. We then went to the 31st floor, but the confused secretary would not let us through. Then we tried 30. The secretary said yes and let us into a boardroom, but the angle was not right and the other offices were busy. So we went to 29.
The secretary on 29 was confused so I instructed Woo to tell her, firmly, "We are with the Government."

Upcoming Chicago Party
On January 2nd, we have our Chicago Book Party. You can see more information there or sign up on the Facebook Event Page.
Free talk in New York on Dec 15th at B&H Photo - A Firehose of HDR
See the photo below? One of the most common questions I get is "How do you make an HDR out of a single photo?" Well, I'll go over that and more on Dec 15th at noon at the Incredible B&H Photo in New York. You can get more New York B&H event info here.
Also, you may know that B&H is a partner of Stuck in Customs -- I recommend you buy from them on my Digital SLR recommendations page.
Daily Photo - Chicago from a Chopper
Chicago is an awesome city and I always have a good time there. This time of year, it gets a bit cold... and if you don't have a good coat pre-buttoned before you go outside, well, that's a big mistake.
I have a good friend there that arranged a helicopter for me in Chicago and took the door off! I hung out for a few hours battling the backwash as we circled the city and flew in and out of the buildings. This is one of the shots from that series, and I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I did shooting it!

Hearst Castle is indeed one of the most beautiful places in the world. It's just a trafficless hour north of LA, but it seems a world apart. It worked out as a perfect stopping-point for my little road trip from Hans Zimmer to Google!
I grabbed a lot of photos of this pool. And I mean a lot. I had great trouble in choosing the "best", and there are many winners that I will be sure to include in coming weeks, months, and years!
I wonder if WF Hearst ever had one of those crazy house parties with rap video girls dancing and grinding all around the edges of the pool? I can't imagine college girls doing jello shots and big floatees that have beer-holders. This is all just a tad too classy for that,

Mammoth Hot Springs is a large complex of hot springs on a hill of travertine in Yellowstone National Park adjacent to Fort Yellowstone and the Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District. It was created over thousands of years as hot water from the spring cooled and deposited calcium carbonate (over two tons flow into Mammoth each day in a solution). Because of the huge amount of geothermal vents, travertine flourishes. Although these springs lie outside the caldera boundary, their energy has been attributed to the same magmatic system that fuels other Yellowstone geothermal areas. The hot water that feeds Mammoth comes from Norris Geyser Basin after traveling underground via a fault line that runs through limestone and roughly parallel to the Norris-to-Mammoth road. The limestone from rock formations along the fault is the source of the calcium carbonate. Shallow circulation along this corridor allows Norris' superheated water to slightly cool before surfacing at Mammoth, generally at about 170 °F (80 °C). Algae living in the warm pools have tinted the travertine shades of brown, orange, red, and green. Thermal activity here is extensive both over time and distance. The thermal flows show much variability with some variations taking place over periods ranging from decades to days. Terrace Mountain at Mammoth Hot Springs is the largest known carbonate-depositing spring in the world. The most famous feature at the springs is the Minerva Terrace, a series of travertine terraces. The terraces have been deposited by the spring over many years but, due to recent minor earthquake activity, the spring vent has shifted, rendering the terraces dry. The Mammoth Terraces extend all the way from the hillside, across the Parade Ground, and down to Boiling River. The Mammoth Hotel, as well as all of Fort Yellowstone, is built upon an old terrace formation known as Hotel Terrace. There was some concern when construction began in 1891 on the fort site that the hollow ground would not support the weight of the buildings. Several large sink holes (fenced off) can be seen out on the Parade Ground. This area has been thermally active for several thousand years. The Mammoth area exhibits much evidence of glacial activity from the Pinedale Glaciation. The summit of Terrace Mountain is covered with glacial till, thereby dating the travertine formation there to earlier than the end of the Pinedale Glaciation. Several thermal kames, including Capitol Hill and Dude Hill, are major features of the Mammoth Village area. Ice-marginal stream beds are in evidence in the small, narrow valleys where Floating Island Lake and Phantom Lake are found. In Gardner Canyon one can see the old, sorted gravel bed of the Gardner River covered by unsorted glacial till. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammoth_Hot_Springs]
Yellowstone National Park is a national park located in the U.S. states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. It was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone was the first National Park in the U.S. and is also widely held to be the first national park in the world. The park is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of its most popular features. It has many types of ecosystems, but the subalpine forest is the most abundant. It is part of the South Central Rockies forests ecoregion. [Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_National_Park]
I ended up in Sydney on the final nights of Vivid Sydney, which is a short time where the city does many different light displays all over the city. On a few buildings, like this one, they use special projectors that work on 3D surfaces. Next time, I want to go back and spend longer running around to take photos! :)
