The one of liveried 42207 created much interest amongst NSW rail enthusiasts when it made its first appearance. NSW's first blue diesel-electric, it remained in this livery until the sale of the 422 class to private operators. Such a shame, as they are/were one of the most flexible locos NSW ever had- great on bothmain and branchlines. Their "get-up-and-go" was just brilliant.

US Air Force 'MAC' (Military Airlift Command) Lockheed C-5A Galaxy 70-0454 in the static park at the SBAC show, Farnborough, September 1974.
For some 40 years the Galaxy has served the USAF, carrying huge outside loads across continents, from Tanks to helicopters, the Galaxy can swallow them whole via her hinged nose and rear loading doors. With an upper deck she can carry troops too and has some 28 wheels including 4 nose wheels which can all kneel to assist in loading.
Powered by four engines, some 80 odd Galaxy's entered service with the A model later augmented by the B model batch. However with such huge loads began to take their toll on the relatively underpowered airframe and a new design involved a revised model, a rework of the B, known as the C-5M which is now coming into service.
Most of the A models are now beginning to be recycled through AMARC to keep the remaining B models and the new M's flying, the latter with new engines and glass cockpit technology extending the life of this monster aeroplane for another decade.
One of the most unusual loads ever dropped from a C-5 was a missile! Loaded aboard in a special container, the 'live load' was deployed from inside via the rear doors and dropped, suspended by parachutes until the system was fired remotely ...........see the footage here:

A perspective of the National Aquatics Center (Water Cube) in mid afternoon at the Beijing Olympics Park.
The Olympic Park (北京奧林匹克公园/Beijing Aolinpike Gongyuan) in Beijing, China, hosted the summer games in 2008. The park is located in the Chaoyang district of Beijing, a bit north of downtown. The easiest access (by subway) is simply to go to the Olympic National Stadium station or Olympic Park station on subway line 8.
On the grounds of the park are most of the recognizable sites from the game. Most notable are the National Sports Stadium (Birds’ Nest) and National Aquatic Center (Water Cube). Also on the grounds are the National Indoor Stadium, the Olympic Green Hockey Field, Olympic Green Tennis Center, and Olympic Green Archery Field.
For non-sporting venues, there’s a long Promenade running north-south through the middle of the complexes. Ling Long Pagoda is just north of the Birds’ Nest. Also on the grounds, post-Olympics, are quite a few interesting sculptures (reminiscent of the Olympic Park in Seoul, although their sculpture park is more centralized within the park).
One thing that you don’t see much of at the Olympic Green is…green. It’s mostly paved and concrete. (Perhaps I didn’t explore enough, which I’ll remedy quite soon.) Regardless of the time of year or time of day, there are always quite a few people at the Olympic Park. True to Chinese nature, you are beset upon by vendors hawking all kinds of trinkets upon leaving the subway. Kites, souvenirs, having your picture taken, you name it…
Thanks to the art located throughout the park, it’s a pleasant place to visit during the daytime. During the night, it’s even more attractive as they still light the Birds’ Nest and the Water Cube. (Of the two, the Water Cube is less appealing during the day and more appealing at night.)
Of the venues, I don’t know which ones are open and closed to the public. Most of the seating in each has been reduced after the Olympics. I do know for a fact, though, that you can tour the Birds’ Nest (limited access, of course) for about 80 RMB. I think that may include access to the roof. I haven’t taken that tour yet, but may at some point.
Although there isn’t much to do at the park here, it’s definitely an interesting side trip in Beijing and could possibly be coupled with something like the Bell Tower & Drum Tower (a few stations down line 8) or the Yonghegong Lama Temple (about 5-6 subway stops away, but 2 subway transfers).

And now for a bit of serendipity of the kind only a hunter of vintage books can love….last spring I was called to the east coast by an emergency surgery in the family. While in the North Carolina triangle area, my sister and I systematically hit all the vintage bookstores I could find listed online. One store in particular was a rich lode to be mined, and among the few treasures I allowed myself was this workbook, which is about 12”x19” and has been folded for so many years that many of the pages are worn through at the fold. It was slipped onto the top of a bookcase with other “odd fellows” and I found it utterly charming, with line drawings of several folk and fairy tales, poster suggestions and holiday ideas. Some pages are missing, and the only identification I could find was “The Foundation Library” on the cover, and mention of specific reference pages to look up in “The Home Educator” and “The Child’s Treasury.” I spent a couple of hours on my sister’s computer trying to locate any info on these books with absolutely no luck. And then it hit me…..I had ordered two books (c 1923-24) just before I left home that I had never seen before. One of them I was sure was “The Home Educator.” My sister could not understand my euphoria at making this long distance and weird connection ;-D I couldn’t have found it if I had tried - I have seen no reference to the workbook in the volumes at all.
I have since obtained another copy of “The Home Educator” which was printed in 1931. It has been interesting to see the differences in the two printings.
“The Foundation Library Juvenile Artist workbook,” by combined efforts of May Hill, Minnetta Sammis Leonard and Patty Smith Hill, who I am under the impression had a considerable influence on the Montessori teaching method as well as kindergarten in general.
