At the temple Shibamata Taishakuten.

Shibamata Taishakuten was founded in 1629 - but the buildings in the area are generally from the early 20th century. The inner shrine of the Taishakudo (Taishaku temple hall) was finished in 1915, and the hall of worship 1929. The temple is centred around the worship of Taishakuten (sometimes called just Taishaku - written 帝釈天 or 帝釈 respectively), the Japanese name for Sakra devanam Indra (that is, the god Indra, known from Hinduism). Shibamata is the area in which the temple is located.

The temple (and its nearby ferry) is designated as one of the '100 Soundscapes of Japan' (日本の音風景100選) and the temple is also '100 Landscapes of Japan (Heisei era)' (平成百景). And it is the home of a series of quite spectacular wood carvings, depicting scenes from the Lotus Sutra.

I say traditional because my camellia flowers are the only plant I have on my tiny patio that isn't a succulent. Several years ago many of us here in San Diego stopped trying to grow plants that thrive where there are seasons and switched to low maintenance plants that are native to the desert.

The Chouwara Tannery is the largest and busiest of the four traditional tanneries still operating in the medina.

Sheep, goat, and cow skins are cured, stretched, scraped, and dyed in numerous honeycombed earthen pits .The skins are cured by a concoction that includes cow urine and pigeon guano and are then laid atop the rooftops to dry.

The final dying process involves the leather being mixed and soaked by hand in the vats before being trimmed for the medina's leatherworkers.

The vegetable dyes -- poppy (red), turmeric (yellow), mint (green), indigo (blue) -- have been replaced by chemicals that, along with the odd rinsing machine, are the only modern concessions to have infiltrated the process.

The Chouwara tanneries are best viewed in the morning, from the roof-terrace leatherware shops along Derb Chouwara, where a well-placed sprig of mint will help those who find the smell perhaps more confronting than the sight.

Another one from the archives - a traditional wooden church in Bucharest (it's a genuine old church but relocated - it was in an outdoor museum with various examples of traditional architecture. See Ela's comment below).
