Happened upon this Mallard hen that was equipped with a solar-powered tracking device. Fox River at De Pere, Wisconsin USA.

I had no idea this was a thing.
I am hoping to find out more about the recent whereabouts of this lady duck who is carrying such a burden with great aplomb for the betterment of her kind.
There was a large group of these ducks on the water, but this one had a strange rod attached to it. One can see some water drops on it from when the duck dove underwater and it showed up in a couple of photos. I wonder if this is some kind of fishing rod it got hooked up on. Or is is some kind of strange measuring/tracking device? It was the only duck that I could observe that had such a rod attached to its body.

Macro photography was hampered by a fresh, almost constant N/NW breeze on the day this image was made. Thus, a record shot only and one that I hope to improve on in the near future.
I wanted to record the long feathered antennae that only the male Emperor Moth has. Using these alone, a male can detect the scent, (pheromones), that is given off by an unmated female. It has been documented that males can detect pheromones from a distance of 7miles away which if true, is utterly remarkable! Several males will swarm around an unmated female until one secures a successful mating. The rest then disperse and continue their search.
This is a rare shot to see a sandhill crane and whooping crane together. This shot ocurred where I live in Brandon, Florida, shortly after the whooping crane followed an ultralight plane, FROM WISCONSIN to reintroduce the species in Florida, thus the tracking device you see mounted on its leg. This bird is endangered in the USA and Canada.
I was allocated about 20 seconds to take my photo before the far more interesting option arose for him of tracking nearby flying birds. Here, he has just caught sight of them approaching. I knew my luck would not hold much longer!

We were so fortunate to see this endangered White Rhino and calf. I didn't notice the tracking device on her leg until I looked at my pictures but glad that helps to protect her from poachers. They are pretty safe in this reserve because there is an electric fence surrounding the property. This also protects the cheetahs, which this area is known for. Taken in Phinda Nature Reserve, South Africa.

By looking at this photo in enlarged mode, you can read him making his case far better than I can explain it. It has to do with tracking devices alleged to have been surgically implanted by the US federal government.

WARNING! I will try not to post too many photos of this amazing little family of three Whooping Cranes - but I already know I will FAIL miserably : ) What a huge privilege to be able to watch them preening, feeding and interacting!
This is a close-up of the leg band and tracking device on the legs of the male Whooping Crane in the little family of three, that we spent quite a lot of time observing. What a wonderful family, with the youngster (colt) learning how to preen and how to catch food, especially from watching Dad. Our presence seemed to have zero affect on these Cranes, as they went about their daily routines. So neat to know that all these Whooping Cranes will fly north to Alberta, my own province, where they will spend the summer. Wise birds, avoiding our many months of brutal winter weather up north!

The so-called βWood Buffalo-Aransasβ population is the only remaining group of Whooping Cranes that has continued to nest, migrate, and overwinter in the traditional areas where they were first documented by Western ornithologists. The entire Whooping Crane species consists of only 437 wild individuals among four populations, three of which were artificially reared and reintroduced to the wild, plus 162 individuals in captivity (as of 2011). However, the only surviving remnant of the naturally-occurring Whooping Crane population is the Wood Buffalo-Aransas flock, consisting of only 283 individuals (as of the winter of 2011-12). This is the only group of Whooping Cranes that has managed to continually pass on the traditional ways of life of this species, in an unbroken chain of chick-rearing and parenting by birds that can live more than 30 years in the wild.
The vital nesting grounds lie in the vast Wood Buffalo National Park, the largest national park in Canada. The park is an immense area, a sprawling 17,300 square miles (44,807 kmΒ²), spanning northeastern Alberta into the southern Northwest Territories. Amazingly, Wood Buffalo National Park is larger than nine US states.
The equally vital wintering grounds lie in southern Texas, along the Gulf of Mexico. In winter, Whooping Cranes are seafood aficionados, preying on blue crabs and clams in the brackish Gulf Coast marshes. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, near Rockport, TX, is one of the few areas of protected public property where people can reliably visit and expect to see these rare and special birds. This is also the exact area where Hurricane Harvey came ashore as a powerful Category 4 storm on 26 August 2017, with sustained winds of 130 mph (209 km/h). Hurricane Harvey went on to set records for both the astounding amounts of rainfall in the Houston metropolitan area, as well as the cost of the damage inflicted to human structures. The storm is currently tied with 2005βs Hurricane Katrina as the costliest tropical cyclone to hit the United States. Luckily, the Whooping Crane population was still up in Canada when the storm hit." From link below.

I hate losing things. It's such a waste of time to have to search for your keys just because someone moved them from their usual location. Since I started putting Tile bluetooth trackers on everything, I don't lose things as much, which I like. But their reTile program is a joke. I thought the discount was one Tile to one Tile, but it seems to be applicable to one order per year. When you consider that, they're rather pricey. Still, time is money, so I fork over the money every year just for the peace of mind.

Review:
The discovery of a new land takes a Special Forces team to meet up with an exploration group of researchers in what should be a simple wilderness mission.
All goes wrong as soon the teams arrive at the newfound island and after the initial surprise, Skull Island starts the βmonster showβ demonstrating why man should have stayed away.
An excellent action/exploration movie that will delight the curious dreamy explorers out there. The characters are regular, somewhat amusing, soldiers and more serious βspecialistsβ now facing the horde of beasts that rule the island.
The CGI is good, many times relying on fast paced scenes with proper filters to distract from any imperfection.
The acting is reasonably medium-to-good, failing to make us feel what the stranded crew members are going through, since after middle movie we are already more concerned with Kong and its own fight against the island treats and these new visitors.
Comber is ready for release, fully equipped with a radio transmitter to track his whereabouts in the Pacific Ocean. Good luck buddy!

βUniqueβ bird migration discovered
A tracking device which weighs less than a paperclip has helped scientists uncover what they say is one of the worldβs great bird migrations. It was attached to a red-necked phalarope from Scotland that migrated thousands of miles west across the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. The journey has never before been recorded for a European breeding bird.

Red-necked Phalarope use many coastal areas, like the recent Coastal Grant recipient in Harpswell Maine (www.fws.gov/gomcp/) as stopover habitat during their migration. To stop the GPS signal, you have to take the battery completely out of your cell phone. This is near impossible on an iPhone.
