“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.”

I was just looking through the calendar site for 'international days of' to see if there were any dates coming up that I could use to upload a Asha picture and hey presto today 25th May is 'Towel Day'. I knew I had some early pictures of Asha on the beach with her beach towel robe so I thought I could use one or two of these. So here is my Asha picture to celebrate Towel Day...You may not be aware that today is Towel Day. All around the world people remember and celebrate the creative genius of British author Douglas Adams by carrying a towel around with them. Douglas Adams did not only contribute to the literary genre of science fiction but to the English language too. Here is a short list of terms that gained an extra dimension through The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series.

42

Perhaps the most well-know example of how a simple number can take on quite a depth of meaning. Try typing the answer to life, the universe and everything into Google, without quotes or capitalising the small words, and Google Calculator will find the answer to the meaning of life.

How do fans celebrate Towel Day? Fans of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy will celebrate today by carrying around a towel with them. They will share photos of themselves with their towels on social media with the hashtag #TowelDay.

if you live in Club Marazul - you need to ask for it in Spanish: "Sin cabeza y sin pie" Translation: no head; no feet. Oh , and Gracias.

Club Marazul was a Club Hotel for French Tourists on the Island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. There was a tiny grocery in the building that was serviced by Canarians who spoke Spanish and French. Sadly, I only spoke English. I lived here for about a year and one of my neighbors finally helped me to purchase one of the gorgeous looking chickens they had at the butcher - but I had no cleaver, so I never thought I could purchase one. It was one of those moments that I learned "ask and ye shall receive".

The club towel has been with me since 1984.

FGR - Towel Day

Well today has been a beautiful day out, but I definitely could do without all of the cicadas flying around..blech..I think they are gross. They are rampant this year, here in this part of NC and it is all you hear around here is the constant humming of them during the day. It isn't like the pretty sound that crickets make..it is a sound that gets irritating after awhile, lol. :D Anyway, here is my addition to today's FGR challenge of Towel Day. I have never seen or read Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so I am not too sure if this keeps with the theme..but I hope it does. it is my favorite beach towel, because it has Betty Boop on it. My husband bought it for me at Universal Studios in Florida, when we all went on vacation there a few years ago now. We had just gotten off of this ride that we rode more than once that was like a white water rapids type of ride..it was awesome. :D

It's small but special.

Guess I'm channeling cozy blanket feelings too with the thumb. Oh well.

The Rogue Players are using Towel Day as their theme. In honor of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Mini towel is item collected from Comic Con when the movie can out.

Monday May 25th is also Geek Pride day.

*Things you may not know about me and today's random fact:

I'm a closet geek. Well not that secret really. Ok. I love Star Wars. My brother swears that my sis and I ruined some of his original toys. Also it's possible the 1st movie I ever saw in a theater was SW as an infant. He says I cried through it. I like to say Darth Vader scared me. :P

Somewhere in storage are childhood Halloween photos of us dressed as Darth and Lea. (from SW not Return of the Jedi -Lea)

Even watched Return of the Jedi on tv the other night.

Oh yeah.

A towel, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

Happy World Photo Day too.

The prompt asked for a towel. This is 25th May which, to those in the know, is "Towel Day". It commemorates the work of Douglas Adams who wrote The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

If the foregoing means nothing to you, search out the book and read it. In it you will find that Arthur Dent is told to carry a towel with him at all times, hence "Towel Day"

The book was published 42 years ago this year. Also, to those in the know, that is a magical fact and a magical number.

consigo a toalha.

Today is Towel Day.

Towel Day is an annual celebration on the 25th of May, as a tribute to the late author Douglas Adams (1952-2001). On that day, fans around the universe proudly carry a towel in his honour. The commemoration was first held in 2001, two weeks after Adams' death on May 11, 2001.

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.

I love The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It is one of my most favourite books. Douglas Adams was a genuis, I hope he didn't forget to take the towel with him to the eternity ;)

BTW our wedding date is 10.10.10, because this binary translates to decimal as a number 42. How nerdy are we? ;)

#DontPanic

Towel Day is May 25

And guess what I heard? It was Benny, and he was shouting, "Spaceship! Spaceship! Spaceship!" And he was carrying his towel into the galaxy, ready to take on whatever problem he would face. May 25 is Towel Day, and you are encouraged to use your towel, too! Read more:

Towel Day celebrates author Douglas Adams and his best-known work, the science-fiction series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The day was first held on May 25, 2001, two weeks after Adams passed away on May 11, at the age of 49 from a heart attack. On the day, fans are to carry a towel to show their appreciation for the author and his books.

On May 14, 2001, Clyde D. Williamson made a post on the open source forum "System Toolbox," proposing that May 25 should be Towel Day. He said:

"Make sure that the towel is conspicous[sic]- use it as a talking point to encourage those who have never read the Hitchhiker's Guide to go pick up a copy. Wrap it around your head, use it as a weapon, soak it in nutrients—whatever you want!"

A few days after the post, Chris Campbell registered towelday.org to spread word about the day. The day then became an annual event.

But what do towels have to do with anything? Chapter 3 of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy talks about the significance of towels:

A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have, partly because it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so readily on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini-raft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you — daft as a brush, but very, very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag ( a ‘strag’ is non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost." What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Douglas Adams was born March 11, 1952, in Cambridge, England. After graduating from Cambridge in 1974, he wrote for Doctor Who and wrote scripts for the BBC. He wrote the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series, which was a 12-part series that ran from 1978 through 1980 on BBC radio. It was followed by the novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in 1979, and then four other novels: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe; Life, the Universe and Everything; So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish; and Mostly Harmless. The series parodies and lampoons modern society. It follows Englishman Arthur Dent in a world of absurdity and randomness and is filled with humor and cynicism. In total, the books have sold over 14 million copies. The series has been adapted to television, theater, film, comics, and even to a computer game. Douglas Adams also wrote a number of other books such as Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency; The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul; The Meaning of Liff; The Utterly Utterly Merry Comic Relief Christmas Book and Last Chance to See… Today we celebrate him and all of his work, but especially The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and do so by carrying a towel.

How to Observe

The day is best celebrated by carrying a towel in the most conspicuous way possible so that people ask you why you have it. Then you are to tell them about The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and encourage them to pick up a copy of the book. If you haven't read the book yourself, today is an excellent day to get your own copy. You could also pick up the rest of the books in the series. Other media related to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that you could enjoy include the radio series, the TV series, or the film.

Events taking place around the world on the day are listed on the holiday's website. You could check there for an event to attend or organize your own event. Create a Facebook page or webpage for your event, and send an email to have your event listed on the holiday's website. Some ideas for activities at your event could include a toast to Douglas Adams or the watching of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Visit the day's Facebook page to post pictures from events you attend or pictures of yourself carrying a towel. Other ways you could celebrate the day include joining ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha, which is an appreciation society for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
