George Aitchison was an expert stonemason transported as a convicted criminal to Van Diemen's Land in 1818 with 160 convicts on the ship "Hibernia". Having served his time, he won his ticket of leave and decided to build a coach house to serve the growing number of people travelling between Hobart and Launceston.
Aitchison built this magnificent building in 1833. The inn was one of eight built in the town and remained a hostelry until 1882. In the early 20th century it was bought by a local family and was used as a private home until 1975 and then subsequently resold in 2003 and 2017. The latest incarnation of this building is truly a sight for sore eyes. As Basil Fawlty would have said, "Ah, a touch of class." Who would have thought that the finest house in Oatlands was the result of the labours of a convict. But that my friends is the story of Tasmania's development.

** I did check Australian photographer Max Dupain's great book on "Georgian Architecture in Australia" (1963), but this coach house did not feature. That may have been because at the time it was showing real wear and tear. Subsequent owners have put a lot money into this magnificent restoration. Even the silver car out front seems to add to the impression.

Center nicely formed and well packed cream-yellow petaloids, matures to cream salmon, light salmon/pink guard petals. Four buds per stem good substance, fragrant, 36″ in height, blooms mid season. Seedling # KR39-38
Plentiful creamy yellow petaloids form a rounded center that sits atop a double row of salmon-pink guard petals. A feathery tuft in shades of light salmon and cream adds a flourish to the stylish, beautifully formed blossoms.
Solaris: Touch of Class. Krekler/Klehm. 1999. Lactiflora cultivar. Light pink guard petals surround a mass of tightly packed cream white petaloids. Fragrant. Flowers are large and elegant. The sturdy stems need no support. Highly sought after and one of our favorite lactiflora cultivars. Seed fertility. Week 6 bloom time.
