Christmas was rather weird this year. We were back from Brazil on the Friday before the big day and on my return I was expecting a letter from the hospital detailing an operation I was supposed to have before the New Year, only the letter never arrived. So now I'm in limbo, lost in an administrative system - but on the other hand, I did manage to enjoy a rather nice festive season instead so no one is crying.
Lightweight, great looking and the Tiramic "whatever that is" bearings are really smooth.

Tokens like this were issued to each miner at a colliery - this one is from Wollaton Colliery, Nottingham. It is 4cm in diameter and made of brass. They had the miner's personal number stamped in the middle and had to be produced when claiming their pay. They were also used to show who was underground and it was the responsibility of the pit head worker to check they were all collected when the cage came to the surface at the end of the shift. Some pits had different tokens for pay and for showing who was underground.

The Cherokee Memorial Park in Hopkinsville is where Chief Whitepath and Fly Smith, a clan leader, are buried. This site was one of the ration stops along the Trail of Tears.
I had some extra time before Rob got out of work one Saturday so I went to the Transit Museum nearby to kill some time. Turned out to be a fun little trip. Highly recommended for families with kids who love trains.
I think I still have some tokens somewhere for these slots.

Swapping "tokens" on the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway at Winchcombe Station.
The token (or staff) is a vital safety device handed by the signalman to the driver or fireman of a train entering a single-track line. The token carries a lock and the signalling equipment at the opposite end of the single track line cannot be operated without it. This ensures another train cannot enter the single track section in the opposite direction. The driver hands the staff or token to the signalman when he reaches the end of the single track section and collects the staff for the next section.
