Elephants, the largest land animals alive today, two species are recognised - the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), although some evidence suggests that African bush elephants and African forest elephants are separate species (L. africana and L. cyclotis respectively).

BNSF's Pasadena Roadswitcher tip-toes very gingerly along the seldom used Metropolitan Water District spur in La Verne, CA on April 23, 2012. This spur runs north off the former Second District near La Verne University up to a water filtration plant, that has been around for years. Here the job with three GP60M's all in Santa Fe paint, is creeping down the short but steep grade at the entrance to the grounds.

The lights of Grangemouth Oil Refinery by night are an almost surreal sight, as mesmerising as a spectacular firework display. Here I wanted to experiment with panoramas, overlaying an out of focus sweep onto a sharp image of the refinery, to be suggestive of a dream state.
Bokeh thanks to Helios 44M (and Sarah who tipped me off to this wonderful piece of glass, and got us out here to marvel at the lights =) Consists of two layers each with four images stitched into a panorama.
This is a first for me. I have seen one last year, flitting through the garden, but it didn't alight on our plants.
My wife found this on our miniature Apple tree. It parked itself in the shade, so I made moves to lift it into the sunlight, as it was only about 6 deg. C.
This friendly little thing was happy to climb onto my finger and be photographed :-))
