Tip:
Question "when using gels, what white balance do I select"
The answer is quite simple.
You shoot the colorchecker passport with normal strobes (so without the gels) now you use this as the setting and add the gels. This way the gels do exactly what they supposed to do.
Of course..... When shooting gels you are in the creative mood and you can change whatever you like.
Added note.
When using CTO gels for color correction you of course shoot with gels on. But this tip is about the creative use.

Shooting Tips:
This is called a concept shot… This is very different from what you have seen me shoot… This was shot for a major client at the job…
When you shoot for the Design, Advertising or Fashion industries, they’re several disciplines you must be proficient in… Photoshop and Illustrator are the main two…
In my industry, they’re no such thing as a untouched shot… as a matter of fact, 99.9% of all images are Photoshopped for print for one reason or another… it could be to tweak the color or to remove a pin hole or to remove a blemish or for multiply reasons…
Shooting Technique:
I purchase a piece clear glass 48”x 48”… This lovely young lady works for my company and volunteer for this shoot… The clear glass was to achieve the fingerprint on the glass… To achieve the soft DOF… I shot this with the Aperture: f/2.8, while focusing on the fingertip… I used 3 lamps for my light source… I use the curve to saturate my color and the grid was done on layers in photoshop…
This combination of shooting and using Design graphics is common in my industry... But not at all common on Flickr...
I hope you enjoy looking at the different style of this shot.

Maybe Fixed head powered, ex NCB? but in very tidy order -back then of course, this yard did not keep stock for long before stuff was cut up!
A Bromstone butterfly and a Small White butterfly where whirling round together in flight for quie a long time like a courtship dance before a short spell visiting flowers and resting on the ground. They then started the dance again and were joined by an Orange-tip Butterfly.
A new Isuzu bulk tipping lorry operated by Daltons of Matamata, suppliers of potting mixes and other landscaping products. More often than not such a truck would operate with a 4-axle drawbar trailer.
I am not a fan of the recent updating/restyling of the Isuzu cab front, particularly the upper grille area with its six black areas as well as the gap below it which gives the appearance of there being something missing.

Using cardboard or flags for hard shadows is an awesome trick.
Make sure you place the object as close as possible to the model otherwise the shadow will not be hard enough.

Just the tip of the macro iceberg! I'm going to enjoy using the D300 and the Nikon 105mm macro lens combination!
It's going to take forever to learn the new camera layout though! The buttons are in all the wrong places! What is second nature with the Canon, is completely alien with the Nikon! Mad! All part of the fun of learning something new I suppose! :)
Right, I'm off to visit some photostreams while my battery re-charges!!
Large on black! :)
