♫ Mood

Blossom

by Dorianne Laux

What is a wound but a flower

dying on its descent to the earth,

bag of scent filled with war, forest,

torches, some trouble that befell

now over and done. A wound is a fire

sinking into itself. The tinder

serves only so long, the log holds on

and still it gives up, collapses

into its bed of ashes and sand. I burned

my hand cooking over a low flame,

that flame now alive under my skin,

the smell not unpleasant, the wound

beautiful as a full-blown peony.

Say goodbye to disaster. Shake hands

with the unknown, what becomes

of us once we’ve been torn apart

and returned to our future, naked

and small, sewn back together

scar by scar.

... because that's a important way to share with others looking at the world through my eyes ;-)

Fungi are manifest in a multiplicity of folktales and fairy tales, and in folk remedies and rituals. They appear as foods, poisons, diseases, decorations, dyes or tinder, and even in insults, compliments, graffiti and video games. These and other impacts of fungi on folkways are here concisely reviewed under categories likely to interest professional and amateur mycologists and accessible to the lay reader. The evolution of popular perceptions of fungi is sketched from Shakespearean times through contemporary European and American cultures. Provided are specific instances of how different cultures utilized or avoided fungi, responded to fungal diseases of crops or humans, or viewed fungi in the context of popular belief, superstition or religion.

Thanks for all the fine comments on my photos,

it is very much appreciated

Tinder fungus [Fomes formentarius]

Made in the woods of Paleis 't Loo in Apeldoorn. I made one of two photos (stacking) because I also wanted the drop to be sharp. Press the 'L' key for the magnification.

Beautiful spot. and beautiful sunset.

Checking Tinder One Last Time

Explore, Apr 3, 2022 #334

In near tinder dry weather conditions now typical of May in the West Highlands, the Riley duo of No. 44871 & 45407 climb out of the Horseshoe Curve over Gleann Viaduct with 'The Cathedral's Explorer'.

The tinder fungus fluttering her skirt in the slowfox of a life time. ( What is her Latin name, anyone?)

Rework of a not too old picture of mine. This has more color and less tree.

A top view of this fungus found on a birch tree:

www.flickr.com/photos/lesc/53256375822/in/photostream/

A bit of research suggests it's a 'Birch Polypore'. They are tough, leathery and bitter - So not a late night snack on toast.

Good when dried, the top is good for sharpening razors and knives for which it is also called the 'Razorstrop fungus'.

Good too as tinder for lighting camp fires. If you've cut yourself out in the wilderness, find one and cut it in a strip to make a a plaster!

Amadouvier - Il n'est pas comestible

Sert depuis des temps immémoriaux pour conserver le feu. Il est très dur et ne se consume pas.

Fomes fomentarius (commonly known as the tinder fungus)

Though inedible, F. fomentarius has traditionally seen use as the main ingredient of amadou, a material used primarily as tinder, but also used to make clothing and other items. The 5,000-year-old Ötzi the Iceman carried four pieces of F. fomentarius, concluded to be for use as tinder

The common name of this species of fungus that typically appears as a round piece of black coal-lik ball attached to a dying or dead tree trunks and branches is King Alfred’s cakes. This name originates from legend that King Alfred (who ruled in 9th century) was mistaken for a soldier by a peasant woman in the house were he was seeking a refuge after the battle. She asked him to look after cakes baking on the fire but he fell asleep…, well, another name for these fungi are coal fungi. Whether this story is true or not difficult to say because it was first told 100 years after the King lived, but the name sticks to the fungus forever.

The scientific name of this common and widespread saprotrophic fungus is Daldinia concentrica. The genus Daldinia is named in honour of Agostino Daldini, a Swiss clergyman and botanist. The specific epithet ‘concentrica’ is self-explanatory if you look at the image above showing concentric rings of the fungal body. This is where black spores are matured and then driven up to the surface and expelled outside through tiny openings. The concentric rings are thought to reflect seasonal growth like tree rings - so it is likely to be about 12 years old. Majority of trees were planted here in 2000. This fungus, when dry, can be used as tinder to light fires, hence another name the tinder bracket.

This specimen was neatly sliced in half by a chainsaw I think when this ash tree trunk was fell down and cleared of branches; a cut through the branch seen on the left. Massive clearance is taken place in this Community Woodland as part of removal ash trees infected with dieback fungus, as well as general maintenance. Primrose Hill Community woodland. Tinder fungus, Fomes fomentarius

... I swiped right, you left town ... all before dessert at Sweet Re-leaf @ LeLoo's World - maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Friends/49/151/41

The tinder dry ground of the West Highlands is on full show, with the lack of growth particularly noticeable around Loch Eilt.

Black 5 No. 44871 is kindly worked downgrade by Driver Matt Earnshaw with 'The Jacobite'.

Note - Taken on a pole for some height, and diesel tailgunner removed.

If I'm not mistaken this is a tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius), which was used in making parts of clothing, styptic and tinder, of course. 5,000 year-old Ötzi the Iceman carried four pieces of tinder fungus, and its widespread use for medical purposes and making fire seems to have lasted until approx. 1900.

on the Mitchell grass downs off the Aramac road, Queensland, Australia. There were some spectacular storms, but no solid rain. The country around this spot is tinder dry.

I like the contrast of the water and reed colors.

Once the tinder fungus gets into the wood, that will not take a lot time...

Tindaro screpolato is the only modern sculpture in the Boboli Gardens. The work of renouned artist Igor Mitoraj is instantly recognizable . This is an enormous bronze which has been in place since 1997.

During this time of no travel, we have many seminars available on platforms like YouTube and Zoom. Recently I was reminded of this artist's work and thought that I should post a pic from my archives from the time we could travel.
